DJ mixes

London-based collaborative electronic drone choir NYX are reshaping the role of the traditional female choir through organic and synthesised means. They are currently under the creative direction of Josh Thomas, and Aotearoa-raised Philippa Neels and musical director Sian O'Gorman. Earlier this year, they released the album Deep England alongside Gazelle Twin, alongside a performance film directed by Iain Pollard and Jane Forsyth. Alongside solo projects, NYX are currently developing special projects with Christina Vantzou, Hatis Noit, Dan Tobin Smith, Hatis Noit, Iona Fortune and Alicia Jane Turner with Dead Light. We feel they are one of the most groundbreaking acts around at the moment, and are delighted to hand over the reins. 

About the mix: "With clubs and festivals reopening in the UK this past weekend, we decided to use the first half of our FP mix to showcase some of the more uptempo electronic music and club bangers we've been listening to later. In the second half things slowly dissolve into more fractured electronic soundscapes, fourth world excursions and ambient drone. The mix features an unreleased track of ours 'Mutualism' which you'll be hearing more about soon. This radio show was mixed by NYX Creative Director & DJ Josh T. "

In celebration of our guest's birthday and the 50th offering from our fledgling nest at the Abstract without Abstraction HQ in Denver, Colorado, we are incredibly honored to present a special offering from an irreplaceable presence in the city's scene, Routing Number. 

Routing Number is a gifted DJ and keen selector who we first encountered in the realms of Denver's house & disco parties, but who we quickly learned is unable to be pigeon-holed; effortlessly traversing the sounds of the spectrum and seen beaming with an infectious enthusiasm on the dance floor as often as they are found behind the decks. Here, they pay homage to their metalhead roots, exploring the intersections between ambient, noise, heavy metal, and dance music in a mix delivered in a style that epitomizes what this series was originally intended to be all about.

As moods reflect, morph, and mirror the weather (here the depths of winter), we hope that you stay warm, look out for one another, turn the volume up, and enjoy pouring over this chapter in our guest's sound. For us, we hope it is just one of the opening chapters, with many more to come. London is awash with parties, promoters and peddlers. Only the very best rise to the top amidst an increasingly saturated market, it requires individuality, a sense of understanding and ultimately it requires skill. commune has been run by Josh Thomas and Will Edge (alongside Alex Powis and James Rice) for four years now and has played host to an array of guests, however, more recently the pair have adopted the guise as disc jockeys in their own right and have taken the name further than ever before. With a regular show on Balamii they have established themselves as a force to be reckoned with in the booth. This amidst running events, which includes club nights to film screenings, ensures they stay agile and at the very forefront of dance music and culture in the capital. Oh, and they have a studio too.

We invited Josh and Will aka Noah Hope and Billson, to contribute to our mix series as we showcase their talent and talk shop.
