🩺 Food protein-induced enterocolitis syndrome (FPIES) is a non–IgE mediated #FoodAllergy that manifests with projectile #vomiting, diarrhea, mucus/ #BloodInStool and may be accompanied by lethargy, dehydration, shock, #Malabsorption, #FailureToThrive, and other secondary symptoms.⁣

🤱🏿Through breastmilk, FPIES reactivity to protein fragments from the maternal diet can elicit similar, albeit often less severe, symptoms. ⁣

🦠This can be mistaken for #reflux, stomach bugs, lactose intolerance, infection, and much more.⁣

🤓 "FPIES is NOT rare, with the cumulative incidence of FPIES in infants estimated to be 0.015% to 0.7%, whereas the population prevalence in the US infants was 0.51%."

😭 Diagnosis is based on the recognition of symptoms because there are no biomarkers of FPIES and #AllergyTests will typically show negative for triggers.⁣

🧀 Management relies on avoidance of food triggers, treatment of accidental exposures, and periodic re-evaluations with #OralFoodChallenges to monitor for resolution.⁣

🌽 Any food can be an FPIES trigger which can make navigation harder. ⁣

🙅🏻‍♀️ Not having a specific symptom (like not experiencing failure to thrive or never getting to a full shock response) does NOT rule out FPIES.⁣
