For the 29th release, the spanish trio, Maniatics, is back on Kosenprod!

The beginning of 2017 saw an unstoppable momentum grow for Kosen Productions. The Toulouse based record label has continued to grow since its inception, becoming a pivotal part of the drum & bass underground with every successive release. And alongside their heavyweight roster, which has seen them expand throughout every sound crevasse the genre offers, they have marked France as an epicentre for its growing reach.

Coming next from the imprint is Maniatics’ ‘Fight the Might’ EP, providing three brand new, dangerously fashioned cuts which will become staples within sets throughout festival season. The Spanish trio have pushed their growling, monstrous sonic weapons into hard-hitting DJ sets across Europe and beyond; a relatively new production outfit, they’ve rode a meteoric ascent into the limelight since their first release. This forthcoming EP will see them pushed even further onto their pedestal, moving their success to new heights.

Title-track ‘Fight the Might’ begins with eerie, blaring atmospherics, before slowly beginning to build until a full blown assault is unleashed onto the aural synapses. Distorted, grating snare winds up underneath the mix, before snipped up vocal sample slices through the growling composition. On first listen, you’re made acutely aware of what Maniatics are all about. Each chiselled groove slices through with more impact than the last and you’re left to bask in its ferocity. ‘Pressure’ follows in a similar fashion, despite being a more gradual build - one which becomes overwhelming before its seismic implosion. With rattling hi-hats and a brooding bassline beginning to weave itself through each carefully constructed layer, Maniatics once again go in for the kill with each meticulous breakdown. The trio deliver blow after blow of crushing force.

And finally comes ‘Teenagers’, drawing forward on a more melodic vibe but still devastating in its impact. Winding between elevating synths and clattering drum patterns, the track suddenly detonates, with a hip-hop sample leading the charge. Doing what they do best, Maniatics create a skipping, firing set of beats, apt for the dancefloor yet still leaving destruction in their wake. From start to finish, the EP continues its assault and its one which leaves a lasting impression on its listener.

‘Fractals’, a full spectrum of the production standard Impak has at his disposal whilst nodding to his intricate layering and intimidating atmospherics. Stepping down the tempo and manifesting a bassline which treads carefully between each twist of metallic percussion, he merges an intricate underpinning to its throbbing skeleton. The depth of the forest was unknown to those who lived at its verge. Shadows cast from the dense canopy seemed to reach out towards those who passed close by, wisps of darkness unfurling and twisting around the limbs of the youngest that dared to play at its sinister edge. The oldest stories of its roots passed across the creaking voices of the town pensioners hunched in the safety of others, discretely whispered and shot through with fearful looks. The allure of that dense and ancient place stretched back eternal, and bitter consequence waited for those who breached its dark heart.  The crew ignored the nonsense of such crones, pulling the carts of equipment under the cover of dusk until the sounds of the town were but a memory. The speaker stacks were raised against the night, strings of lights hung between the trees and purity of disturbed bass rolled against the surrounding trunks as they disentangled themselves from the mundane fiber of the lives they left behind. Twisting against one another as they let flood serotonin delight, they ignited an orgy of sonic symbiosis as the rave found its wings and took flight. The spores drifted imperceptibly into the clearing from the darkness around, lodging without discomfort in the eyes, ears and noses of the gathered young. And then the screaming started, the undulating mass of the gathering turned inward… devouring itself as limbs were separated from bodies, necks ripped as skin tore loose and the blood flowed freely over the gnashing faces of those left alive at the KILL PARTY… 
  
GYDRA return to EATBRAIN in force, following up their well-received CYBORG EP with the dynamic, darkly driven but funk-laced assault of the KILL PARTY EP. From the old-school drenched piano and ultrafunk of the title track, to the playful sinister intent of PRIMITIVE INSTINCT, the filthy sub explorations of PROBLEM and the predatory sensibilities of IKRA – the 4 tracks within display the dynamic and exploratory character of the production outfit. This is Russian neurofunk at its finest, delivered on the platform that’s tailored exactly to the premiere kinetic nature of its content.

He fled without words from his workplace, the other labourers around glancing quickly up at their fellow tearing across the derelict site of their toil. Ducking between the scaffolds, his hands clawing wretchedly at his heavy form, as his insides churned and wave after wave of pure violence washed through him. He found the entrance, gasping with relief and pain, before dropping swiftly into the cave beneath the foundation and falling starkly into the dim blackness of the tunnels below. Writhing on the cold stone ground, he felt it ripping through his back and up the side of his face, his eyes glazing then filling with the fire of a pure primal energy as he arched his head back and let out a tearing sound of unleashed psychic tearing and the breaking of his mind. It had him in its grasp, claws ripping through his hands – its presence overtaking him and unveiling his true SHAPESHIFTER nature.

AKOV follows up his recent initial foray on the label with a solid step into the EATBRAIN fold in the form of the SHAPESHIFTER EP. Comprising 4 tracks of exquisitely dynamic neurofunk and experimental beats that dares to dive between tempos and deliver an entirely fresh take on the genre. From the outset with title track SHAPESHIFTER, a curve ball hits swift, as a straight intro leads into a drop that stretches reality and deviates between spacious reese action and busy percussion, before heavily reglitching itself into a deliciously wonky form. ABRAXAS leads a more epic path with a shimmering, beautiful intro infused with ethnic aesthetics that gives way to an entirely punishing machinegun drop that only pauses to reload and issue a heavy staccato bass cannon. With GAMES WITH GOD featuring THE CLAMPS, the metallic nature of the drums edges up a notch and the vibe leans toward a more sinister but rolling edge. FIRST CONTACT turns the tempo way down to 128 but elevates the attitude to a new level, delivering a chugging and brutish stepper of a tune that carries its neuro core effectively to the vein.

The range of ideas within the Shapeshifter EP serves as a technical breath of fresh air to a genre that’s build on the concept of progression and experimentation. Akov delivers the manifesto of an artist intent on pushing the sound further, delivered on a label at the forefront of futuristic d&b.
