Pneuma was born during the lockdown. The frustration, claustrophic state, uncertainty and feeling of being “alone together” came out through music. I allowed the music to take the first step and I took the next. It almost felt like the tracks were writing themselves and I was just there to record. But obviously it comes from a place inside my soul.

Pneuma 1 came to life first. Those broken beats flew right out of me and the dark atmosphere followed on top.
On the journey Pneuma 2 and 3 started breathing as well and eventually I created and finished all three versions at the same time.
These are some dark, aggressive pieces but if you listen carefully you hear hope and optimism between the beats.

Dublin DJ and producer Jack Fleming aka Son Orbis has stepped up to the controls as our 118th guest on our ever growing Local Selection mix series.

We're blown away by the constant flow of mixes and tunes coming from this island. We always strive to represent both up-and-coming and established artists at Four Four and we're delighted to have reached over 100 mixes in a few short years. Today it's a massive welcome to Son Orbis. 

Over the last few years Son Orbis has played regularly at clubs such as Wigwam, Button Factory and Hangar. The young producer has been working hard on the production side of things the last two years with releases coming out on Eton Messy Records and Milkit Sounds. With both releases gaining support from the likes of Joris Voorn, A Trak and 1-800 Girls to name but a few.

'This mix is blended with 90’s Trance, Bass, Breakbeat and Techno. All styles I’m really inspired by right now'.

Second State’s latest release is a special one — the debut LP from talented German producer @wigbert. Stepping up for his first full-length, he demonstrates why he’s a firm favorite among so many. The Distorted Matter LP showcases his affinity for both atmospheric mood pieces and pummeling club cuts, the sign of a producer with more than one trick up his sleeve. 

“Uncertainty” opens the album in an ominous tone. As its name suggests, it creates a feeling of unease, even horror, as macabre drones blare underneath bleepy arpeggios. Later on the LP, on “Error 404”, this mood is revisited, with bleeps and static signifying that something has gone awry. The second track on the record, “Reflection” is its hardest hitting. Ice-cold stabs, a pumping kick and driving rhythms send the track into overdrive before creepy arps and drums come back in. It’s complex, layered and unrelenting. 

Night Vision” is threaded with warped off-kilter rhythms, while “Xcelerator” is charged with nervous energy, echo FX and prickling percussion. Other tracks on the LP share this latter mood, such as “Digital Mirroring”, with its windblown synths, distorted vox and broken beats, while the title track heralds a different variety of sounds. The beats on it are also chunky, but the airy pads place it in a more ethereal category. “Drone Level” is similarly lighter in spirit, with arps shimmering over the sound of running water.

The rest of the LP continues in this is more pensive vein, with the rhythms of “Focus” loping under twinkling, reverbed synths, before “Transformed” closes the album in a delicate melange of dreamy pads, chopped up beats, and sounds that mimic insects and nature.

We take a trip to Belfast once again, this time stopping in with the host of BBC Radio Ulster show 'Beat Seekers' and local DJ and producer, Reger.

Being somewhat new to the Irish DJ circuit, Robbie McCammon aka Reger started playing out in Belfast in 2019, and has since appeared at venues such as Ulster Sports Club, Thompson’s Garage and Palm House for events such as Misfit and Stereo Sessions.

In 2020, Robbie began work at BBC Radio Ulster's Across The Line [Now Beat Seekers] showcasing exclusive Irish talent. Robbie's passion for radio and showcasing new Irish talent, alongside influences from the likes of Special Request, Blawan, Overmono, Objekt, Andrew Weatherall, Gilles Peterson, Timmy Stewart and Carlton Doom all contributes to such a wide variety of sounds you hear within Reger productions and mixes.

Local Selection 119: Reger

Today we premiere yet another brilliant track, today coming from young Dublin based DJ and produce, Mathew Day aka Taking Names.

Like most weeks we got sent a ton of new music and Mathew Day aka Taking Names was a name we were not familiar with, but certainly are now.

From his early days of playing piano and discovering the likes of Kraftwerk, The Sisters of Mercy and Depeche Mode through his father's record collection, his passion for electronic music began.

After a few back and forth emails, Matthew spoke passionately about how his taste in music evolved to encompass electronic sounds from across the spectrum of electro, house, techno and bass music. Inspired by the wealth of talent in Ireland and abroad, his influences include Desert Sound Colony, Pepe, 96 Back and Long Island Sound to name a few.

Last year saw Matthew's first release on the Birmingham label Fly By Night Recordings, an ethereal electro number to compliment a time where floating through space might be preferable. This year Matthew plans to expand his musical horizons in new directions with a back catalogue of unreleased tracks that grows week upon week as the lockdown continues,  today culminating in his self released EP called Deep Blue, which also features a remix from The Droid, who we are fans of.

@alexindex makes his debut on @ruffhouse-industries with the 'Four Point Five' EP, featuring four heavy-hitting originals backed by remixes from @jossymitsu and Circuit 900.

The EP is the latest release from the Copenhagen-based producer, whose tracks are a melting pot of syncopated UK funky rhythms, grime-influenced melodies, and warping basslines, featuring the skippy shuffle and processed vocals of ‘Elvish Ways’.

Premiere: Alex Index 'Elvish Ways'

We welcome a Tuesday afternoon premiere from Page One today, as we feature his track 'All Dancers' from his 6 track All Dancers EP.

With a string of self releases on SoundCloud and Bandcamp, Page One steps up with his first label release, as his All Dancers EP is picked up by German label, Not At Sine. 

Being heavily influenced by the likes of DVS1, Mike Denhart, Coco Myor, Fadi Mohem and Malin Genie (who's already supporting the release) plus being an avid collector of records, Page One to this point has been mixing and producing music from home. 

The 6 track EP so far has two tracks available to listen via Bandcamp, with this third track exclusively available right here. Today we premiere the title track 'All Dancers', which is a broken beat retro number, with echoes of rave hysteria throughout. This and the tracks available on Bandcamp, 'Un Div' and 'Shed Of The Past' show the varied range of styles we can expect to hear from the full release.

The release is available digitally and on a limited edition high-bias cassette tape, hand numbered and limited to 25. Each cassette is unique and gets hand stamped and numbered once ordered.
