Almost Ready (2017, arr 2022) - Brass Ensemble

A short piece for a brass quartet. I was aiming for a chorale-like feel. The piece is cast in a simple ABBA form, traveling in and out of keys as distant as G major, F# minor, and Eb major. A careful listener might hear the theme in its inverted, retrograde, and retrograde inverted forms.

Midnight Waltz  is a piece that weaves the mystique of the nighttime into its melodies. This piece transports listeners to a moonlit ballroom, where shadows dance elegantly under the canopy of stars. With its flowing rhythms and hauntingly beautiful themes, "Waltz of the Night" captures the essence of midnight serenity, evoking both romance and mystery in every note.

Waiting for Santa is an energetic work depicting a child’s anticipation of Santa’s arrival on Christmas Eve. Pure joy can be seen on their face as they look out their window hoping to catch a glimpse of Santa and his reindeer soaring through the sky making his way to their home. As the child awaits, sleepiness overtakes them and they fall into a wonder-filled dream of Santa climbing down the chimney with his bag full of amazing gifts.

This traditional French carol dates from the late 15th century and the early 16th century. It celebrates all of the figures in the crèche, the handmade nativity scenes found throughout France, where they are part of the Christmas celebration in homes and in town squares.  This arrangement features the different families of instruments bringing variety to this haunting ancient melody.

Haven't uploaded for a while!

During these times I have taken a break from the usual orchestral arrangements and worked on other styles of music. These end up mostly being chamber, jazz combos and some concert band work. Here is one of them that I worked on this month for a national arranging competition in Australia. The central theme was Australian Folk songs where we had to arrange 3 pieces into a singular medley for a wind-ensemble orchestration.

It was very exciting to see that this entry won 1st prize in the end and got officially published!! It meant significant to me as I was competing against music students/graduates, meanwhile here I am who I mostly self-taught myself how to compose. It is certainly a milestone and I cannot wait to strive for further improvements in the future.

It is written with a structural narrative reflecting Australian history as its central theme is based on Australian folk songs. The piece begins with a didgeridoo drone sound imitated on the bassoons and bass clarinet, depicting the image of an indigenous settlement before the arrival of European explorers. As the piece progresses, the style transitions into a march, which reflects the busy atmosphere during major developments of the land. It is also a tribute to workers whose contributions to infrastructure have created heritage buildings such as the Flinders Street Station in Melbourne, Queen Victoria Building in Sydney and many more. The march then built up to a triumph at bar 59, in an attempt to portray the Australian gold rush where it attracted further settlers.

However, the ending of this medley ends in a rather sorrowful tone. This approach was to emphasise the negative aspects of Australian history. Specifically, multiple music phrases have not to be resolved to a cadence, such as between bars 13-14, 86-87 and 88-89. In the original folk song, the lyrics were “Our Jack Come Home Today”. However, there have been many indigenous children who never returned to their indigenous families due to various government policies that attempted to eradicate their culture and these people have been known as the “Stolen Generation”.

Hence, when performing this piece, the players are encouraged to celebrate Australia’s prosperity through its years of development, meanwhile, be aware of the reconciliation that our society still needs when moving forward.

Australian Folk Song Medley - "Stories of the Land and People"

This piece responds to 'Flag' by Theaster Gates. I was struck by the way the artwork displays horror, as the initial reaction upon seeing the art is that it is a firehose. It is only when you look closer that you realise that it is a decommissioned firehose and probably covered in
soot and ash. I really wanted to emulate the sense of horror, tension, bleakness and desolation that I think the artwork possesses.

Hi, my name is Ryan Cox. I love music. Music is in my blood...or better put, IS my blood. When I was young, I always had a song I was humming or tune I was making up out of thin air, and it often got me in trouble for humming during 'quiet time' in kindergarten. Seriously, I just can't help it. I can't help but be musical.

These songs have taken years to perfect, but the recent innovations in the open-source program "Musescore" has inspired me to take off like never before, remastering songs I have worked on for the last 20 years. This has prompted me to once again take up the composing mantle and start a new channel to feature this change.

I started my musical journey at the age of five, initially composing music with tablature taught by my father. Beginning with the penny whistle and violin, I played in our family band, busking on the streets of Bath.

Our travels across the country inspired compositions like "Road to Wareham." Music became my sanctuary, especially after being diagnosed with Asperger's syndrome. In college, under mentors such as Dr. Rick Birley, Dr. Richard Hall, and Dr. Julie Trevett, I honed my skills in composition, theory, and piano, transitioning to formal music notation using Sibelius.

Today, I compose for film, video games, and theatre. My music, influenced by my diverse experiences, aims to evoke emotion and tell stories.
