I wrote this song about the concept of “not going to bed angry”. Couples fight, but saying “its fine” or “whatever” instead of having a conversation to resolve the disagreement is unacceptable in a mature loving relationship.

"Bonaparte's Retreat" is an old Irish American fiddle tune that has traversed time and genres. Among its various versions, William Stepp’s rendition stands out, which later became an integral part of Aaron Copland’s celebrated work, "Rodeo". The most recognizable piece within this work, "Hoe-Down," achieved further fame as part of the soundtrack in the childhood classic movie, "An American Tail: Fievel Goes West," in addition to James Cameron’s "Titanic"; it was also prominently featured in the memorable "Beef. It’s what’s for dinner" advertising campaign.

This tune unexpectedly made a comeback in our lives during a private dinner party at somebody's barn in the backwoods of Waxahachie, TX. Without prior planning, we found ourselves playing what we remembered of the melody. It had been over a decade since our high-school orchestra days, yet despite the years, the familiar theme flowed from our fingers. We were as astonished as the dinner guests. In an almost serendipitous moment, one of our friends captured this impromptu performance on camera. We decided to share this moment online, for our small audience. To our astonishment, the video rapidly gained traction, marking our first viral internet experience with over 3.5 million views.

Encouraged by this unexpected popularity, we were inspired to craft our own arrangement of "Bonaparte's Retreat" or “Hoe-Down”, infusing it with our personal style and the nostalgia of our shared musical past. This project, sparked by a spontaneous performance, turned into a heartfelt homage to a tune that had unknowingly been a significant part of our lives.

Hoe-Down

This is a song originally written and performed by Soundcloud artist 'A Girl From Wonder' (@user-712848711), whose music I've admired for a while. I've loved this one since the first time I heard it, and aways wanted to try some sort of collaboration, but it's hard to mess with the stark simple beauty of the original. But here's my attempt to add some dashes of colour to her voice and guitar strumming, adding instruments like upright bass, organ, banjo, cello, and percussion. The banjo parts are mainly a bunch of sound samples I found and cut up and arranged to fit in with the melody I wanted to play (wish I could just play banjo instead!). I tried to keep her evocative voice the main focal point, and we're both pretty happy with how this turned out.
