Here is a recording of my two-hour morning set at NYE, Ankali & Planeta Za.

A gig that will forever be in my heart, thanks to the love that was, especially in the last 30 minutes, palpable and overwhelming. 

While choosing tracks, I let myself go to many corners, always focusing on a specific feeling that a fresh morning on the 1st day of a new year evoked in me – warm, energizing, ethereal, hopeful, promising. That is what we were going for, and what we've achieved on the dancefloor. 

Many many thanks to the @ankali fam for letting me be a part of this night. 

And thanks to all the beautiful souls who danced with me, shared smiles and kind words – I hope this recording finds you well <3

About the DJ:

Producer for ages, collecting records for the last few years, but very new to the DJ scene, despite hanging on to it in Montreal for a while. Finally built up the crates (and the courage) to start putting some of my ideas together for the floor.

About the mix:
I wanted this mix to sound very casual — like just hanging out in my room on a random evening. There are definitely a few heavy moments and more than a handful of mistakes — but overall I’m really pleased the outcome captured this sort of raw, flowing energy I always attempt to bring to sets. Of course in a mix designed for headphones the selection is always going to be different — drastically pivoting in the middle of mix from the more modern stuff all the way back to 80s house / boogie is another thing that works better here than it would on a floor. Like to think I pulled it off reasonably well in any case tho 😛 

Early house / late disco culture has actually become something of an obsession for me over the last little while. Listening to the work of early dub mixing masters — Walter Gibbons, Arthur Russell, Shep Pettiibone and later Paul Simpson, Winston Jones. They were able to do so so much with such little input and very primitive tools! Just magical because you can see the sprouts of the music we know and love budding within the opulence and excess of disco. It just took the right pair of ears to strip the sound back to what’s needed and bring the grooves to the surface.

On a more heavy note, looking back to this era has also helped me find some partial answers to the ever pressing question: is it okay to find solace on a dance floor in times like these?  Now more than ever, with the ongoing genocide in Palestine and Lebanon, the (continued) rise of fascism, our acceleration of the ongoing climate disaster —  the list goes on. It’s hard not to draw parallels to the atmosphere of the early/mid 80s —  the spectre of Vietnam still looming, the AIDS crisis in full swing, the failed war on drugs upending millions of lives. Amidst all this death and destruction the early pioneers of house and techno were able to build such a beautifully queer, forward thinking culture that provided community to many who desperately needed it during that time. 

It’s easy to write partying off as hedonistic escapism — and of course there’s a degree of selfishness involved — but to me it’s always been more than that. These healing spaces we create through music, communities based on acceptance and celebration of the weirdos and outcasts, I really believe have the power to bond people together like nothing else. Dancing, synchronization of movements on a primal level, often hypothesized to be valued by early humans for its ability to meld individuals into one unit, still has this magical, transformative power. Magic feels so rare in our ruthlessly pragmatic modern age. If the rest of the world is spiralling towards uncertain peril —  then this is one way we can push back against the senseless use of capital and talent to enact only more violence and destruction — by using the little agency we do have to amplify this magic and renew the souls of those we love.
