Story
Faust; The Man Who Wanted to Know Everything
Prologue in Heaven
God and Mephistopheles, the devil, debate human nature. Mephistopheles claims he can corrupt the noblest of men: Heinrich Faustus, a dissatisfied sage. God accepts the challenge, trusting that Faustus will seek goodness even in the face of temptation.
The Dark Pact.
Faust, frustrated by the limits of academic and religious knowledge, summons magical powers. Mephistopheles appears and offers him a pact: servitude on Earth in exchange for his soul in the afterlife. Faustus accepts, adding a clause: if he is ever fully satisfied, his soul will belong to the devil.
Love and Perdition.
Faust is rejuvenated with a magic potion and falls in love with Margaret (Gretchen), an innocent young woman. Their love turns into tragedy: Margaret is seduced, her mother dies from a potion, her brother dies in a duel, and she, in desperation, kills her illegitimate son. She is imprisoned and sentenced to death. Faustus tries to save her, but she refuses to escape, seeking divine redemption.
Beyond the Soul.
The second part moves away from the intimate drama and becomes a philosophical epic. Faustus becomes involved in politics, economics, and world-building. He seeks to found a utopia, but his ambition drives him to commit dark deeds. In the end, he dies without having uttered the sentence that would seal his doom. Angels rescue his soul, for his constant struggle for good redeems him.
