ALMOST ANYTHING

As I’m lying here in bed, thoughts of you roll though my head, and sweet music fills my mind.  I let my feelings go, and the teardrops start to flow, with my heartbeat keeping time.   On the nightstand there’s a pen so I’m writing once again, and the words all seem to rhyme.

Words inspired by you and God’s sweet spirit too.

I’d do anything to just forget about you. Almost anything, but what am I supposed to do?
Because when I pray He says hold on with a voice that’s sweet and strong.
So here I go again…

When the band was formed and played the first tracks I’d cut and laid, it really sounded strange.  But my mind was so distraught by the havoc love had wrought; it was all I could arrange. Then a lawyer heard us roast, sent a demo to the coast, and some big boys heard me sing. They were curious about the girl who’d confined me to this world; guess they liked my broken wings.

Heavy offers were made. The biggest was for millions, all prepaid.

Except assault you with small talk, fast food, booze, bars or punch a clock; like all those other men.

As this life keeps flying by, I still think of you and sigh, as I board another plane.
My producer’s booked a show, it’s in Europe wouldn’t you know.  Seems they like this stuff in Spain. At the airports now there’s crowds, I prefer it in the clouds where the world is just a view. There’s reporters on the ground, every time they come around, they ask questions about you.

But they never get far: I won’t tell them who you are.

Almost Anything

This is a "live" performance, done in a small, empty auditorium. Just five guys cookin'.  I had an 8 channel Mackie and mic'd everyone up.  No one had heard the song previously. I played it through on an acoustic guitar. Then we practiced it several times - about an hour's worth. Right before we had to leave I took up my strat and hit record.  We took two takes - one of them was so hot I actually put it on the "Vast Affection" CD.

I sent some sad songs shopping for a record deal to tinsel town U.S.A.
As most souls pass when confronted with class, I knew I’d probably have to hustle and pray. 

A ringing phone meant I wasn't alone as the distance disappeared with a sigh.
The voice at the end said, “Your songs have found a friend. There’s heart here a label might buy.”

Then she said the sweetest something, “I love ya’ babe, but promise one thing...
Don’t stay here or you’ll end up stuck here, they’ll call it art if it turns a buck here.  
                                                                                                                                          
“So keep your cool and count your fortune, but leave behind a lover’s portion as you travel to the stars. 
Some wonder why fool’s gold gets struck here but blessings count for less than luck here...
This freeway’s jammed with foolish plans as well as fancy cars.”

I just talked to an angel on the phone, and I can’t keep from wonderingwhere an angel makes its home.
You know, I’ve never seen an angel - but I’ve held a heavenly hand.
And I’m bound to play L.A., by the way... I’m just not sure when we land…

Angel in L.A

A "Ruby Tuesday" style ballad.  The only way to say goodbye to someone you truly love. :)  Headphones please... my songs are very lyric/story driven.  

Almost forgot to mention - there's a "hidden track at the end entitled "My Heart Sings For You".  Goodbye, Goodbye was the last cut on my first CD - "Farewell".  There was a hidden track, which was slid in behind it.  Just a (hopefully) touching little song that was an extra "present".

TrueDirty blues/jazz fusion in this raucous tale of bar life - American style. True story. Ah... only in America.   BTW - that's a 200 year old French stand-up bass you're hearing!  Nice.....

Paganville

"Tony Bennett on steroids"  - need I say more?  Oh, one of Prince's original "hothead" horn section players blew on this!  One take - nice...... :)  One more notable mention: that's a 200 yr old French stand-up bass there - affectionately nicknamed "the Titanic" by moi. 

Castles & Kings

Wrote this in '95 after reading a blurb about a rocket attack in Kabul that struck a western mall. The article said that the Premier (at the time) was surprised! Wanted to write a "Muslim-attitude" song, but didn't want to get jihaaded so I did the obvious - couched it in a love song. :)  Enough attitude for ya?  I know, it's rather prophetic in hindsight, particularly the chorus - "Afghanistan, it wasn't in our plans".   BTW: world-class guitar player and friend Dean Magraw had a custom made electric sitar that he hadn't found a use for since he bought it - so this was it's first appearance in public!  It was MADE for this song. lol
