Rain Cycle explores the sounds of Los Angeles in Spring: the lingering of cool air under sterling sunshine, the heavy thrum of cloud cover, the gusts of wind presaging a storm, the joyous release of a downpour, sunlight breaking through the thunderheads; and finally, the calming of elements when we are returned to Spring. Rain Cycle features the voices of seven L.A. Choral Lab singers, including soloists Marisa Esposito (Cloud Cover) and Frank Hobbs (Rainfall).

Rain Cycle is a choral suite composed by Divya Maus for the L.A. Choral Lab. It premiered on April 11, 2021 as part of the L.A. Choral Lab's "SOUNDWALK: An Auditory Safari" in Griffith Park.

Retorno al Nido (Retorn al Niu) es un documental sonoro realizado durante la primavera de 2022 con grabaciones de paisajes y cantos de aves en la región de la Vall d'Albaida (Aielo de Malferit, L'Olleria). La pieza combina la presencia de los cantos de los pájaros con las oralidades de vecinos de la zona en relación a su lucha por la preservación del paraje natural. Conceptos como el ritmo, la melodía, la armonía, la textura y el silencio se entremezclan para valorar hasta qué punto la actividad del ser humano (la antropofonía u otras fuentes vibracionales no audibles) afecta a los entornos naturales. Retorno al nido reflexiona sobre el actual conflicto de la instalación masiva de macro-plantas fotovoltaicas en la Comunidad Valenciana, que en estos momentos está gestionando más de 300 proyectos en zonas rurales. SEO/BirdLife defiende desde 1993 unas `Renovables responsables´ concebidas para provocar el máximo beneficio a las comunidades locales y el mínimo impacto ambiental. 

La pieza homenajea además el paciente y apasionado oficio de la ornitología y la grabación de campo, especialmente con la compañía de Eloïsa Matheu, muy probablemente la primera mujer biólóga en comenzar a grabar paisajes sonoros en España. Suele ocurrir que escuchamos los cantos de las aves pero no alcanzamos a verlas o distinguirlas, es en sí la escucha acusmática de cada día. Una invitación para detenerse en la escucha y volver al nido ancestral: “El susurro de cada hoja y de cada criatura nos implora que cuidemos el mundo vivo que nos rodea; un mundo que, de hecho, puede que contenga secretos de amor por todo lo que existe, en particular por nuestra humanidad. Esta música divina se está atenuando a un ritmo acelerado. Se acerca la hora en la que tendremos que declarar como testigos cuando los espíritus de las criaturas vuelvan para la cacería final” (Bernard Krause).

Esta pieza sonora está en castellano, mi lengua materna, pero también hay testimonios orales en valenciano y en catalán (también lenguas maternas ya que nací en Valencia). La pieza trata de cuidar la riqueza de la variedad lingüística de la península ibérica, donde una misma palabra puede mutar mucho entre pueblos y regiones, aunque estos territorios estén muy próximos entre sí. Esta confluencia entre fronteras y lenguajes, tanto entre humanos como entre otros seres vivos - en este caso hablamos de aves- es una constante en mi exploración con el trabajo sonoro. Wapato Island Farm - A soundwalk on Sauvie Island by Gerardo Calderon

"If you can't find a photograph within ten yards of where you are, you're not looking hard enough". Paul Haley has been a professional photographer all his working life. As the youngest ever Senior Photographer at Soldier magazine he was posted to the South Atlantic to document the Falklands War of 1982. He recorded more than 2000 images, now conserved in the collection of the Imperial War Museum, London. The museum's Head of Photographs, Helen Mavin, included some of Paul's photographs in the recently published book War Photographers (ISBN 978-1-912423-66-8).
In this Radio Walk, Paul Haley guided Jonathan Kempster around his windswept and rainy hometown of Morley, Leeds, demonstrating that there is an inspiring image to be found around every corner.

Paul's life story was recorded by the IWM's oral history unit and is conserved in the museum's sound collection under catalogue number 37195.

Radio Walks Podcast - Interview with Paul Haley

Produced by Land Art in Skåne, with thanks to our workshop participants for their reflections. Underwater recordings made during our workshops, using hydrophones handmade by Jez Riley French in the UK. This initiative is part of the Bauhaus the Seas Sails project and funded by the European Union.

Join indefatigable octogenarian walker and talker, landscape historian and naturalist Dennis Furnell as he guides Jonathan Kempster to the summit of Ivinghoe Beacon, Buckinghamshire, the site of an Iron Age hillfort now under the care of the National Trust. Witness the changes in the physical and aural landscape that have occurred during the past 3000 years.

Travelling to different places introduces us to new exotic soundscapes often dominated by pulsing rhythmic and static musical patterns. Frogland explores night-time field recordings from Florida and Brisbane which are dominated by crickets and frogs. A variety of sound design tools have been used to create this work such as spectral analysis and transformation and granular processing. 
I would like to thank composer Rick Nance for allowing me to use some of his Frog recordings for this piece. 
I was also inspired by Francis Dhomont’s fantastic work Signé Dionysos 1983-91 while writing this piece and I had a wonderful conversation with him about this work at the KLANG! Festival, June 2019 in Montpellier.

Commissioned by the University of Greenwich in partnership with L-ISA Immersive Sound Art to create a new work for their Ocean Surround Sound system in Highgate, London. 
This project was funded by the Higher Education Innovation Fund and I had the opportunity to works alongside project director Dr. Andrew Knight-Hill (University of Greenwich) and Paula Fairfield (Sound Designer for Game of Thrones). I would also like to thank Dr. Andrew Hill for organising this project.
Frogland is also an exploration of ambisonic workflow and working in Higher Order Ambisonics. Composed at EMS studios, Stockholm in September 2019.
