“I have always been intrigued by playing audio back at different speeds. Be it speeding up breakbeats to make Jungle or slowing down pop music to make drawn out nostalgic atmospheres. Some of my first experiments with pitch were with my brother. We’d record ourselves onto cassette and use the hi speed dubbing feature to change the pitch of our voices. If you held the play button down half way it would cause the tape to play back at different speeds - mangling the audio. Over the past year I became fascinated with playing on 7 inch records on 33. New rhythms, grooves and textures appear when you change the pitch of audio. It can totally alter the emotional quality of a piece of music you thought you knew so well - creating new artefacts with a familiar yet dreamlike quality. I started to wonder what the Astrophonica catalogue would sound like slowed down. So I made ‘Slow Astro’. Shout out DJ Screw…”

A recording of DJ Clarky on Eruption 101.3 FM from 17th August 1996 - in the midst of ‘The Blue Note era’. Clarky worked at Black Market Records, which became BM Soho, and also played at the Metalheadz Blue Note sunday sessions in the mid 90s. He played across the board from chilled atmospheric to raw tech step and this set is exactly that - There are a couple of Dillinja tracks on here I didn’t immediately recognise, so perhaps some unreleased stuff on here? the tape was recorded and passed on to me by my friend @robbrie aka Rob Phokus whom I’ve known since the early drumfunk years and has been a big part in the runnings of Scientific Wax. He sent me a load of amazing recordings so look out for those coming very soon on 0860.fm. Big up Rob!

A recording of DJ Wild Child & MC Skibbadee 16th Sept 1996 on Kool FM.

Amazing selection from DJ Wildchild along with Skibba’s Iconic MC style. Unfortunately we lost Skibba recently and this early recording is a great example of why he went on to have an incredible career as an MC and influence many that came after.

It’s also worth pointing out that at the time Wild Child was the only female DJ on Kool FM and in general Pirate Radio was indeed mainly men. It is what it is and it’s important to understand this and to see how different and more diverse things are today.

SLOW860 is the latest chapter in Charlie Fieber, aka Fracture’s, celebration of pirate radio culture, merging it with his Chopped & Screwed-inspired Slow Astro world. This third "Slow" adventure pushes the concept further, adding another album to his critically acclaimed 0860 project. The result is a 60-minute, unbroken collage of 14 new compositions and 6 'slow ambient' 0860 remixes, interwoven with pirate radio skits and fuzz. Drawing inspiration from The KLF’s Chill Out and his teenage experiences falling asleep to stations like Kool FM and Weekend Rush, familiar elements from Fracture’s work emerge, yet remain hauntingly just out of reach as he deconstructs and extends 0860.

⁠DJ Bailey⁠ is an important DJ in the history of Jungle and Drum & Bass, a resident at the legendary ⁠Metalheadz Blue Note Sessions⁠ in the mid 90s, a 10-year BBC 1Xtra DJ in the 00s and of course has a history in Pirate Radio on Energy 87.9 FM. He’s an experienced A&R and label owner with Instasound and the passion for finding and presenting new music runs deep. 


He was one of the first established DJs to support my early music and supported it in his DJ sets in the early 2000s and invited myself and Neptune on to his 1xtra show in 2011 so I was always going to have him up on the podcast. 


We discuss how his background in Pirate Radio shaped his career, being a Metalheadz DJ, streaming his own show ‘Straight From The Bedroom’ on UStream, and his move from cutting edge DJ to passionate archivist and story teller. Make no mistake, Bailey still has his finger on the pulse and continues to host a show on London’s Kool FM. This guy lives for radio and shows no sign of stopping.

Also included is a meticulously curated 64-page zine, Somewhere About Town, designed by Utile. The zine features photography of towers that housed the pirate stations Charlie first tuned into, portraits of contributors to the 0860 podcast, transcripts from broadcasts, police reports, and details of a notorious DTI raid. It’s a snapshot of the culture—a homage to zines like Ravescene and Atmosphere, which offered grassroots reviews and commentary ignored by mainstream press, capturing the DIY spirit of pirate radio.

⁠Sweetpea⁠ is a Producer, DJ, Radio Presenter and Mentor from London who cut her teeth on the legendary ⁠Rude FM 88.2⁠ in late '00s. She is another guest on the show that has gone from humble Pirate Radio beginnings to ⁠hosting a show on BBC Radio⁠, and someone who has a deep respect for community and the uplifting of others via her work with ⁠EQ50⁠ - a mentoring initiative set up to address the imbalance of women in electronic music.
We get into her time on Rude FM and the legendary 'Rush Hour' shows. The clue is in the name but let's just say they were no rules all night back 2 back sessions. Sweetpea now has a show on Kool FM which she is very passionate about doing live as she still gets a buzz out of the interaction and possibility for mishaps and technical issues. I too have a a passion for live radio and in this age of prerecorded shows I think it's important to keep it alive.

Fracture returns to the label for the first solo release since The Limit VIP to kick off another LTD 10” series. APHALTD001 sees Fracture giving the VIP treatment to one of his favourite hardcore records from 1992; The Skeleton Krew’s ‘Luv Ta Luv Ya’. Originally released on Skeleton Recordings, it was a big favourite of DJ Randall and LTJ Bukem but as a young Charlie Fracture was only 13 at the time it was pirate radio where he first heard it: 

“I had a tape from my favourite station, Weekend Rush. It was a Vinyl Groove set with MC Shabba over it and a lot of the records on there totally blew my mind. I’ve since found out what pretty much all of the records are but there was this one, Luv Ta Luv Ya, that I only recently managed to get an ID on and lost my mind again. I hadn’t heard it outside of that tape, which I sadly lost.” 

Soon after finding out the details of the record, Fracture took to twitter to pass on his love for the track and praise to DJ Monita. It turned out the praise was mutual and that he was very much still active. Very soon after that a remix was arranged . . . sometimes the internet does actually work, or was it something in the stars?

The Digital Delay Dub of What’s Gwarnin? Is out today. It’s a fresh take on the original with different drums, bass and a King Tubby inspired approach to dubbing the vocals using a Boss DD3 digital delay pedal, a Strymon Cloudverb and a Mackie 1604 to do live FX throws. So much fun. 

I decided on a vocal / dub package for this release as I’m a massive fan of this UK Garage 12” format. Loads of amazing 12s from MJ Cole and Ramsey & Fen had the big vocal on A side and then the murkier, rawer club dub on the flip. So much more than just an instrumental. In the words of MJ Cole “you had the vocal one in the bag and you’ve finished that and then the dub was just playtime, do whatever you want. You’ve got one in the bag, just do something rough and quick and ready”

The second in the Gradients compilation album series and curated again by London producer and label head Fracture, Vol.2 celebrates Fracture's forward-thinking ethos, the label's expansive stylistic roots and the sheer brilliance of catching a vibe.

Vol.2 is another all-killer-no-filler experience this time featuring: Warp/Ninja/Rephlex/Mu releasing and electronic generation shaping Luke Vibert dropping acid at 165BPM, a dream come true reboot of Om Unit & Machinedrum's dope AF collaborative alias "Dream Continuum", DnB legend, (Full Cycle label head, Reprazent and Breakbeat Era member) DJ Die & Digital Soundboy Dismantle's double heavyweight "DieMantle" partnership, full-time LA Footworker and Teklife OG Taso, NYC Beatmaker & Ninja Tune & Planet Mu artist Falty DL. PLUS.... label mainstays and big time soundboys all; Parisienne dub wizard Moresounds, the Modern Junglist with the golden touch, Sully and a NXLVL-Powers-Combine-Triumvirate Sam Binga, Lewis James and Rider Shafique getting 'Everfresh'. Fracture himself contributes a longtime club weapon from him and long-time production partner Neptune and give us the first taste of his experimental 160 BPM Fast Techno aka Turbo Berghain (consider yourself on notice. You heard it here first!) Add in Hyperdub's freshest, Proc Fiskal, who continues his 'damn son' unique streak and Lit international "insta-sign" contributions from Canada's Groves, Spain's Iberian Juke label heads BSN Posse (Broken Lip & Stay Puft), LA's ONHELL and Portland's Sigrah and you might see what Charlie Fracture sees.. Vibes for miles. In our opinion this is some of the freshest most exciting music this year so hats off to all the vibe catchers and to Fracture for bottling some of their best.

It really is my pleasure to present to you Astrophonica's second full length various artist compilation: Gradients Vol. 2. It carries on seamlessly from where Vol. 1 left off with a mix of label regulars, new names and some real head turners. It took some time to curate given the success of Vol. 1 and I'm very proud of it. The music reflects the label perfectly.

As a producer, DJ and label owner Charlie Fieber continues to be an important figure in the development and innovation of UK electronic music genres with a career spanning over two decades. As Fracture, Fieber’s output is prolific and never stands still. From the hyper sped up Techno sound of Turbo to the genre blending Footwork Jungle collaborations with Teklife regulars DJ Earl, DJ Spinn and DJ Taso. He is constantly experimenting and flipping the script and 2022 saw the release of the world building Ambient Electro album Omura with Sam Binga. Releases and affiliations have come from some of the UK’s legendary hardcore continuum labels such as Goldie’s Metalheadz, dBridge’s Exit records, where in 2016 Fieber was part of the mysterious Richie Brains supergroup with fellow experimenters Alix Perez, Chimpo, Fixate, Om Unit, Sam Binga and Stray, and more recently with Alix Perez’s 1985 which saw the curveball collaboration with Kenyan artist Nah Eeto. Fieber’s latest work is his most ambitious to date; '0860’ is an album, radio station and interview series that explores the history and legacy of Pirate Radio and its importance in the development of UK underground music.
As a DJ his sound has travelled with appearances on BBC Radio 1, BBC 6 Music, Boiler Room, Fact Mag, Rinse FM, Keep Hush and multiple US, EU, UK and Asia tours. 
In 2009 the label, Astrophonica, was set up as an output for his own music with Neptune and has since become a home for other like minded and experimental artists such as Sully, Client_03 and Moresounds. Fieber’s impeccable A&R has led to a flawless and in demand back catalogue championed from Annie Mac to Sherelle and with multiple nominations in DJ Mag’s Best Of British awards.
