This week's Disquiet Junto project had us look at earlier collaborations, and rework them. I choose Sternklang's Dead Center, which incorporated Dan Simpson (https://soundcloud.com/dan-simpson-497607106/disquiet0526-jan-21-look-again-2) and J. Benjamin Neimi's (https://soundcloud.com/user-931021867/january-21-look-again-disquiet0525)collaboration. I added a synth pad hooked up to Stochas, a bass and a droning guitar.

Vayehi erev vayehi boker(2017) for ensemble

Step 1: You’re going to record a piece of music in which not just the pace but the shape of your breathing will provide the foundation. Plan to do so with slow breathing.

Step 2: Spend some time just breathing, and paying attention to the breath. Locate a pace that is comfortable to you

Step 3: Best you can, record yourself breathing. It might take time to get the sound right. Record at least a few minutes.

Step 4: Listen back to the breathing you recorded in Step 3.

Step 5: Make a piece of music using the recording from Step 3. Retain the recording in your new piece of music. The sound of you breathing doesn’t need to be prominent, but it should both provide the shape and pace of your work, and at least occasionally be audible.

naviarhaiku450 – A mountain village

A mountain village
under the piled-up snow
the sound of water.

Regarded as the father of contemporary haiku, Masaoka Shiki was a poet and literary critic during the Meiji period Japan.

He advocated realistic observation by “sketching” (shasei) poems and going out into nature with notebooks, thus abandoning the traditional subjects of haiku of the time. His advice for an aspiring poet was, “Use both imaginary pictures and real ones, but prefer the real ones.”
