Called To Communion - Why Did God Make Tornadoes?

Attached to this recording is the official insignia of the pope, which consists of a threefold crown with a set of keys. The Pope is the Bishop of Rome. Catholics believe that the Pope has the authority of St. Peter.  In the the gospel, we hear about Our Lord giving the keys of the kingdom of heaven to St. Peter.  We Catholics believe that St. Peter handed on that authority to the Man he established as his replacement; that man being the Bishop of Rome, who in turn handed on that authority to his successors. In my homily this morning, I wanted to make the point that the authority and responsibility of the keys are not absolutely exclusive to St. Peter and his successors; to a lesser or greater degree all of us who are baptized share in the authority and the responsibility of the Keys albeit in union with the successor of St. Peter.  I also wanted to make the point that in various ways we open doors to give people access to Christ and his Divine Mercy, but we must do it with the same profession of faith which St. Peter made; that Jesus is truly Lord and Savior, and the only way to the Father. Today as we celebrate the first Sunday of Advent, we are reminded that Jesus came once before and He will come again.  And that as we are preparing for Christmas, a remembrance of His first coming, why we should on a daily basis prepare for His second coming.  Today we are also reminded that God made a promise to His people Israel in today's first reading from Isaiah and that Jesus was the fulfillment of that promise.  So today as we begin Advent I focus on God keeping His promises and in the homily I also include a true story from Matthew Kelly's book, "Rediscovering Catholicism" about the underground Catholic Church.  Happy Advent everyone!

A God Who Keeps His Promises

In the Gospel today we see Jesus, the sinless one, allowing Himself to be baptized by John the Baptist in the River Jordan.  He did not need it, yet He allowed Himself to be baptized.  Why is that?  In the homily today I explain how allowing Himself to be baptized shows Jesus' humility, was necessary for the sake of identification of who He was, and how it propels Jesus into His public ministry.  In setting the example for us, it ought to inspire us too to be humble, to understand just how important it is to be identified as a child a God through Baptism, and a gentle reminder that we too are part of God's plan and share in His mission in taking the Gospel message to the ends of the earth,
