Mei (aka Temple Rat) is a Dj and music producer from Shanghai. Her music uses unique sound samples of natural environments. By combining the tranquility of Ambient tunes with ACID beats of the 90s and fierce drums she constructs a unique sound mixing modern vibes and ancient oriental rhythms. Mei has been exploring and expanding the many possibilities of music and sound creating this energy into a rhythm turning the dance floor into a frenzy. 
Mei released her Erhu ambient album Spring Dawn on Tokyo’s Kagerou Records and her latest works have been featured on Hong Kong’s FUFU Records Double Happiness 2021 edition as well as on Bangkok's Siamese Twins Records Katha compilation.

The Rabbit, according to the Chinese lunar calendar, symbolizes longevity, peace, and most suitable for the Unchained trajectory, creativity.  

Each year we set out to collate a mélange of ambiguous club-ready electronic whilst doing our part to cross that apparent divide between drum ‘n’ bass, jungle, footwork, grime and other members of the extended bass family.

We haven’t always been wed to the massive banger alone, but we have to admit, we always will be obsessed. We don’t consider ourselves possessed by sonic slabs that are looped beyond recognition, but we hold them in high regard just the same. 

So with that in mind, curating the Year of the Rabbit compilation took some time this year.

The Year Of The Rabbit showcases artists both emerging and established from China, Russia, England, Holland, and the United States. Be it wonky, divergent, mutant, deep, or simply in the vein of the pure epic club banger, every producer has something remarkable and distinctive going on.

We introduce and welcome back our 2023 Year of the Rabbit artist crew: Subp Yao, Radiax, Lakeway, Danky, Neve, Harka, Doctor Jeep, Leo Cap, Kray, Trophy, Airstrike, Throe, Pllfry and Dynamic Stab.

Four new deep, rhythmic works from Lyon producer Vardae inaugurate new London imprint OODA, co-curated by Forest Drive West and localhost.  The Kaipos EP drifts from ritualistic half tempo drums into deep warping techno and tripped out drones, illustrating Vardae’s unique genre-breaking approach to crafting powerful percussive entrancers for headphones and dancefloor.

A fitting prelude to the OODA project, conceived to explore polyrhythmic techno, bass and ambient experiments in all forms.

Sciama presents eight tempo-spanning tracks illustrating his signature sound design and beat science expertise on Collapse of Order for OODA2.

Following several essential releases on the venerated Auxiliary imprint, Collapse of Order sees Sciama interlace tactile rhythms with tensile signals and ethereal vocal vapours, anchored by a deep, low-end pressure - evoking a simultaneous sense of desolation and anticipation.

The surface and depth of water, its playfulness and danger, its frozen and flowing forms, water is never still, always in motion. It is fragile, sensitive to even the slightest environmental changes, yet simultaneously powerful and dangerous. For this recording, I drew inspiration from Laozi’s Dao De Jing, particularly the concept of “The highest good is like water” (上善若水). The nature of water—benefiting all things without contention—deeply resonates with me. Water can softly wear down stone yet transform into sharp ice, and its mutable qualities have shaped how sound evolves in this recording.

On a deeper level, this philosophy influences how I approach life: facing its highs and lows with the softness and resilience of water, and embracing the unknown with quiet strength. I hope this piece resonates with you as much as it did with me during its creation.

Ceaseless Benevolence In The Eye Of The Cascade (ArtScience Museum 2023)

React mindlessly, observe conciously

Frinla, a sound artist based in Singapore.

His artistic practice exudes a sense of depth, incorporating a plethora of dark industrial tones, rhythms and foley recordings. The soundscape of his  project is constructed using a blend of intricately sculptured harmonics produced by string instruments, low frequency rumbles, and machine noises.

Frinla's musical background was shaped through his previous bedroom project Navire Creux. This cathartic endeavour evolved his sound with deeper clarity, greater euphoria and higher states of consciousness for a transcendent audio experience.
