Argentinian DJ/producer Nadia Popoff first joined the AMAM team earlier this year by contributing to the second Hand Out compilation. Just as the international tech-house scene is catching on to her name, AMAM founder Alessio Mereu has invited her back for a full EP—so players, come place your wagers on Black Jack.

The opening title track shows Popoff’s nuance for manipulating the beat, funking up the 4/4 groove with deranged delay that will hook in your ears in from the start. Then comes the sultry, synthetic groove of the bassline, gently nudging you onto the dancefloor with a subtle finesse. Of course, Alessio Mereu couldn’t resist dipping his fingers into “Black Jack”, providing an alternate perspective that brings the melodic aspects more into focus than the rhythm, exploring different frequencies to tickle your ear canals. Fellow AMAM stalwart Hooved—one of the label’s brightest personalities who just released the Timeless EP—offers his own remix, a twitching, buggy experience that is determined to make its way under your skin. 

On the second part of the EP, Popoff offers the confidently sly “Timeless”, contrasted by the energetic house cut “My Friend Sebastian” with its jazzy drum fills to add that human touch behind the percussive machinery. A fine full statement from Ms. Popoff!

1. Nadia Popoff - Black Jack

Greek producers Lee Burton and Mr. Statik are already familiar to fans of groove-inducing, deep minimal house, creating intricately woven tracks that spark dancefloors and neurotransmitters in equal measure. Individually, they’ve released on an impressive array of labels like BPitch, Klik and Mo’s Ferry, and the two buddies have also collaborated on IRR and Rotary Cocktail. Now, AMAM gets first dibs at issuing the first release as Steampunk’d, their new collaborative project, hotter than Ashton Kutcher in metallic neo-Victorian garb.

“The Plot Thickens”, the EP’s woozy namesake track, is propelled by highly compressed funk juice that maintains a relatively lower BPM, with plenty of space in between downbeats for playful purrs and clicks, conveying – as the title implies – a growing sense of tension. “Sinderella” is a similarly eerie but catchy fairy tale run on jumpity clockwork – play this one after midnight and see what transformations take place! 

On the flip side, “Peanuts in Love” is a comparitively more straightforward framework, with wispy vocals yearning atop a vibrant house beat. After the original version comes Ion Ludwig’s remix, turning it into a more minimalist instrumental. Finally, as a digital bonus track, “Talking in my Way” brings back the funk with twitching sub-bass and a deep-throated vocal hook. Stay tuned for more steaming piles from this punky duo!

The gathering of the Copied Cows in the huge court hall of the multistoried farming house made a remarkable impression.

Freshly washed and combed, cow veteran Breger opened the event with an emotional statement against law & order. Followed by Manu Ferrantini 's lecture about slick aspects of being a duck and Peter Groskreutz from the north, who did manipulate the organ to explore it. After swiss Bnsch + https://soundcloud.com/debalsommer did present their cattle-investigation about sunshine and mountains, big city calf Ali Een had her debut: the report about smoking abstract cigars in a concrete environment. A group of speakers firmed under the term Konfetti Klub Ensemble and the gathering was surprised about the fact that cows can be serious animals and playing the trumpet at the same time. 
However the founding members of Falling Cows were lying on carpets, after their completed excursion into the world of flying. Timboletti arrived from his exotic train journey and started to describe it in most colorful expressions. Next to him, the first cow member of his own cat-tribe Caterkarlos, did head under the roof and pointed out deep aspects of the identification of truth. Last but not least, spanish Cow Pilas balanced the preparation for the 29th revolution on two swing chairs.

All in all a mind-blowing conference!

The Hemmann lasagna is ready! With a healthy dose of ground beef and sun-ripened tomatoes between the sauce and layers of pasta with a peppy salad.
    Once again Marek has two tracks with which he arms the planet richly, but also where the cooking spoon just explodes in the kitchen. The writer has quite a steam building upÖbut this music is just so filling, that the stomach just knows that there was a hole there.
    To prepare for this first album from the Hemmann kitchen, two long sides strike a tone with a powerful punch, breathless grooves with a long puff and an empire of sounds for the endorphin thrust within and without the headphones. This isnít a construction, but rather a composition.
    Exquisitely vibrating grooves with a hopping deepness, percussive elements together with a melodic party radiating in a finely sensed positivity. Itís as if you could together with Inessa and Gemini mutate into a bouncing ball. When his tracks begin to spin, that which happens to the listeners is the stuff dreams are made of.

Benedikt Frey is many. Or just one? He is a composer. An arranger. A DJ. A Liveact. A ghost producer. A fan. He also plays in bands like INIT, or Dolphins or KEYS +++ produced the last two albums for Chris Imler. Downbeat in experimental dub zones. The goat for Edits and remixes. When house was his nation, he used to listen to pen names like Suedmilch or Venedikt Reyf. He still likes the music formed under their umbrella, but today his tomorrow is not echoed in yesterday. His sound signature moved on. Into the open. He founded labels like R.i.O. or Serious Trouble. 

He lives in Berlin. Physically. In mind Benedikt Frey is at many places. Traveling far thru his home studio that is a flat a studio a flat an instrument a record collection a flat a studio. Everywhere gear, vinyl, tapes, instruments, rooms for spontaneous sonic notions, these moments, when a sudden strike of stimulation falls. He is inspired a lot. For music to dance. Music for films. Music for live shows. Music for dancing glows. Techno, house, downbeat, ambient, jungle, electronics outside the norms. Those transportive ones. Jamming with others. Jamming with his mind. In Berlin Wedding, North of the town, where the lights dimmed low, neighbors share the flow, and a small river runs slow.  As a DJ he plays here, there, everywhere. Big clubs, small shacks, festivals, gatherings. From fast to 90 BPM - as he feels. 

For himself. For the crowd. In the spur. He still remembers his club kid days. Going to dance with friends. Down there in Offenbach. Doing the Robert Johnson. Collective emotions for a better tomorrow. These he still seeks. In his music. His shows. His collaborations. You can book him for a party. For enlightenment. For ecstasy or introspective perspectives. Dancing slow, whilst pirouetting a high-pitched show. 

Since more than a decade. His own music is out there, too. Bringing his spirits in sound. On his own labels. On international imprints like ESP Institute, Hivern Discs, Craigie Knowes, or Emotional Response. Solo works. Driving ones. Slow drills. Teased during his DJ dates around the planet. 

The music plays day and night. Inspiration comes. From a simple kick drum. A movie sequence. A bird on the sill. A picture, totally still. Can’t kick that feeling when it hits. Benedikt Frey. In dreams. In streams. In music. Emotions. Situations. At night. In those flashy lights, when it bites.
