The recording sessions for my last EP, 'Insert Coins To Continue', were pretty hard going. There was a lot of dark and mechanical soundscapes being produced to create the dystopian theme I wanted to portray within the release. Spending weeks and weeks constructing, and being surrounded by, those kind of industrial noises became a bit of a torturous exercise at times so inbetween developing all those caustic and mangled sounds I would take a break and play around with some of the other instruments lying around the studio and attempt to create something a bit more light hearted and carefree.

"Synesthesia" is the result of those chill out sessions.

Everything On An Even Keel

Collaborative sound design by Berlin artist Wilfried Hanrath 
& P è n i n ș o l a r for the Disquiet Junto Project 0352 : Layering Permutations where both Wilfried and I worked along side to angulate layering permutations w' allocated counter-melodies along the outer parameters  onto its final core by atopic & hovering variations in the confines of three "static" stacks of fathomage that seemed to align the outline of the assignment consummately.

The Assignment : Play something melodic atop two variations.

Step 1 : The idea is to have a simple melody of some sort, and to then have two variations on that melody play simultaneous with it. The key word here is “melody.” 

Step 2 : Come up with a melody, and then come up with means to create variations on it. Think of the variations as permutations of the melody. Try to have the variations not veer too far from the original. As you develop the variations, think about relative balance between the three layers.

Step 3 : Record a short piece of music in which the three layers are stacked atop each other. You might perform the layers separately and then combine them, or you might have a means for them to play simultaneously. You might have the balance between the tracks remain static throughout, or you may change relative volume at times.

Nomads, Bedouin, Tuareg and Berbers
they populate a land of clay and kings
on the move.
Visible, 'the plateau', flat and linear
natural border that beats back.

In remote camps, the noise 
of electric pumps, wi-fi. Berber women
sit alone, rinsing dishes in the tents.
They laugh and wave at me to join.
I record their voices, fixing the hijab
on my parka.
Are we all post-humans?
