I didn't understand it at the time. I fail to achieve any degree of understanding in the ensuing years, which are three in number. I presume Herb means that inherently you cannot be commercial and artistic. You cannot be commercial and quality. You cannot be commercial concurrent with have a preoccupation with the level of storytelling that you want to achieve. And this I have to reject. I don't think calling something commercial tags it with a kind of an odious suggestion that it stinks, that it's something raunchy to be ashamed of. I don't think if you say commercial means to be publicly acceptable, what's wrong with that?
As long as you are not ashamed of anything you write if you're a writer, as long as you're not ashamed of anything you perform if you're an actor, and I'm not ashamed of anything.
This is the area I know. But I think innate in what Herb says is the suggestion made by many people that you can't have public acceptance and still be artistic. And, as I said, I have to reject that.

As a kid growing up in Illinois' tucked-away capital of Springfield, Justin Cudmore played the drums at home and in school as a jazz percussionist. In his college days Justin dove into electronic music, workshopping new-wave influenced beats in bands and DJing parties. Currently, Justin is a fixture across Brooklyn, popping up on dance floors and behind booths, where he has spun records at his Hotmix parties along with Mike Servito and Gunnar Haslam. 

“Crystal” is Cudmore’s debut 12” single. Raw, rough and ready to rumble, “Crystal” marries snaking acid lines and bouncy grooves to a sample from cult underground film classic 'The Queen'.  On the flip is Detroit-bred and Bunker resident DJ Mike Servito’s “730 Reshape”, that gives the wiggly worm vibe harkening back to the early days of Transmat, Warp and the minimalism of Dan Bell's DBX project. L.I.E.S. mainstay Gunnar Haslam provides his “Dekalb Avenue Remix” made while living in New York, a modular synth cruise with the top down. All tracks have been mastered and EQed for vinyl by George Horn at Fantasy Studios in Berkeley and labels are as pink as Crystal’s lipstick.

Sometimes the sweetest things in life happen like little miracles. Back in 2017, when Keith Thompson and Rocco Rodamaal met at a party on the Hudson in New York (where Rocco was playing), both were far to imagine this encounter would shape up the beautiful project that is presented to you today. With the idea of celebrating the 30th birthday of his house classic "Break 4 Love" (as the lead vocalist of Raze), Keith felt that a collaboration with the respected long-running French producer would be spot on. Having freshly launched his own Memories imprint with the successful "Someday", Rocco suggested to record a completely new reinterpretation with Keith (instead of simply remixing it) and to release it himself.

With 2.5 million units sold worldwide and a "stone cold" classic status, the track looked like a ballsy move to re-approach artistically. Strong of his 20 years DJ and production career with key releases and remixes on labels such as Defected, Freerange, Classic, Atjazz Record Company and Buzzin Fly, Rocco's goal was to deliver a completely contemporary version with Keith's freshly new recorded vocals without betraying the timeless feel and original spirit of “Break 4 Love”. With friendship and loyalty being high in his book, Rocco wanted to share the experience with his friends and give the project a high dose of musicality in order to consolidate a strong message to the new listeners' generation. This is how this "All-Stars Team" developed naturally around the project. Alex Finkin, the musical director of Aloe Blacc, amazing multi-instrumentalist and man of many talents, co-produced and co-wrote the "new" “Break 4 Love” with Rocco in Paris while deep house Jedi Master Atjazz engineered the final mixdown in his studio in Derby. Being the prolific remixer & a man of spotless taste that we all know, Atjazz delivered his own splendid rendition of Rocco and Alex's new recording, excited by using the velvet voice of Keith printed in the house music history.

Dawn Diaries is inspired by the belief that the best way to start every day is with a celebration of the sun that shines through the darkness, our bodies that feel the warmth and the music that moves us. How we wake sets the tone for our day and how we live each day sets the tone for our lives.

To start our days in celebration with music and dancing has the power to transform us, unlocking the ever-present freedom, love and happiness that can easily be muted by our daily routine. My hope is that Dawn Diaries can be a part of this transformation.

Dawn Diaries are mini-mixes that go great with coffee, morning showers and getting ready for work. Solo or group dancing, bouncing, singing and smiling are all highly encouraged.
