The Funky Jackin' Mothership Mix (Summer 2023)

Had such a blast throwing down breaks with my Duck Pond / HPZ crews and Space Cowboys homies @ Burning Man's annual Burnal Equinox! It's rare I play breaks out but I think it might be my favorite genre to bust a move to - hope you enjoy the mix!

Akka Pilla, which means "bass (of a voice)" in Choctaw, is what I have titled this mix I did for Caravan (6/2/23). I brought not only my bass and midtempo music to this event, but my knowledge and ear for Indigenous sounds of what is now known as the American continent. I expanded this mix with sounds from all over the world that includes Southeast Asia and the Middle East. 

"CARAVAN is inspired by the true-life historic Silk Road that wound its way through Europe, Asia, and Africa. Along this route, there was a mingling of cultures and backgrounds that provided a platform for them to interact, come together, and contribute to a newly created global market. We have the same vision to create a global connection, this time through music."

We were pleased to finally host @emash on our stellar Friday night lineup at Otherworld 2023. em.ash has been a Vancouver Island staple DJ for many years, and chances are that if you walked up to a stage at any point during Otherworld and said "ooh, who is this? This is really good!" it was probably him on the decks :)

FREQUENCY UNDERGROUND INTERVIEW WITH WHATEVER, MAN:

How did you come up with your dj name: 
- The origin of “Whatever, Man” came from a phrase I say all the time, to the point where I get mocked for it. I also believe music should be fun so I wanted to pick a name that didn’t sound so serious. As a DJ, I like to play a wide range of music and it all depends on the scenario and the time and place, so when people ask me what do you play, it’s Whatever, Man. 

How and when did you get into djing: 
- I’ve been DJing for about a year. There’s a saying in the industry, if you hang out long enough you either become a promoter or a DJ. Turns out to be accurate and I ended up doing both. At the start I swore I wouldn’t DJ and instead I would get involved with every other aspect of the industry. I started DJing simply because I wanted to share music that I like. Being surrounded by DJs, my days of being a Spotify DJ came to an end so if I wanted to share music at parties, I needed to learn how to DJ. 

Who are your musical influences and what is your inspiration: 
- I get inspiration from all music, specifically from small events and friends that make music. My inspiration comes from my love of sharing music people probably haven’t heard. I love going to small festival gatherings, like Sonic Oasis, and I always leave feeling inspired by the wide range of styles and music people share. It’s truly a showcase of underground music and new sounds.

Describe your sound as a DJ:
- Gut Music!! It's not defined by one style of sound, beat, or tempo. Gut music is every moment where music transcended fear, annihilated pain, embraced sadness, and lifted indifference. Music is an expression of emotion so I try to deliver that while also having it be fun and upbeat. But really it’s, Whatever, Man and it’s dictated by the time, place, and scenario.

What does the future hold in store for you as an artist:
- As a DJ, it’s just to continue to have fun with it and use it as an outlet to express my emotions. My main area of focus is supporting artist and growing the community through artist management and event production. When it makes sense, I like to play small events, usually put on by friends and I specifically love opening and setting the vibe for the night!
