Listening Post: Batch 571

I began writing 'State of Mind' in Hawaii in April 2023, and completed the song in December 2024 in South Korea. The collaboration with Flambeau, a fellow Uni student, marked a significant turning point in the song's development and we created a piece that we both adore and believe has potential. We have uploaded to Distrokid, shared the Pre-Save link and plan to submit to playlists, music blogs. The song explores the pursuit of an elusive "ideal" dictated by society and encourages self-discovery.

'Now I Swim' is an extraordinary and epic ode to life, imbued with the enchantment and allure of the sea.
The track is inspired by and features the voice of Sheila, a close friend of the band. 

“Now I Swim” evokes Shelia’s recollections of growing up with her family on the Galway coast. Tragically, she lost her father, a windsurfing champion, a few years ago. However, through her daily swim in the Irish Sea,
Sheila has found a way to connect with his memory and cope with her grief.

“Recline under the sea line, lounge in the blanket,
The guardian is resting, absorbing every droplet.
And in this garden, we all stand up and stride,
Everybody swimming, every day, any tide.”

The song emerges from a tapestry of field recordings woven together to create a nautical soundscape. Filled with crashing waves and the crunch of oyster shells, Gemma’s haunting lyrical delivery floats above the melody like a siren’s call before the song reaches its thrilling climax.

In my case it’s my love for creating Music.

‘Bring Me Back from the Black Beyond‘ is an anthemic ear-crusher drenched in pomp and severity. Anchored by a colossal dual synth-guitar riff and a tainted goth-disco beat, the track is a desperate final plea from a lover stranded in the afterlife.

‘…Black Beyond’ is a cocktail of odd bedfellows – part Joy Division, part Goldfrapp, part Kasabian, part Rocky Horror. It conjures allusions to Yeats at his most apocalyptic through a smog of fuzz bass and smeared makeup, while melding genres into a subversive electro-rock dancefloor anthem. It’s as histrionic as it is hook-laden, as fatal as it is bombastic – with love at its core. This is a song that could just as easily be heard blaring from the gates of Hades as from the football terraces or the death disco. A song for all occasions – especially those involving necromancy.

Lines of Flight returns after two years with Celilo Falls // Crush, their first Double A-side and the first release since expanding to a five-piece. While maintaining their electro roots and reflective, human lyrics, the three new members inject a raw new wave energy into the sound adding post-punk basslines and pulsing rhythms adding fresh urgency and depth to the band's sonic identity.
This evolution is distilled in lead track Celilo Falls, which opens with a multi-voice plea, "I never wanted it to come to this," before launching into a driving bass and drum riff. The song’s sonic DNA echoes Killing Joke, Breeders, and Beastie Boys, balancing urgency with introspection. Celilo Falls reflects on the destruction of the past in pursuit of the new without questioning what has been taken before truly understanding its worth.
