Under the spell of one of the most empowering evenings of exchange of music and habibtiness, I recorded this mix out of a melancholic mood that took me back to songs that used to occupy the lebanese TV and radio rotation for months. I dearly thank ArtAsyl for hosting me as one of their many amazing and inspiring guests and I truly appologize for being very late with delivering this mix. Special thanks to the present questions crew. I love you <3

Tom Wieland (7 Samurai, free soul inc.) digs a lil deeper: 
black forrest´s SABA records ,Ernst Joachim Berendt,World Jazz, Sound Voyage & beyond.

During the 1960´s German Jazz Pope ,journalist,writer  & producer Ernst Joachim Bernendt stepped across the Jazz border to extend german and european post bop jazz. A festival series in Berlin and nowadays highly in demand vinyl LP releases under the "Jazz meets the world" series name on the mythical black forrest label SABA records marked the arrival of "proto" world music . Japan, Tunesia, Bali, Spain, Brazil, Africa,Switzerland went Jazz ala Kraut.
Pioneer  and " testing ground" for Berendt was german Jazz Trombonist Albert Mangesdorff who went  in  1964 on tour to Asia, and recorded after that his landmark modal album " Now Jazz Ramwong" based on Asian folk songs . 
Searching for new sounds arround  the world (and working together with  musicians from all arround  the globe) almost became a mantra for the more open minded german musicians in the following decades  from Kraut Rock & to New Wave  and this is what my ( & Niko Schabels of Radio Citizen) new project SOUND VOYAGE is all about.

So what happened to Berendt? In the late 80´s  he donated his heavy weight jazz collection to the  Jazz Institute Darmstadt and relocated to the island of Gomera where he went esoteric and became one of the most prolific writers of the scene with his book " Nada Brama - the world is sound". He tragically died on the way to a new book presentation in Feb. 2000 in Hamburg in a traffic tram  accident crossing a red light.

The first-ever dedicated album release by pioneering female Italian film music composer/arranger/multi-instrumentalist Giulia De Muittis (aka Mrs. Alessandro Alessandroni). Rare undercover pseudo-ethnological studio sessions made under her experimental alter ego Kema (The Pawnshop/Abnormal Sensations) combining the ethos of Can’s Ethnological Forgery Series (EFS) with the studio trickery of Delia Derbyshire and unshakable credentials as one of the founding figures of Giallo film music and Italian psych soundtracks.

Perhaps best known amongst fans of Italian production music and Giallo movie soundtracks as the wife of the legendary Alessandro Alessandroni, composer, vocalist and multi-instrumentalist Giulia De Muittis was an equally formidable force who emerged from the formative years of the aforementioned anti-genres and rose to a monarchic status within the country’s vibrant, and seldom rivalled musical secret society. The cliché “behind every successful man, there is a strong woman” might not do Alessandro and Giulia’s long-running creative unison justice but one thing that rings true that in the shadows of Senor Alessandroni’s limelight (illuminated by his work with Ennio Morricone for the films of Sergio Leone and Dario Argento) remained a darker musical feminine force which in time has come to represent the duo’s finest and most sought after sonic artifacts. In a career that spanned four decades until her untimely death in 1984 Giulia’s collaborative work as a reliable creative all-rounder and pop polymath has stood the unshakable test of time like few other musicians resulting in projects like The Pawnshop, Femina Ridens, Revolver, Questo Sporco Mondo Meraviglioso, The Night Evelyn Came Out Of The Tomb, Angoscia, Inchiesta Giudiziaria and Witchcraft ‘70 (Angeli bianchi Angeli neri) earning increasing “Most Wanted” status on the collectors’ market. It is of no coincidence that Giulia’s nom de plumes, Kema and De Muittis, have in recent, more educated years, become trusted seals of approval which connect top choice composers such as Raskovich (aka Sorgini), Stelvio Cipriani, Morricone, Braen (aka Alessandroni) Amedeo Tomassi, Piero Umiliani and Bruno Nicolai amongst select others. It is, however, De Muittis’ seldom heard self-initiated solo work for small independent Italian library music imprints that reveal a unique multi-instrumentalist female composer working at her most intimate and uncompromised best.

'Ihunke' has been released on CD only in 2001 in Japan and is now available on vinyl for the first time, finally!

Umeko Ando (1932-2004) was a folk singer from Japan. She was a representative of the Ainu culture on the Hokkaido Island in the north of Japan.

After over a hundred years of forced assimilation and discriminatory policies, in 2008, the Japanese government finally recognized Ainu as an indigenous people of Japan. These policies eroded the identity and sense of worth of Ainu people, confiscated their homelands, and caused considerable suffering over several generations. Unfortunately, oppression and assimilation in Japan's
recent history was catastrophic to the ethnic preservation of the Ainu, and their culture suffered extremely as a result. Finding artefacts of Ainu music is rare in the first place, but Ando did quite a lot throughout her life to preserve it. This record is an example of how their music has been passed on through generations in the oppressed, underground Ainu communities. It deserves a huge audience.

"This year in end of August, our acoustic band Hochzeitskapelle was invited to be part of the ‚Alien Parade Japan‘ touring through Japan. The bands were the Tenniscoats and Kama Aina (who also organized this incredible tour), Zayaendo, popo and Mitamurakandadan in different constellations. This mix is a memory of this wonderful time, with music from these bands, related bands, friends and from records, I bought on this tour…all music from the endlessly creative and inspiring Japanese indie music scene. Arigatou!"
