Benxoai chants in which healing occurs through a direct struggle against dark forces. The medicinal doctor, a strong Shipibo woman, sings and smokes a pipe; there’s fire, there are stars, while a Shipibo patient is being healed. In order to maintain poetry and metaphors, nothing’s literal: there is no voice-over explaining anything in Meraya, but rather images and music speaking for themselves.

Panati, a chant of defense, is sung as the morning progresses- roots, the forest from within, and water. This is also a metaphor of how humans reach out for connection just like nature through its communication networks; the earth’s profoundness is at the same time the profundity of the sky, which relate to the depths of human experience.

Fred Clarke Alvarez (Peru) multi-instrumentalist, music producer, researcher of Andean-Amazonian musical instruments and its relation with shamanic practices and traditions. He has published albums such as Paqarina: Healing Sound of Peru, Ambient 1, Sounds of Nasca, Sound of Pucllana, Meraya Soundtrack, and has participated in collaborations with other music artists. In 2017, he published Sounds of Nasca, a production for the Museum of Art of Lima and Rietberg Museum of Zürich using original instruments (dating back to 200 B.C. – 650 D.C.) for the international exhibition NASCA-MALI.
