Sometimes so much modern classical and ambient music drives me to a desire to cut it up a bit. Slice all of those expanding pads with a sharp-edged and surgically-precise glitchy blade, which is an intrinsic part of my sonic DNA. With that said, I can always rely on the trusted raster to serve me a delicious cocktail of spiked-up goodness. In the case of their latest album, scheduled to drop this upcoming Friday, November 25th, the master chef, chief surgeon, and dystopian storyteller is the one and only Franck Vigroux, who, albeit has not appeared on these pages in the past, has been on my radar for many years, particularly from his releases on Leaf, Monotype, Aesthetical, and Matière Mémoire. In 2020 Vigroux appeared on this Chemnitz-based (Germany) artistic platform with his album, Ballades Sur Lac Gelé. This follow-up, titled Magnetoscope, is part of the same series of releases that "interrelate strict and cool analogue sounds, drum machines and noise landscapes in an epic, almost cinematic way." The title and the synth sounds which appear throughout the album (and on a piece which I'm premiering for you today) refer to the "terrifying time" of the 80s. The influences of "Blade Runner" as watched through an old VHS tape, the sounds of a warped cassette tape left out to melt in your steaming brick of a car in the parking lot, the unruly analogue music machines that never followed your directions and seemed to have a mind of their own - all of this is here, on Magnetoscope.

In 2023, a new private space opened in Madrid with the goal to become a meeting point purely for the enjoyment and discovery of underground music. His thought process behind the mix: “Growing up with lounge, ambient and progressive soul, dub rounded up the deep, sonic backdrop of my early days. Over the past five years of mixing, I realised that no matter what genre or style I am diving in, I always end up in the depths of dub-infused sounds, particularly dub techno. As it is something my mind naturally gravitates towards, I felt the urge to revisit my collection of dusty dub techno records and align them with contemporary productions. Just as my explorations in sound and rhythm this mix encapsulates different moods, rhythms and dynamics. Musically speaking, dub techno fascinates me due to its hauntingly beautiful simplicity, allowing each element to breathe and contribute to a partly tangible, partly tripped out feel. Enjoy.”

Improvisational psychedelic journeys recorded in Vilnius, Lithuania as part of Bunkersesh project.

Bunkersesh is an underground music project that was based in Vilnius, Lithuania 2022-2023 exploring the world of psychedelic atmosphere. The name bunkersesh comes from the location where this music community formed and created their musical haven - a real bunker in the centre of Vilnius. This is where musicians of different prisms found deep connection through the full spectrum of sonic creation, often exploring memories of ancient tradition, inevitable psychedelia, unsettling atmospheres - all expressed through a futuristic synthesis in the feel and groove of the music that finds them.
