Fiddle & Banjo: Tunes from the North, Songs from the South is the collaboration of fiddler Karrnnel Sawitsky, and banjo player Daniel Koulack and featuring vocals by Joey Landreth (from The Bros Landreth). This album explores the creative possibilities of this classic old time palette; both by creating new fresh arrangements of traditional music, and creating original compositions that have as a seed the sensibility of these traditions. It is a unique creative collaboration of instrumental styles, imagery and storytelling.

It was really mostly about Jorma for me, but Paul Kantner was easily the second coolest guy in the band, and he died today, and alas but I don't have a handy arrangement for any of his songs so this'll have to do. This arrangement may be handy, but it's kind of half-assed. Jorma himself plays it in drop D if I'm not mistaken - I've seen him a few times over the years - but I never bothered learning it 'right;' this is in open D, and pretty much ignores any attempt at the great middle harmonies of the original version. It's also pretty muddled - this arrangement probably stems from 1990, when I first found open D and started trying to play all kinds of stuff that in the end remained out of my league, and I haven't revisited it for a while. Plenty of flubs in the middle.

I was actually a big enough Airplane fan that at 15 years old I went to their 1987 (per my memory, I haven't looked it up) reunion show. It was... terrible. The old stuff didn't sound half bad, but they played the entire reunion record, and boy was that a stinker. I don't think any '60s band put out a decent record in the late '80s (CSNY's American Dream, anyone? That record broke my heart and shattered many of my music hero illusions.) But hey, they let Hot Tuna do the intermission...

Little Beggar Man

The street the song is named after "Calle De Las Ursulas" is in Salamanca, Spain. I spent three months there back in my youth and wrote the tune in its honour. Larissa O' Grady and Douglas Kelly are playing violin and cello respectively. I'm on the Spanish Lute, or Laud.

The track is on my first album "Songs From An Outpost." 
I'm mixing another  "Where Splendour Falls" at the moment. Made me think of this tune from the first cd. Speaking of Cd's (or lack of) the new venture will be released on digital download and vinyl only in the coming months.
