Throughout the last couple of years, Medellín, Colombia's second largest city, has slowly been emerging a unique handful of producers shaped by the city's mystic mountains. Born and raised in the middle of one of the world's most renowned hostile environments, these sonic hustlers have found the perfect ingredients to cook some of the most solid and intriguing electronic music in the current South American landscape.

This can clearly be proved in Medellín Rave Society, the fourth assault from Colombian label Insurgentes. On its first VA EP, Verraco and Defuse gathers some of the city's most defiant artists, for an open techno letter directly delivered from the Aburrá Valley. A-side is pure sci-fi from the mountain, with local heavyweight Merino's "Ode To You" leading you deep in a forest where hissing hi-hats, broken beats and warmful chords give life to a vivid soundscape; while Black Propaganda's "I'm My Biggest Enemy" doesn't hesitate in creating a feeling of altered consciousness, where modular electric shocks throw yourself in an inner machine state of mind. 

On the other hand, B-side offers straight redemption. The Baker's aka Astronomical Telegram "Of Gold And Bitter Bread" brings back the serenity, with sharp textures that slowly rebuild the lost spirit, allowing label head Verraco to open the celestial gate with "Entry Of The Gods Into Aburrá", a raw IDM breakbeat piece that heals the wounds of a beaten city and marks the beginning of a new chapter in colombian electronic music scene.

Medellín sonic insurgency at it's best.

PREMIERE : Merino - Ode To You

‘Rise And Shine’, the first full Ostgut Ton solo release by Substance (aka @Peter-Kuschnereit), sees him fusing his deep, industrial aesthetic with the resonant bass-heavy leanings of his alter ego DJ Pete, as evidenced on the title track’s off-kilter metallic riddims and multiple, interlaced SH-101 and Prophet 5 melodies. From there, potential set-closer “Countdown” blasts off with relentlessly rattling, scraping breaks, hissing German vox and big chords. The compact explorations of “Bird Cave” and “Distance” offer a more atmospheric take on bass and rhythm, while EP closer “Cruising” re-explores the uncanny, Berlin deep techno cosmos Kuschnereit has helped define, this time in denser form.
