In the bustling world of instrumental grime, Mr. Mitch’s ‘Peace Dub’ phenomenon - initially a concept aimed squarely at flipping grime’s ‘war dub’ complex on it’s head - has fast become a reputable sub-genre all of it’s own. With a series of his own peace edits garnering plenty of recognition online over the course of 2014, Mitch has enlisted a trio of new-school producers to assist him in re-contextualising four unconventional classics and with it, christen a new series of peace-themed white label 12”s.

Simply titled PEACE001, Mitch is joined by Gobstopper signees Strict Face and Loom, as well as elusive beat-making trio Silk Road Assassins on the label’s first ever physical record - a body of work that takes instrumental grime even further into unchartered territory. Kicking off with the brooding heartache of Mitch’s fuzzy, emotionally charged re-rub of Dru Hill’s ‘How Deep Is Your Love’, there’s also space for Strict Face to turn an icier, washed-out hand to the peace aesthetic on ‘Alice’ - his beautifully mellow, minimalist rework of Alice Deejay classic ‘Better Off Alone’.

Latest signee Loom opts to take a deconstructionist route through Kate Bush’s ‘Running Up That Hill’ as glitchy melodies, ushered reverb and pitched-up vocal loops meet harsh, industrial sampling in unerringly dystopian collision of ideas, whilst Silk Road Assassins sign off with their take on T-Pain’s ‘Im Sprung’. Trickling, iced-out melodies and pitched-down vocals are laid over dark, menacing bass rumbles in a tribute to the sound that has already earmarked the trio as refreshingly slick sound designers.

Across a varied back catalogue, Mr. Mitch’s Gobstopper imprint has primarily operated under the loose classification of Grime but has consistently tested its boundaries sufficiently in order to steer it clear of any real pigeon-holing. Previous releases have come from Social State, Bloom, Strict Face and Mr. Mitch himself and throughout, Gobstopper has remained a platform for talented oddballs to experiment to meritorious effect. 

Next in line is another auspicious talent from London: Tarquin. Having garnered support from the likes of Plastician and Mickey Pearce and having had tracks aired on Rinse and NTS, Tarquin steps up and marries with Gobstopper’s ethos in offering up 2 fantastically esoteric productions that meld elements from the gamut of UK Bass music with a degree of sweet melody that lends them perfectly to the changing of the seasons. 

‘Kid U’ kicks things off and uses pitch and envelope experimentation to layer darting vocal samples with whips, clangs and plucked strings that work together to build an allaying yet challenging recording. ‘Lost My Marbles’ then gets off to a pacy start. Claps on the 1, choked hats and an urgent synth tone rattle towards a plunge into halftime before discordant tones and nifty sampling decorate a baffling concoction that caps off another coup for Gobstopper and a fine addition to the catalogue.

If you’ve been seeing Branko play around the world in the last year, chances are you’ve heard this track before. After serving as a secret weapon for his lively DJ sets for months, the Lisbon-based producer decided to give it away for free as the Upper Cuts Season 6 closer, ending yet another series of global club music anthems compiled by the most tropical label in Europe.

Branko decides to give his listeners a DJ-friendly anthem, with its tough syncopated rhythm, warped looping vocals and fierce anything-goes attitude contrasting with the textured and melodic approach to global club music he presented on his solo debut album ‘ATLAS’ earlier this year. As we are almost at the end of Branko’s busiest year yet, the Enchufada head honcho seized the opportunity to give his followers one more treat before going back on tour, while also making it possible for the Upper Cuts free download series to go full circle, ending this season with a track by the same artist that kicked it off three years ago.

It’s exactly the kind of track we’ve been giving away since the Upper Cuts series officially started, shedding all non-essentials to create a straightforward club beat, which is exactly why it’s so perfect to signal the end of this three-year adventure. That’s right, all good things must end and the Upper Cuts series will retire after this to give space for new and exciting projects inside the Enchufada camp.

The Berlin-based duo Africaine 808 – comprised of Nomad and Dirk Leyers (half of the Closer Musik project) – have been challenging the norm with their distinctive flavour of West African bass, rhythms and samples mixed into moreish disco and house tracks. It can quite simply be summarised by their "Africaine 808" name.

In early 2016, they bring their feature length debut, Basar, to New York-based imprint and partymaker, Golf Channel – home to Mark E, Juju & Jordash and DJ Nature. Basar's twelve tracks demonstrate how well Africaine 808 have perfected this intercontinental blend, with "Balla Balla" being a standout hands down. No more than a few seconds in, and we're already way, with something tribal lying at the root of its funk. An uplifting, instant crowd-pleaser for any sweaty dancefloor.

Business As Usual February 2016: Luke Solomon, Seven Davis Jr & Adam Shelton

Panthera Krause's music-making habits teeter on the precipice between moody and outright fun house; a technique which has done wonders for the Leipzig melody maker since his early years. The mould was set with his weekly podcasts and 2012's "Cassandra" on local imprint O*RS. Then further solidified via the Yorikke EP in 2013 - a three-track mid-summer trip on Riotvan - and the delights of his Rules EP (2014) on Lobster Theremin and the Laika EP (2014) on Riotvan.

The Uncanny Valley connection was established during the back end of last year. The pumping “Coochie” formed part of the Uncanny Valley: Five Years On Parole release and was quite the foretaste. And here we arrive at "Umami"; a lesson in colourful and let-loose four-to-the-floor which first saw light on our recent Dresden show with the UV fam.
