Arad, real name Dara Smith, first joined the VOITAX catalogue in June 2020. Back then, the Irish artist served us up with »Radiance Haze« - a 6-track EP, spanning from heavy-hitting breaks to the ethereal ambience, with heavy features of Smith’s vocals. Known for his multidisciplinary vision on music, he has also previously made seminal moves with his work as one half of Lakker, alongside Eomac, dropping groundbreaking music on heavyweight labels such as R&S, Blueprint and Stroboscopic Artefacts.

For his second EP on VOITAX, Smith now returns with five beautifully crafted tracks that he titles »Augmented Fantasy«. While following a similar approach, he does not fail to expand his repertoire of celestial dream-like atmospheres, which he carefully surrounds with a whole variety of vocals, and accurately placed broken drum patterns. In addition to his own singing, Arad also presents two impressive collaboration tracks, in which one of them features the voice of Stine Omar, also widely known as one half the Berlin-based pop duo EASTER. Driving rhythmics and processed, grainy vocals turn this piece into guaranteed hit material. Another collaboration with the befriended vocalist and music producer Nina Hynes serves as a touching closing chapter for this brilliantly produced, eclectic 5-tracker. All pieces are perfectly glued together while keeping their very individual character and soundscapes. The listener is certainly left with an augmented fantasy, as well as a curiosity to hear more to come from the Irish talent.

Greek-born DJ and producer Alex π is the founder of Pi Electronics label and event series, as well as co-founder of record label Modal Analysis. He is an adept of many genres, ranging from industrial, techno, EBM and electro to ambient, experimental and noise. Under his moniker 3.14, he has numbered releases on venerated imprints such as Amok Tapes, CLFT, MORD, Khemia, Area Z, Gwi Myeon, the 29Nov Films and System Revival. In the post pandemic era, he releases his archive of productions from the years 2016 - 2021 : a blend of Techno/EBM influences, with processed vocals and noisy textures, in a ’song’ like structure. Aiming to crossover the 80s aesthetic to a techno type of production using machines of the '10s, the concept here is to avoid the sounding of a tool track while still staying within the boarders of dance-floor minded music. The archives will be released in two instalments: Part I on Tripalium Corp and Part II on Soil records.

"When British Airways got privatized and listed on the London Stock Exchange, somewhere in Canada the first Starbucks outside of the US opened, and the Walt Disney Company signed an agreement with the French Prime Minister to construct Disneyland Paris. In the sky above southern Argentina, Equatorial Guinea, Cameroon, Sudan, Ethiopia, Djibouti, northern Somalia, and the Atlantic Ocean a hybrid solar eclipse materialized for 7.57 seconds, whilst Margaret Thatcher performed for 45-minutes on Soviet television.

Some days later, The Simpsons cartoon first appears as a series of shorts on The Tracey Ullman Show, Diego Maradona wins his first Italian soccer championship with Napoli, and Eighteen-year-old West German pilot Mathias Rust lands a private plane on Red Square in Moscow. In the mists of the world's first conference on artificial life at the Los Alamos National Laboratory, the first Kentucky Fried Chicken restaurant in Mainland China opens in Beijing, and Prozac gets approved for use as an antidepressant in the United States."

A lot happened in the year 1987 - the year that Benedikt Frey's latest mini album takes its name from. Coming out via R.i.O, the label he runs with a bunch of friends in Berlin, the six tracks balance light and dark; the past and the future; otherworldly dreams and harsh realities. Sonically it sucks you in and pulls you under, ushering you into a trance-like state that sees dub, trip hop, industrial and downtempo coalesce in perfect harmony.

But it’s all there: The Red Square, the untouched land of the Val d'Europe, Diego on fuego. Six dark-ish tracks in trance, melancholic dub, downbeat heaven, journey music depths, all full of light and yet so dark. Futuristic dramas linked to a speculative past. In our dreams all might look different. The eclipse may last 27-minutes. You meet Neuromancer cyberpunks and blade running Ghost dogs, all taught to hack by Phrack. Cristal clear melodies, sampled voices, and veiled basslines, analogue scopes, and digital ropes, longing for a past that storm into the future. A time where deep listening widens the acoustics into infinity, while neon glows charm the light smog. Benedikt Frey been down there. Or maybe not. His latest music tells stories from the bygone, vested with the forthcoming. Come in and look out. There is nothing to see, yet so much to hear.

San Diego‘s Secret Fun Club has been the longstanding musical outlet for drummer and engineer Sal Gallegos (Some Girls, Three One G) and bassist John Rieder. An ongoing collaboration that formerly included guitarist Nathan Joyner (Hot Nerds, Some Girls, All Leather), the band has been making odd, challenging, and relentlessly heavy music on its own terms since 2000.
A duo of bass and drums since 2007, Sal and John began writing, demoing, and performing brutal new arrangements for two solid years, finally recording what would become the Three One G LP Skull With Antlers during the first half of 2009. With drums that call to mind Bonham (if he had preferred meth to booze) playing sides of beef and bass tones that alternate between motorcycle rumble and insectoid modulation and filtering, the band has mastered doomy, frenetic noise with occasional forays into quiet minimalism and copy-and-paste sound sculpture. W.T. Nelson (Geronimo, Bastard Noise) has collaborated with his brood of Trogotronic outboard gear to contribute painful frequencies across the range of human hearing. The newest album enlists his assistance again, along with equally brutal noisemakers Justin Pearson (Dead Cross, The Locust, Retox, Planet B), Sam Lopez and Esteban Flores.

Secret Fun Club sees itself fundamentally as a live band: 700 tube watts pushing apocalyptic bass wave-forms through sixteen ten-inch speakers—paired with some of the loudest, most punishing drumming imaginable. The band’s sets are indulgences in volume and repetition, abrupt turns and uncomfortable silences.

Secret Fun Club’s latest release, the wild-eyed brainchild of Sal Gallegos and John Rieder, once again show that these two have mastered the art of auditory experimentation.  Fluctuating between moments of scientific static worthy of alien airwaves on “Billy Joel Osteen,” to seemingly straightforward jazz punctuated by soothing vibraphone and just-slightly-off time signatures that feel like a calm descent into madness on “Ted Nugent Was Goth in High School," Secret Fun Club proves repeatedly that their creativity is vast and unrestricted by any one musical direction. Throbbing wails and air raid siren assaults accompanied by punishing, repetitive rhythms give way to supremely sinister howls and collaborative noise from the likes of W.T. Nelson, Justin Pearson, Sam Lopez, and Esteban Flores on the eleven and a half minute track, Black Metal to English Dictionary.”
Which brings us to the tracklist.
Never taking themselves too seriously, the duo has a penchant for titling their songs with pun-filled monikers like “Pat Minotaur”, “Scott Baiowülf” and “Pariah Carey”-- amusing juxtapositions of classic history/literature and tabloid-prone celebrities that would leave you rolling your eyes were the jokes to come from your dad, but smirking in the context of its use for doomy, sludgy, experimental metal such as this. And in a way, the meeting of highbrow and lowbrow in Secret Fun Club’s tracklisting seems like the perfect metaphor for the band’s music: impressively composed pieces highly calculated in musical structure, and yet simultaneously confrontational, gritty, and unrefined in tone.

Maybe the first time you will listen to Hirotaka Miyamoto you will have a sort of flashback of that feeeling you had the first time you heard Jean Michel Jarre or Vangelis sounds. Why? Because suddenly your brain freezes in search of a tag or description and you just cant find it. “Circles” is the first full lenght album for Avantroots this Japanese musician launches, composing in the same way those pioneers did back at the time…With devotion as the entrance, constance as the main course and risk for dessert just like high culinary art in a degustation menu:

It starts tickling gently yours ears with Fake Meltdown all the way until Ivory, to kick like a sleep twitch with Soulwind. But it doesnt finish here, since this last one hands it over to the sounds of Neo Terra which helps us with our daydreaming and keeps going until the end like instruments invented.

Knowing that Electronic music is something big, “Circles” should be heard without hesitation, just as its creator intended. This is not an album to put as a background, it is an experience that requires one hour of contemplation in order to delight in every bite. Jacques Satre shies away from conventional formulas, both when it comes to mixing and to producing. His tracks have somewhat of alchemy, for they are a peculiar mélange of eccentric elements that altogether become an intense sonic acid trip. Collaborator in the Positive Education festival and with a constant output in Worst Records, he is undoubtedly part of a thriving electronic music scene in Southern France where slow has become the new fast.

Which brings us to 'Faint Hearted', the Burnley-bred, Berlin-based maestro's debut solo opus; eight entirely analogue constructions riding the wave from wormhole hardcore clatter ('Lebensform') to body-compressing subbass undulations ('Irreligious'), trekking through frayed techno minimalism ('Status Narcissism') to mind-drift ambient ('Sense Data') and what sounds like a Demdike Stare track constructed on a worksite ('Rejoice'). But if you ask us, the best bits occur right at the end, with the ominous bass, funereal strings and obliterated noise of 'Archaic Thought Pattern 1' or the field recording clangour of 'Queuing', and certainly the majestically gratifying yet subtly dystopian 9 minute closer 'Loran Dreams'. As an individual sonic statement, it's an evocative exposition of Miles’ love of electronic music in all its shapes, harnessing his fidgety production style into one expansive, restless set of tracks.

Benedikt Frey is many. Or just one? He is a composer. An arranger. A DJ. A ghost producer. A fan. He plays in bands like INIT, or Dolphins or KEYS +++ produced the last two albums for Chris Imler. Downbeat in experimental dub zones. The goat for Edits and remixes. When house was his nation, he used to listen to pen names like Suedmilch or Venedikt Reyf. He still likes the music formed under their umbrella, but today his tomorrow is not echoed in yesterday. His sound signature moved on. Into the open. He founded labels like R.i.O. or Serious Trouble. 

He lives in Berlin. Physically. In mind Benedikt Frey is at many places. Traveling far thru his home studio that is a flat a studio a flat an instrument a record collection a flat a studio. Everywhere gear, vinyl, tapes, instruments, rooms for spontaneous sonic notions, these moments, when a sudden strike of stimulation falls. He is inspired a lot. For music to dance. Music for films. Music for live shows. Music for dancing glows. Techno, house, downbeat, ambient, jungle, electronics outside the norms. Those transportive ones. Jamming with others. Jamming with his mind. In Berlin Wedding, North of the town, where the lights dimmed low, neighbors share the flow, and a small river runs slow.  As a DJ he plays here, there, everywhere. Big clubs, small shacks, festivals, gatherings. From fast to 90 BPM - as he feels. 

For himself. For the crowd. In the spur. He still remembers his club kid days. Going to dance with friends. Down there in Offenbach. Doing the Robert Johnson. Collective emotions for a better tomorrow. These he still seeks. In his music. His shows. His collaborations. You can book him for a party. For enlightenment. For ecstasy or introspective perspectives. Dancing slow, whilst pirouetting a high-pitched show. 

Since more than a decade. His own music is out there, too. Bringing his spirits in sound. On his own labels. On international imprints like ESP Institute, Hivern Discs, Craigie Knowes, or Emotional Response. Solo works. Driving ones. Slow drills. Teased during his DJ dates around the planet. 

The music plays day and night. Inspiration comes. From a simple kick drum. A movie sequence. A bird on the sill. A picture, totally still. Can’t kick that feeling when it hits. Benedikt Frey. In dreams. In streams. In music. Emotions. Situations. At night. In those flashy lights, when it bites.
