Host Fred Opie Interviews Show Runner Jared Andrukanis. His credits include working for Zero Point Zero Productions on the show Points Unknown with host Anthony Bourdain, which is one of the few food shows I watched. This interview is a must for people who want to enter into the production industry from someone who has worked on Emmy award making shows. The principles of getting in the door and climbing the industry ladder are universal and when it comes to producing it's not about where you went to film school.

Food Rebel Part 3

Dr. Frederick Douglass Opie shares oral histories from Harlem residents about Father Divine. Every Sunday during the Great Depression the controversial New York-based evangelist Father Divine (aka the Reverend General Jealous Divine and aka George Baker) fed starving interracial groups by the hundreds for free in Harlem, while many other black preachers ignored their flocks’ hunger pains. Most African-American urban clergy avoided sermons that addressed racism, poverty, and the social conditions of blacks in America. Instead, their sermons focused on the need for spiritual conversion and life after death. Father Divine talked about conversion, but he also denounced racism and the inability of a country blessed with material abundance to feed its citizens.

Ousmane K Power-Green, The Confessions of Matthew Strong

George Schuyler, founder of the Young Negro Cooperative League, and Ella Baker, assistant of the Young Negro Cooperative League, organized food co-ops and Black-owned and operated grocery stores throughout the U.S. during the Great Depression to aid the Black community in economic independence and food self-sufficiency.

Hacks for Student Athletes

Marcus Garvey's United Negro Improvement Association (UNIA) had more than 700 chapters in 38 states alone in the early 1920s, including hundreds of more chapters throughout the world. The UNIA championed Black nationalism, self-determination, and Black entrepreneurship. Garvey founded the Negro Factories Corporation (NFC) in 1919 and offered stock in it to African Americans as a means to help Black people to achieve economic independence. Among its many activities, the NFC ran grocery stores and restaurants in the early 1920s.

Fannie Lou Hamer is a trailblazing activist who not only fought for civil rights but also championed economic independence. She founded the Freedom Farm Cooperative, which provided food and economic opportunities to Black Mississippians. Enslaved Afro-Brazilian women sold prepared food, like acarajé in the streets of Brazil. Originally a popular West African dish, Afro-Brazilian have continued to sell acarajé long after slavery was abolished in 1888.

Brazilian food has strong African influences due to the importation of enslaved Africans starting and ending in the country. This can be seen in their dishes, like vatapá, a seafood gumbo.

That continued until I became a Division I athlete at Syracuse University. I was a physical education major and therefore exposed to the importance of food, nutrition, and athletic performance. I started making the necessary to get playing time. As my career continued after college so did improvement on my diet. How much better would I have been as a college player if I had eaten better and hydrated with water more often? Today’s Fred Opie show was recorded at the McDonogh School in Owing Mills, Maryland, a suburb of Baltimore.  Coach Andy Hilgartner invited me to come and speak to several groups at the high school. I spoke at FCA huddle, Sankofa (BSU type organization), a history class, and ended with a lunch time Fred Opie Show with the McDonogh  girl’s and boy’s varsity lacrosse teams. Both team are outstanding; the girls have not lost a game in three years, yes you heard right three years! 
Taylor Cummings, Jessy Morgan, and Jeremy Sieverts are outstanding McDonough alum who I’ve interviewed on the show. Today we interview McDonough seniors Julia Cooper a goalie going to Stanford, Maddie Jenner a midfielder headed to Duke, Jack Simmons and midfielder committed to the University Virginia, and Jack Sweeney a midfielder/attack men who will be attending the United States Naval Academy. 4 McDonogh School Senior Girls and Boys Lacrosse Commits

I grew up in New York’s Hudson Valley near the United States military academy at West Point and a steady diet of Hall Famer Dick Edel coached Army lacrosse teams. I had the opportunity to sit down with two of West Points all-time best, goalie José Olivero and defenseman Bob Henry who both grew up on Long Island. Jose earned second-team All-American behind Hopkins Hall of Famer Mike Federico. Bob earned first-team All-American and best defensemen in the nation. Olivero and Henry share stories about their lacrosse journeys, playing for coach Edell, what they admired about each other as teammates, US national team tryouts in 1978 and 1982, how the sport has changed since their days as West Point cadets, great teammates and opponents. A native of Syosset, New York, Brendan Scheck earned All American honors at two positions, attack and midfield and at two schools, Navy and Hopkins. He also played on two U.S. national teams in the 1980s. Many consider Schneck one of the greatest players of all time. He was named to the NCAA's 25th anniversary team in 1985. Food And the African Slave Trade

16 year Kennedy Opie and his Dad Fred Opie have experience with mental health. Kennedy's therapist asked him to interview his father starting with the question what's it like to be an African American man in the United States? Dr. Alvenia Moody Fulton is not well known as a pioneer in the holistic health movement which championed whole grains, unprocessed foods, juicing, and vegetarianism. Interviews newspapers, magazines, autobiographies, and some ethnography are used to tell her story. Dick Gregory learned most of his holistic health expertise from Fulton starting back in the 1960s. Gregory and others I interviewed frequented Fulton’s health food store, restaurant, and herbal pharmacy on Chicago’s South side as well as heard her deliver lectures; one person regularly heard her on her own talk radio program. Alvenia M. Fulton

Brothers James and Robert Paschal opened a restaurant adjacent to the Atlanta University Center (AUC). Atlanta city officials gave Paschal’s a “colored only” Jim Crow restaurant seating designation. However, the restaurants famed fried chicken and other menu items attracted white dinners who made up some seventy percent of its regular customers. The brothers had committed to employ as many AUC college students as they could knowing that many of them needed the money. How I Graduated From College A Year Early, Tyler Patterson and Fred Opie

Today Hempstead is a predominately-lower working class black suburb of New York City. But it had not always been that way. Hempstead had been a diverse but largely white middle and upper class city that thrived on the economic vitality of Mitchell Airforce based started in 1918. The town had a nationally recognized High School for its academic and athletic excellence. The closing of the Mitchell field in 1961 resulted in a gradual economic decline of the city over the next thirty years. This show is a documentary history of Hempstead 1960s-1990s based on the oral history of 4 of the schools legendary student athletes who all played lacrosse in high school and college. The documentary is done in celebration of former Tiger Al Hodish who will be inducted into the Long Island Lacrosse Hall of Fame in January 2019.
