Giant Swan are debuting on Mannequin Records through the Death of the Machines serie, the dancefloor/experimental oriented side of the label, dedicated to new artists.

Robin Stewart & Harry Wright team up to create an acerbic marriage of energised, aggressive dance music, quaking bass and hypnotic electronic noise. Across a table of machines and pedals, incorporating abused guitar and liberal vocal manipulation, Giant Swan create a cross-breed of hypnotic bass, industrial percussion and disorientating energy delivered with telepathic intricacy.

Having dedicated her life to unearthing the long lost gems of the early 80s via her Minimal Wave imprint, as well as curating thrilling modern music for her sub-label Cititrax, Veronica Vasicka has made a name for herself calling the shots from behind the curtain. Today, she steps into the spotlight as the headline artist with her highly anticipated debut solo 12″ on Regis’ imprint, Downwards. ‘From Here’ was recorded in 2004, with no intent to be released. Framed by a larger, more intimate process for Veronica, who was then keeping a sonic diary of her daily adventures via a 4-track recorder and analog synths, it puts into perspective the personal evolution and singular nature of one of today’s most acclaimed DJs and selectors to frequent the stages.

Setting up an out and out anxiogenic, eerie industrial atmosphere from your darkest fantasies, Veronica’s original mix burns slowly, like a glowing candle in the cold night. Exposing a musical identity both sensuous and disenchanted, the track gets all the more dancy and carnal in the hands of Regis, who tweaks it into a smooth libertine late-nighter. Second to counter-seal ‘From Here’, former Nitzer Ebb and Depeche Mode collaborator Paul Kendall transforms it into a more riff-charged, busy sound design where textured membranes dangerously bleed into one another as distortions convulse recognisable shapes into an abstract tableau of machine whispers and altered fragrances. To top things off in regal manner, Robert Hampson – founder of the legendary band Loop and also Main – adds a propulsive, hi-NRG twist and delay-soaked dimension to the vibrant multiverse that makes for a variedly-nuanced debut 12″. A unique, shape-shifting object that suits Veronica Vasicka’s complex musical persona like a glove. And finally, the artwork is designed by Veronica herself, featuring two self-portraits she shot on 35mm film at 16 years of age.

If heavy industry is a thing of the past, no-one told Identified Patient. For the past few years, he has been a one-man factory: by day, assembling component parts of acid, techno and all varieties of wave (dark, cold, minimal) on the production line; by night, a DJ dynamo pulsing with so much energy he could power a small city. His style is the kind of churning, lithe, fractured machine funk that could make Trent Reznor weep with envy – mean but clean, sinister and stomping but crucially, never overconfident or overblown. After two show-stopping performances at the parent festival last year, Signals In Snakes marks Identified Patient’s first Dekmantel release, for the technoid UFO sub-label.

Opener “The Drip” lives up to its namesake, slowly lowering elements into the field of play with partner in crime Sophie Du Palais. No prizes for guessing what exactly might be dripping through this fetishistic slow burner, so we’ll let your sordid imagination run wild. “Let Me Do It” takes the pent-up anguish and lets rip with the mood of unearthed electrical wires sending sparks flying, an upscaling of intensity that continues on “Chantal Chant.” Envisioned as the moments of tension before a gladiator fight in ancient Greece, the acidysound is that of barely restrained militant chaos. Our battered fighter’s swan-song, “Lucy’s Comeback,” marshals the dark undercurrents of bass and brings us to a close. Giving a new lick of shiny paint to a well-weathered industrial exoskeleton, Signals In Snakes is one to unify the cold-blooded villains and hot-blooded lovers all summer long.

On his debut solo LP ‘Utility’, Barker [@voltek] turns his focus toward melding experimentation and dancefloor pragmatism with the psychology behind the musical decision making process.

‘Utility’ is a playful but non-ironic musical approach to a whole spectrum of utilitarian and transhumanist ideas: from models for quantifying pleasure and “gradients of bliss” to abolishing suffering for sentient beings (not just people) through the ethical use of drugs and nanotechnology. Over nine tracks, Barker’s vision ebbs and flows through waves of deeply psychedelic musical vignettes; free-floating and futuristic melodies and rhythms as targeted brain stimulation.
