Called To Communion - Why Did God Make Tornadoes?

Attached to this recording is the official insignia of the pope, which consists of a threefold crown with a set of keys. The Pope is the Bishop of Rome. Catholics believe that the Pope has the authority of St. Peter.  In the the gospel, we hear about Our Lord giving the keys of the kingdom of heaven to St. Peter.  We Catholics believe that St. Peter handed on that authority to the Man he established as his replacement; that man being the Bishop of Rome, who in turn handed on that authority to his successors. In my homily this morning, I wanted to make the point that the authority and responsibility of the keys are not absolutely exclusive to St. Peter and his successors; to a lesser or greater degree all of us who are baptized share in the authority and the responsibility of the Keys albeit in union with the successor of St. Peter.  I also wanted to make the point that in various ways we open doors to give people access to Christ and his Divine Mercy, but we must do it with the same profession of faith which St. Peter made; that Jesus is truly Lord and Savior, and the only way to the Father. Today as we celebrate the first Sunday of Advent, we are reminded that Jesus came once before and He will come again.  And that as we are preparing for Christmas, a remembrance of His first coming, why we should on a daily basis prepare for His second coming.  Today we are also reminded that God made a promise to His people Israel in today's first reading from Isaiah and that Jesus was the fulfillment of that promise.  So today as we begin Advent I focus on God keeping His promises and in the homily I also include a true story from Matthew Kelly's book, "Rediscovering Catholicism" about the underground Catholic Church.  Happy Advent everyone!

A God Who Keeps His Promises

In the Gospel today we see Jesus, the sinless one, allowing Himself to be baptized by John the Baptist in the River Jordan.  He did not need it, yet He allowed Himself to be baptized.  Why is that?  In the homily today I explain how allowing Himself to be baptized shows Jesus' humility, was necessary for the sake of identification of who He was, and how it propels Jesus into His public ministry.  In setting the example for us, it ought to inspire us too to be humble, to understand just how important it is to be identified as a child a God through Baptism, and a gentle reminder that we too are part of God's plan and share in His mission in taking the Gospel message to the ends of the earth,

Attached to this recording is a photo of a St. Dismas Medal.  St. Dismas is the patron saint of prisoners, and he is identified as the "good thief" who was crucified with Jesus. I gave this homily on Nov. 30, 2019: Reading proper to the Feast of St. Andrew; Ordinary form of the Roman Catholic Mass; 8:00 AM Saturday Mass at St. John's in Rapids City.  The "St. Andrew Christmas Novena" begins today.  There are strange things about this novena: It's not a novena; It makes no mention of St. Andrew; we have no idea where it originates.   In this homily, I actually talk about St. Andrew, how his legacy is part of the formation of the early Church, and being today is Saturday- a day in honor of the Blessed Virgin Mary- I talk about Mary being the Queen of the Apostles.  I also talk about the French protesting "Black Friday" and I also make a passing reference to basketball being the 8th sacrament in the minds of many Catholics.

What Does This Have To Do With St. Andrew?

I gave this homily on Nov. 30. 2019: Readings proper to 1st Sunday of Advent, Cycle "A" Sunday Readings; Ordinary form of the Roman Catholic Mass; 4:00 PM Saturday Vigil Mass at St. John's in Rapids City.  The second reading for this Sunday's Mass contains some of the most famous verses of the bible, for it was through these verses that the great St. Augustine found conversion.  This is the first in a series of three homilies on the readings for the First Sunday of Advent.  This particular homily is about Romans 13:11-14.  You could consider this "Part A" with "Part B" on Romans given at the 8:00 AM Mass.  Attached to this recording is Fra Angelico's depiction of the "Conversion of St. Augustine".  I think this painting vividly depicts "the bottom" which St. Augustine had reached; the moment when he was ready to "take and read" St. Paul's call to conversion.

I gave this homily on Dec. 3, 2019: Readings proper to Tuesday of the First Week of Advent; Ordinary form of the Roman Catholic Mass; 8:00 AM Tuesday Mass at St. John's in Rapids City. Sometimes, after we have done our best, that best must collapse so that God’s dreams for us may be fulfilled. This thought may help us in times like ours, when our beloved Church seems diminished and in some disarray.  Attached to this recording is a photo of two very unlikely animal friends.  There are multitudes of photos and videos on the internet documenting these strange occurrences between animals that would normally eat each other.   I can't help but to think of Isaiah's prophecy: "Then the wolf shall be a guest of the lamb, and the leopard shall lie down with the kid; The calf and the young lion shall browse together, with a little child to guide them."  In this recording, I also talk about St. Francis Xavier who had dreams that didn't quite come true.

I gave this homily on Dec. 28, 2019: Readings proper to the Feast of the Holy Innocents; ordinary form of the Roman Catholic Mass; 8:00 AM Mass in honor of the Blessed Virgin Mary at St. John's in Rapids City.  On Dec. 28th the Church celebrates the Feast of the Holy Innocents.  King Herod ordered the killing of each boy under the age of two that lived in Bethlehem and the environs. Each baby boy killed that morning over two-thousand years ago died because he was mistaken for Jesus. To the killers, the children were indistinguishable from Christ.  In this recording, I try to show how this horrible event is connected to the other elements of the 12 days of Christmas.  I also ponder what caused King Herod to do such a horrible thing.  Today is a Pro-Life Feast Day.  Today, the Church recommends to the faithful that they pray in a special way for all children whose lives are threatened by abortion, starvation, and war.  Attached to this recording is a flyer advertising the "Breakfast for Babies" Event that is happening at our parish on Jan. 26th.  The diocese is organizing a bus trip to the Chicago "Right to Life" March.
