One of Viper’s most well-loved compilations is returning for the first time since 2018: The Sound of Drum & Bass 2021. Curated by Futurebound, the compilation features a plethora of the best & brightest new Drum & Bass in the game, sharing a name with the popular Spotify playlist that shines a spotlight on the best new music each week. This year’s compilation features 10 brand new exclusives plus a selection of favourites from the past year, all leading to an unmissable album release. In classic Viper fashion, new exclusives from the hottest up-and-comers sit alongside the year’s biggest releases from scene veterans Matrix & Futurebound, Cyantific, Rene LaVice, Grafix, Koven, Ekko & Sidetrack , Ruth Royall and more. Samplers like “Jungle Demon” from BLVCK CROWZ delivered a menacing underground weapon, while Futurebound & BMotion’s “Slap Suey” is the vibrant, electrifying dancefloor rave anthem of the summer. New names Tall Order & Phonetic both delivered mighty first impressions after being discovered by Futurebound, the album also shines a spotlight on the mysterious CydeFX with the infectious jump-up number “Soul” that is sure to be a hit on the club circuit, and newest signing SOL gave us a heartfelt taste of what to expect from the rest of the LP.

And as if those first few samplers weren’t enough, the full compilation offers even more never before heard exclusives from the worldwide Viper family. Bugwell returns to Viper with “Power Out”, a murky yet groovy stomper with impressive intricacy, while The Voss gives us a hefty dose of USDNB with the hair-raising “Must Love Dags” alongside the equally infectious “Need My Love” from Simon Splice. Last but not least, the compilation features a new record from Tengu & Maddy V, featured on Episode 005 of Viper Radio, “Underneath The Shadows”.

Nowhere else would you find a compilation that stacks some of the scene’s most well-loved veterans against so much new talent, but that’s exactly what’s made Viper standout over the years. Over the last 18 years Viper Recordings have become synonymous with exceptional A&R, the quickest of flicks through our back catalog showcases a plethora of the scene's biggest names. Label boss Futurebound’s impeccable ability to spot talent means we’ve seen the likes of The Prototypes, Camo & Krooked and Sigma, to name a mere few, all through the doors of the label. Fans of the Viper radio will know the Future Fire concept, a moment in the show where Futurebound introduces us to drum and bass’s most promising acts, now here at Viper Recordings we’re taking it a step further and releasing a whole EP filled with the hottest new talent exclusively selected by the head honcho.

After debuting tracks from both DEAD WAX and Blackley ft. MC Dino on the recent sampler,
the next part of the EP’s selection starts with Twentytwo, with Elipsa on vocals for opening record ‘Energy’. With Elipsa’s dreamlike vocals sifting in and out of the mix, it’s easy to see why Twentytwo is gaining a reputation for merging soulful production with moodier underpinnings. Grinding bass channels smash through the mix despite its emotive build up and it shows a different flavor to an already impactful release.

Finishing the ‘Future Fire’ EP are the pounding dancefloor sounds of Houndeye’s ‘Falling Awake’. Adding another diverse yet hard-hitting take to the EP’s tracklist, Houndeye goes for the jugular with his offering. Filled with slamming drums and synth-led breakdowns, it highlights a flipside to Houndeye’s usually more laid back rhythms.

Producers Freshold and Renzo have both been making music since the rave days of the 90s and have since come together under the name Insomniax, a name that has become synonymous with quality drum & bass music. The duo from the UK have been an integral part of the Viper family since signing in 2014, with a history of strong releases, like ‘Goldsmith Road’, ‘Crying Rain’, and ‘Uridium’, which hit the top of the charts on Beatport last year.

Continuing to move from strength to strength, the latest release from Insomniax is a solo production by Freshold, the aptly named ‘Foghorn’. Text-to-speech AI voices set the scene from the beginning amidst a mysterious, misty introduction, footsteps plodding in the background adding to the eerie atmosphere. The dialogue between the two characters adds a menacing undertone, but the subtleties in the sound design are what really set this track apart.

Faint carnival sounds add to the building scenery, while the track’s title foghorns ring in the distance. The combination of such organic sounds coming together serve to create a natural, cinematic opening that truly tells a story. A creative approach to drum & bass, the track is incredibly refreshing and sparks the imagination.

However, the track isn’t all just about story-telling – Insomniax deliver a healthy dose of bass with the drop; the kind of minimal, spacious, rising bassline that is set to take the scene by storm. The bass is truly the star of the track, given ample room to breathe amidst the rest of the production and deservedly stealing the spotlight.

Crisp, clean, and totally creative, ‘Foghorn’ is sure to be a quick favourite for DJs and ravers alike.
