Welcome to Eckhardt And The House 2018: New Year, New Sound.

Over the last years, Eckhardt And The House treated the listener to eight singles and an album release full of laid-back, easy listening, trendy nerdy and surprisingly accessible hipster sounds. Now it's time for something new. A new logo, a different style of artwork and most of all, a change of sound. But all that with keeping the existing Eckhardt And The House fan in mind.

Eckhardt And The House has developed towards a more uptempo and danceable indie sound but certainly didn’t lose any charm. The band has been taking elements from pop to avant-garde to funk and twisted it all up into a signature sound with wild experimentation and disregard for the norm. First single If You Cannot Talk is a fine example, a tale of a young girl on a long distance bus ride set to music which reminds us of Talking Heads glory days on the one hand and nowadays Modest Mouse on the other.

All previous Eckhardt And The House singles did very well on Dutch radio and were played for months on national, regional and local stations. They also got airplay on national radiostations in Belgium, Switzerland, Italy plus regional and local stations in Germany and France. Press coverage rolled in from Denmark to Japan and from the United States to Australia. Several singles reached iTunes- and Spotify Viral Charts in The Netherlands, Italy, France and Turkey, on Spotify the total number of Eckhardt And The House plays is well over 1.2 million.  

Eckhardt And The House is the project by producer, singer, multi-instrumentalist, dramatist and actor Rik Elstgeest. Rik is known from his previous bands Kopna Kopna and Alamo Race Track, as well as being composer and producer for Zazi. Together with Gerry Arling (of Arling & Cameron fame) and Bo Koek he is the core of Dutch electropop surprise Mass Electric.

Eckhardt And The House - If You Cannot Talk

This song is about that person who’s deeply broken and desperate for love. The guy who’s manipulating someone to come be with him, but only when it’s most convenient. The words “Jigoku Tengoku” mean “hell or heaven” in Japanese. It’s a pretty lie he’s telling his lover, saying he’ll follow them to the depths of hell or heaven, that “this time’s different,” but those are just empty words.
 
We went through a lot of versions of this song, changing the tempo, should it be swung or un-swung, how should we ground the chords in the verses and what should that final synth sound like? We found solace after listening to artists like Leon Vynehall, Jamie xx, and Empress Of and thinking about how to use synths to support the groove rather than just reiterate the chord progression. We spent a long time on the synth that comes out at the end, automating the envelope and adjusting timing…for us, that had to be the biggest surprise the song had to offer.

Brighton, UK collective LOYAL have always injected a dose of disco into their production, but on their new single "Crave It Still" they embrace the classic style more than ever and add a splash of soul. The track leans into 1970s New York disco with a funky bass-line, syncopated guitar rhythms, glassy keys, cascading string stabs, and soaring anthemic vocals. Throughout their discography LOYAL have gradually exchanged standard house structures and digital-heavy production for organic instrumentation and groove, their deftly layered compositions nodding at genres like R&B, indie rock, pop, and funk along the way. "Crave It Still" marks LOYAL's arrival at a fully realized retro style, but glimpses their earlier house records as it culminates with blipping synths and a thumpy kick.

LOYAL say of the song, "Lyrically, 'Crave It Still' started as a poem, a stream of consciousness about craving nothing in particular; maybe a lost love, a drug, a partner you shouldn't be with but can't help going back to. We held the poem in our back-pocket for a while, then eventually fashioned the New York disco sound while we were on our first-ever writing trip to the city itself. We recorded in a beautiful studio tucked away in an industrial park in Greenpoint, Brooklyn, alongside some fantastic local writers and musicians. They laid out a killer foundation, all New York, and we built from there." 

"Crave It Still" is the third single off LOYAL's forthcoming EP, following the ambient, Fleetwood Mac-inspired "Patterns That Fall" and "Everything (She)," a disco-house / pop-funk hybrid that glimmers with fresh energy and a hint of nostalgia. 

James Day, Laurence Allen, and Alex Cowan formed LOYAL in 2016, springing to life with the critically lauded debut single "Blue & The Green" (released via London label GOOD YEARS - the folks behind BANKS, Lil Silva, and Yellow Days). They first started expanding their line up with "House For You," when they teamed up with local Brighton artist Beth Molly Moore. The collaborative experiment was a success and eventually led the project to function as a collective with seven members.

In 2010, David told Interview‘s Katie Mendelson that their music was “intensive, sensitive, and runs the gamut of the human condition.” And yes, the horn is part of the sound, not just a catchy band name. “Our album is actually centered around the French horn,” David said. “It has to do with the struggle to understand who you are. The reason why the whole band started was Robert felt like he wasn’t fitting in. In modern society, the horn player has very limited options.”

New single, ‘Renaissance Man’, is a collaboration with Laurence Jepson and Charlie Dale of indie pop duo Lejon. “‘Renaissance Man’ is a tune about the simpler things in love,” David tells Popdose. “The track features true Renaissance period instruments: Robert on Natural Horn heavily disguised as a Moog bass synth, Charlie on recorder masquerading as a synth organ and a piano break by Laurence recorded on an 18th Century (ok, not quite Renaissance) Steinway.”

Known for its “delightfully bizarre” (Vice) spin on indie-dance, French Horn Rebellion (FHR) is a music project that combines dance-punk, French touch, and electro with classic songwriting sensibilities.  It was co-founded by Robert and his brother David Perlick-Molinari in 2007.  Both currently work at David’s production studio in Williamsburg Brooklyn, YouTooCanWoo, and curate a new indie disco and house record label, @toucansounds

In 2007, Robert was a young classical horn player in the Chicago area making beats on his laptop, and throwing house parties.  Finding more joy in electronic/dance music than in the classics, he with the help of his brother David (who had recently produced MGMT’s Time to Pretend EP) created FHR and the duo released their first single together, ‘Up All Night.’

Soon after, Robert booked a 30-show national tour (mostly using Myspace) from Brooklyn to El Paso, playing every DIY electro party along the way.  From the friends they made that year, FHR was invited to play SXSW, sparking interest from the dance scenes of London and Paris to Seoul and Tokyo.  As a poster child of Brooklyn eclecticism, they received steady radio play on BBC’s Radio 1 and event performances with Les Inrocks and Kitsuné Maison.  In two years, the brothers went from playing the punk-venue basement at Lit Lounge in Manhattan, to the basement of the Louvre in Paris for the show of famed fashion legend Jean Charles de Castelbajac.

Over the last 10 years FHR has performed as a DJ as well as a live band across 5 continents, while collaborating on stage and in the studio with some of the most influential music artists of our time including official remixes for Beyoncé, Two Door Cinema Club, Sia, OMD and tours with Of Montreal, Cut Copy, Yelle, Hot Chip, SebastiAn as well as original studio collaborations with St. Lucia, Autograf, Jody Watley, The Knocks and many more. 

They have received praise from some of the world's leading media outlets including The New York Times, Billboard and The Huffington Post.  LA Weekly said, “We wish America had a million bands like this,” while in the UK,The Guardian regarded FHR's music as “killer dance-pop.”
