From a series of experimentations I did in 1983-1986 on computer aided composition and timbre generation on the apple //e computer.

The first of the recordings made from the Applesoft Basic program "QUATRE.BAS". Recorded in 1984 on a Marantz PMD200 on BASF LH SM cassette. Converted to digital using a Marantz PMD201 straight into a Tascam DR40 at 24 bits. Some dropouts are happening at the beginning of the first track and I will try to redo the conversion using the original deck, once I've repaired it.

QUATRE.BAS will generate semi random (1/f) sequences of notes, while keeping them in the scale, and over a limited number of octaves. I had made it so it could generate between 8 notes and 8192 notes, at my control. I also controlled a sliding window of repetition.

Tears For Ida

I wrote this song after stubbing my baby toe, like, really, really bad...  Guitar, drums, and six synth basses.  The six synth basses reflect the six different forms of throbbing pain I was subjected to - the throbbing from my pulse, the throbbing when walking, the sputtering throbbing whenever I put my foot up, the locomotive-parked-on-my-toe throbbing when I put on a sock, the blood-rush-to-the-feet throbbing whenever I stood up, and finally the wtf random bs that happened whenever I almost forgot about it...  The eye-watering spikes of sharp pain are represented by glitchy drum breaks.

This is the second single / 3rd track (there are interlude tracks) of the upcoming album "Candy Store". It is called "Childhood", in reference to the prominent use of a toy grand piano.

The album is called "Candy Store", as it really digs far and wide in the palette of synthesizers and other sound generating instruments.

Each track combines a more "traditional" instrument, with many synthesizers. In this case, the melody is played on a toy piano, while the rest of the arrangement is done using vintage synthesizers, such as the Roland Super JX 10, a 24 oscillator monster synthesizer, a Sequential Circuits Prophet VS, a Roland TB-303 bass synthesizer (clone), a Korg Minikorg and a few other vintage gear, including some vintage drum machines.

An in between song intermission, Interlude 3 is based on the sheet music of Stardust.

It is arranged and recorded as if it had been recorded before World War II, in the 1930s, using a Hammond organ, a Hammond Novachord synthesizer (yes, a prewar synth), a pair of rotating speakers, direct mixing to reel to reel tape. And for that real vintage sound, vinyl playback.

Interlude 3

Canadian Polyglot and polymath living in North Carolina, Francois is Head of Dion Research by day, & artist, maker of instruments & effects, musician, photographer & sound engineer by night.

His interest in music started at a very young age when he studied classical piano and electronics, both of these things would be quite influential on his future work.

He started composing electronic music as a kid in the early 80s and experimenting with sampling on an Apple //e, and would later use the Amiga, Apple IIgs and on the PC, the Gravis Ultrasound wavetable soundcard, and would publish soundbanks for it. Today, most of his music is done without computers, on modular synths and effects built by him, along with some commercial synths and effects.

From 1988 to 1997, he hosted a show on electronic music from its beginning in the early 20th century all the way to modern electronica, and the history of it and the technology that enabled it. He also did a stint at the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation and Videoway / Videotron in Montreal.

In parallel with that, he would continue releasing music through various media, including digital media before MP3 files (through MP2 and ADPCM WAV files on Hyperreal, IUMA etc). In those 30 years to now, he has produced an average of ~1 album (EP or full) a year
