Inspired by the words and ideas of American writer James Baldwin—along with the ethereal vocals of Anohni and the abstract experimental electronics behind Radiohead—Nakhane (Toure) is fondly referred to as the Messiah of South African indie rock. 

An old musical soul in a young body, this extremely gifted Port Elizabeth-born polymath found acclaim with his eclectic 2013 debut, Brave Confusion, telling the sublime story of the emancipation of a young, gay and Xhosa man in 21st century Africa. 

Elsewhere, Nakhane has also made waves as an actor, starring in John Trengove’s multi-award-winning Inxeba (The Wound), a film that lifts the veil on the traditional initiation rituals into manhood practised within Xhosa culture.

This improvisation was recorded for Jan-Willem's sister, who recently became a mother. The music is meant to bring a peaceful, intimate atmosphere. Ideal for any mother (breast)feeding her baby (or father of course!). And of course the baby will become even smarter and emotionally developed when listening to the gentle melodies :)

Lullaby - For mothers and their babies

Bhagsu, a small village in the Indian Himalaya's. Electric atmosphere full of tension because of an approaching thunderstorm. My good friend Ran on didgeridoo, and Ido, who just passed by, on guitar. What an energy! And chrystal clear sound because of my beloved Zoom H2 microphone (dolby surround). 
The first few minutes are like the opening of a conversation, finding each other, adjusting to each other's styles. Then (around 4:00) it really breaks loose :) Enjoy!

Nils Frahm writes his first score for one-take feature film ‘Victoria’ and is nominated for German film prize

Nils Frahm has always said that he’s just waiting for something real special when being asked if he would ever score the music for a film. And that’s exactly what German director Sebastian Schipper presented to him with his one-take feature ‘Victoria’. Filmed in Berlin, Victoria’s plot sees a runaway party girl, who's asked by three friendly men to join them as they hit the town, but their wild night of partying suddenly turns into a bank robbery as the music changes from techno to subdued piano sounds.

For the recording session at Studio P4 in Berlin, Frahm enlisted the help of long-time collaborator and cellist Anne Müller, violist Viktor Orri Árnason and ambient artist Erik K. Skodvin of Deaf Center on guitar.

IN HIS OWN WORDS:

Dear viewer and listener,

I’ve finally written music for a film. It took me some time to do so, as I was patiently waiting for a movie that would truly speak to me. When director Sebastian Schipper invited me to work on Victoria, I knew it was worth the long wait. Does such a strong film even need music? I realised it wouldn’t be easy to create a score that embraces these bold pictures.

Luckily we were given unusual creative freedom by approaching the movie together with Sebastian Schipper, who was keeping the production and direction to one single team. The score was recorded in a special location, the former GDR broadcasting production facilities that today host Studio P4. We simply put a big screen in the middle of the room, filled it with microphones and instruments, set the movie on loop and kept improvising on top of it together – my good friends and I.

The guest musicians started their recording session by playing a cohesive take over the course of the whole movie. This was the most interesting part of the day, since they hadn’t seen the film before. They became spectators and creators at once, intuitively recording hundreds of different cues that way. You are about to listen to some of its highlights. I hope they do Victoria and your ears justice.

‘Music for the Motion Picture Victoria’ will be released by Erased Tapes on LP/CD/Digital June 15th.

‘Victoria’ won the Berlinale Film Festival prize for Best Cinematography and has also received seven nominations including Best Soundtrack for the Deutscher Filmpreis – Germany’s highest movie award, and will be released in cinemas across Germany on June 11th with plans to release it in the UK and other countries soon.

This is a pay what you want / free ambient track that was going to be on the Isonomic EP but I decided to release it early. This one has a lot of emotion in it for me.

Soular Order - Up Ahead

I recorded this piano improvisation during a group-meditation with 39 other people, on 11-11-11 at 11:11 AM. Like so many others that day, we tried to evoke a massive, global wave of positive energy with our combined focus! 
There are so many crises, but people seem to also wake up on a personal level, discovering their own responsability and values. Occupy Your Self! What do You think of all that's happening in the world, and more important: what will Your role be??

30th of december @ Eigentijds Winterfestival
While doing small improvisation-concerts for the participants of the spiritual Eigentijds Winterfestival in Rotterdam, I met River, a Lucid Dreamer with his 'lucid didgeridoo'. After a few minutes of practice we gave two hypnotizing concerts, of which you can hear the first one here. Enjoy and dream away to other realities! For maximum pleasure, listen with good sound or headphones.

This Personal Piano Improvisation was recorded as a gift for Marlies, who is very ill. The intentions and emotions which I hope to have captured in this special piano piece for her are: harmony, tranquillity, children, peace of mind.

A story within a story, Blood Rushing is a glimpse into the world of Blushing, a heteronym of the artist Josephine Foster.  A rock-ballet chanté, the music is set to a Pueblo drum's metapulsing Pan-American heartbeat.

Recorded in Colorado by Andrija Tokic (Alabama Shakes) with the collaboration of her partner Spanish guitarist Victor Herrero, and musicians Paz Lenchantin (The Entrance Band), Heather Trost (A Hawk and a Hacksaw) and Ben Trimble (Fly Golden Eagle).
