The Lab NYC is Mixmag and Smirnoff Sound Collective's weekly afterwork party where we stream the best American and international DJs from the intimate space connected to our Brooklyn office. Mixmag welcomed Brian Cid to The Lab NYC for a deep and ethereal journey through tech house.

For those familiar with the late night and early morning atmospheres of Brooklyn’s underground party scene, Brian Cid is likely a recognizable name. Once the music engineer of choice for artists such as Wiz Khalifa, Mos Def, and Snoop Dogg, Brian then found his true calling in the realm of dance music. After garnering early support from the illustrious Nervous Records in 2012, Cid began to catch the attention of industry tastemakers Richie Hawtin, Pete Tong, Claude Vonstroke, Lee Burridge, and Mark Knight, among others. The Brooklyn native and Cityfox affiliate has been steadily carving out a place for himself in the hypnotic realm of dance music.

Cid currently has plans to release a mini album on his own Extinct label in December while also working on an album for his new collaborative project with Holmar Filipsson of Thugfucker called Theory Of Light. 2017 will also see Brian release an EP on microCastle releasing in February and another EP on Cityfox to follow. With much to look forward to on the horizon, he’s sure to take to The Lab NYC with plenty of new material to share.

Brian Cid - All Originals Set Mixmag The Lab NYC

Henry Saiz delivers a stunning single ‘For Days And Nights’ on his own Natura Sonoris imprint, featuring his live band singer Eloy.
‘For Days and Nights’ showcases Saiz’s affinity with sonic exploration in house music; creating two different tracks using the same vocals using two distinctive approaches. 
‘For Days and Nights (Boiler Room Version)’ was first premiered during Saiz´s killer Boiler Room live show last year and was hugely anticipated ever since. It’s more melancholic, with layers of percussion atop a pulsing bassline and flourishing chords building to a crescendo. A slow burner, this version allows the musical elements more freedom to stray from the vocal top lines.
'For Days and Nights (Dawn version)' is a compelling cut that builds gradually, blending atmospheric synth melodies with Eloy’s ethereal voice on loop. Adding an elegant 90´s dance music touch, the other elements of the track seamlessly enshrine the echoing vocals, which dominate this heady production.
Both tracks include the Spanish producer’s trademark use of ambient sound effects and real life recordings, a passion he never ceases to experiment with, setting him apart from other artists. Not many can keep the wheels turning the way Saiz does, as ´For Days and Nights´ once again demonstrates. 
The release follows his hugely successful Kickstarter campaign that saw the Spanish producer exceed his target and raise almost €74,000 to set off on a musical journey around the world, recording ten tracks in ten iconic locations, including Tokyo, Joshua Tree and Dubai. 
A remix pack including Shall Ocin amongst others is also due in the new year.

Mainz rooted duo Matchy and Bott serve up three dancefloor heaters for their “Battle Boii” EP.
A traveling bassline opens up the eponymous track, while dramatic synth leads slowly unfold into a dreamy, laid back melody. The ascending groove is slow paced yet intricate, constructing a perfect setting for subtle transitions. On the other side of the melodic spectrum, Ocean surprises with a juxtaposition of gloom and wandering indie vocals. Playful harmonic keys alternate dark synths, forming a looming, ever-approaching backdrop that’s a perfect tension builder. Enrolled for the remix, Lars Moston injects more bass into Ocean’s already high-strung framework. Distorting the original vocals and pairing them with equally contorted synths, the track comes as a powerful floor mover that’s equally dancy as the original.

I'm excited to announce the first track from the 'Emergence Remixed' album which will be released in full at the end of March.

This remix comes from one of my absolute favourite electronic producers of the last few years, and someone who is constantly surprising me with each new release - Rival Consoles. 

I've been playing his work in my sets a lot recently too, he's got a great humanised approach to making electronic music, primarily with his hands-on analogue machines and live percussion, which give his tracks a whole load more life than most other producers. 

I have to mention Rival Consoles synth work too, which for me, is the best out there by a mile. He's got a knack for the most beautiful timbral quality and soft full sound. Complemented with his ability for hooks and chords and always developing arrangements, makes for some of the best electronic music out there in my opinion.

So all that said, you can see why I said I was excited to have him involved in the remix package! He's made a brewing club track for this package, all about those beautiful synths and micropitch deviations for me, the quality oozes out with him needing to overcomplicate the mix (like I do!). It's really hard to get each element to such quality to carry a track like that....so hats off from me, and I hope you enjoy it too.

The artwork is by Andy Lomas, from his Aggregation series, where he created a simulation of sticky particles which bounce around and are more likely to stick to larger structures, causing biological-esc growth-like structures to emerge. I have one of his huge prints from this series on my wall, the detail at high res is amazing. 

The series was chose for the Emergence album packages as it demonstrates the same principles of mathematical rules yielding unexpected and beautiful outcomes as is shown in the visual story to which the album tracks were scored. Lots of those videos are on this youtube channel, and the whole thing will be released in surround-sound bluray format later this year.
