Carte blanche à Méryll Ampe
sur la notion d'inattendu dans l'improvisation et la composition

wi watt’heure #36 est une carte blanche à l’artiste sonore Méryll Ampe. Formée en sculpture et en arts visuels, Méryll explore la plasticité et la matérialité du son via des expérimentations empiriques et des questionnements de mise en espace. Les jeux rythmiques de percussions, le silence, la résonance, les matières (plâtre, terre…) ou autres phénomènes sonores sont les matériaux à la base de son travail, qui prend la forme de performances sonores, installations, sculptures, volumes et dessins. 

Nous avons invité Méryll à rentrer en résonance et répondre à notre observatoire des différences à partir de sa connaissance de la scène électronique et expérimentale et de son positionnement social. Dans ce numéro #36, elle partage avec nous un moment de recherche  et propose une forme singulière, entre le journal intime et le carnet radiophonique :

« Pour wi watt’heure, j’imagine une trame, un circuit empirique dont le support sera un journal sonore. Un espace en mouvement, dans une dynamique intérieure/extérieure. Des enregistrements de mon quotidien seront orientés sur mes recherches actuelles qui font apparaître des questions sur la manière d'appréhender le médium sonore ainsi que le processus de composition et d’improvisation » (Méryll Ampe).

Dans son atelier, elle convoque trois autres artistes – Michèle Bokanowski, Valérie Vivancos et Nina Garcia – à venir dialoguer avec elle, en distanciel, de la notion d'inattendu dans l'improvisation et la composition. Ces conversations sont entrelacées avec les musiques dans un va et vient entre l'espace de l’atelier, les entretiens, et le concert.

Cérémonie d’écoute païenne

wi watt’heure #37 se fait l’écho du mouvement des théâtres occupés au printemps 2021 en France, en zoomant sur un théâtre, le Théâtre Molière de Sète, et sur une des actions proposées par son collectif d’occupation, le collectif Occupy Molière. L’action choisie est la lecture publique de la liste des 44.764 réfugié·es décédé·es sur la route pour rejoindre l’Europe. Cette liste est régulièrement mise à jour par l’association UNITED Against Refugee Deaths. 

Une lecture publique a eu lieu le 26 juin à Sète, dans le parc Simone Veil. 
Nous avons choisi pour wi watt’heure de donner à entendre la première année, qui liste les réfugié·es décédé·es de mai 2021 à mai 2020. Ces noms et prénoms, ainsi que les raisons du décès, ont été relus et enregistrés le 16 septembre, dans le studio Les Ombres d’Ondes, à l’occasion de cette publication.

L’action est définie comme une « cérémonie d’écoute païenne ». Il s’agit d’un rituel pour nommer, faire résonner et ainsi sortir de l’oubli ces personnes qui restent toujours sous le seuil du visible et de l’audible. Ce geste de deuil est vocalisé près de la mer méditerranée – cette frontière liquide et fluide, mais inaccessible, entre Europe et Afrique – et donné à entendre pour convoquer une écoute collective. 

Dans la continuité, le collectif Occupy Molière souhaite proposer à d’autres collectifs de différentes villes en Europe de le rejoindre dans une action plus large qui serait de relire cette liste, le même jour, partout dans le continent.

Call Back Carousel: Voyages en Grèce
 
An audio time-travelogue… A found sound road trip… A vicarious vacation…

The basis of this piece is a found reel-to-reel tape labeled ‘Voyage Grèce en 1972’ bought from a flea market in Brussels 15 years ago. As might be expected it is a document of a Belgian family camping holiday to Greece. One side of the tape is an audio diary of sorts documenting the trip moment by moment, much of the time recorded in the car in between destinations it seems. This side runs to an epic 3 hours on long play. The other side is a recorded slide show commentary over a backdrop of traditional Greek music at a more modest 2 hours. Although it becomes apparent that there is a wife (referred to only as ‘bobonne’) and child in tow we only ever hear the voice of the father. They don’t even appear in the background. Maybe they were mic shy or maybe they were just never given a look-in. Either way their absence on the tape is perplexing.

I had been invited to Brussels this summer to make a new radio piece for Radio Picnic’s ‘Musica per la radio’ series. I was also supposed to be going on a family holiday to Greece but because of obvious circumstances neither trip has happened. Out of necessity the production of this radiophonic excursion has been my way of taking a holiday without travelling anywhere – a sonic souvenir from a vicarious vacation.

In the composition of the piece excerpts from the tape have been combined with my own field recordings from holidays in Greece decades later in 2005 and 2015. Holiday memories of Greece from different times have been transposed on top of one another, intermingle and become confused. In addition, improvisations with a collection of objects selected for their sound making properties that were bought from the flea market at the same time as the tape have also been incorporated.

Spanish, born in 1975, Francisco Meirino is active since 1994 (as phroq until 2009) in experimental music and live performance. 

His music explores the tension between programmable material and the potential for its failure, he is primarily interested in the idea of recording what is not supposed to be : gear failures, the death of PA systems, magnetic fields and electro-static noises and in how he can use them and hear them radically out of context. 
Francisco Meirino's music is fascinating by its physical intensity and detail precision. 
He mainly works with the computer, modular synthesizer, reel-to-reel tape recorders, magnetic fields detectors, piezo tranducers, field recorders and various home-made electronics. ﻿​

His music is widely published by labels such as :
