Inspired by the wonderful series "Cosmos" by Carl Sagan, Ann Druyan and Steven Soter from 1978-1979, I am trying to dedicate a piece of music to every single episode of the 13-part series; partly based on the theme tune by Vangelis, but also my own ideas. I hope you have fun with it...
Carl Sagan opens the program with a description of the cosmos and a "Ship of the Imagination" (shaped like a dandelion seed). The ship journeys through the universe's hundred billion galaxies, the Local Group, the Andromeda Galaxy, the Milky Way, the Orion Nebula, our Solar System, and finally the planet Earth. Eratosthenes' successful calculation of the circumference of Earth leads to a description of the ancient Library of Alexandria. Finally, the "Ages of Science" are described, before pulling back to the full span of the Cosmic Calendar. Note: the revised version of the series adds an introduction by Ann Druyan to this episode, recorded after Sagan's death, in which she discusses some of the changes that occurred in the years after its broadcast.

Graeme says.....This started off as a vaguely pleasant but unremarkable little instrumental demo which I'd filed away wondering what, if anything could be done to bring it up to scratch....... Luckily, along came Gina who breathed some new life into it and it ended up becoming this chilled out little pop song....
Gina says....This song is a ramble about life going off into other directions than you had originally planned and then finding that you need to re-start with that original plan because the side-track ended up a dead end.....

Dawn is a sweeping cinematic score based on the first book of the Lilith’s Brood trilogy by the legendary Octavia E. Butler. This album serves as my musical interpretation of her profound and haunting tale—one of loss, survival, and evolution.

The story follows Lilith Iyapo, who once lived peacefully with her family in the Andes Mountains—until a devastating nuclear war obliterated humanity. Centuries later, Lilith awakens aboard a mysterious alien vessel, under the watch of the Oankali—an advanced species driven by an instinct to heal and evolve through genetic merging. As the last remnants of humanity are studied and prepared for a second chance at life, not all agree with the terms of this new beginning.

With themes of love, sadness, hope, and conflict, the music in Dawn is meant to transport the listener—whether or not they’re familiar with the book. You’ll feel the quiet sorrow of a ruined Earth… the awe and unease of first contact… the strange, electric connection between Lilith and the Oankali being Nikanj… and the tension of a species on the brink of transformation.
