The Spectral iteration of the Ghostly 15 mixes comes courtesy of Derek Plaslaiko (who recently completed a grueling 12 hour Boiler Room out of his home in Berlin: http://boilerroom.tv/recording/derek-plaslaiko-12-hour-set/). Some words from Plaslaiko on the emergence of Spectral Sound & the mix he has curated below:

"I met Sam Valenti IV in the later years of the 90's just after he started the Ghostly International label. I feel like I almost instantly connected with Ghostly due to the music, but also because of the asthetic. Sam & I had more than a couple conversations about labels like Factory and 4AD and how the art was synonymously as important as the music it accompanied. I couldn't agree with him more!

As Ghostly grew, I think Sam realized that the more dancefloor-oriented music should almost have it's own place. Enter Spectral Sound.

Spectral Sound often gets confused as Ghostly. For instance, I am considered a Spectral Sound DJ, yet there are plenty of times that promoters end up simply putting Ghostly International next to my name. This doesn't offend me or anything, but the labels are quite different, and equally as important in my eyes. Spectral went on to help pave the way for what would end up being the "minimal" sound embraced first in Berlin, and then the rest of the world. However, I wouldn't just pin Spectral down as a "minimal" label. I feel Spectral (as well as Ghostly) is a great example of a dance music oriented label putting out music they like regardless of what genre it falls under. House, Acid House, Deep House, Tech House, Hard Techno, Deep Techno, Minimal Techno... you can find all of this and a lot more within Spectral's vast catalog.

So, Sam has asked me to pick 15 of my favorite Spectral Sound tracks and I gotta say... this list is a really hard one to make! How do I chose only 15 cuts of this incredible catalog? And even if I did, how much of it would be occupied by tracks produced by Matthew, Tadd and Todd? To pick 15 favorites from just those 3 artists alone would be a difficult challenge, as they are easily 3 of my favorite producers of dance music out there! So, I tried to limit my picks of them to each of their project names.

I had been asked to to the mix compilation that accompanied the Spectral Sound Vol 2 compilation that came out in 2008. So, there are MANY of my favorite Spectral cuts on there (you can find it on Spotify). I mention this only because there are a few repeats in this list, but I just couldn't help myself because I still play those tracks to this day.

Making their first appearance on EDR, Ninna V & Virulent team up and deliver two saucy Original pieces. 'Grey' brings the grit and the funk and 'Grind' is sure to make any dance floor shuffle and come alive. Ritzi Lee also makes his debut on Eternal Drive and puts forth a cheeky, rolling rocker of a remix. Jay Zoney rounds out the release with his remix - a straight ahead 4 on the floor banger.

After having a string of highly successful EP’s back in 2012 on Komisch, being followed by a triple release on Peter Van Hoesen’s Time To Express the mysterious figure of SP-X disappeared as swiftly as he emerged.

In only a few releases SP-X managed to capture the attention of many with his striped back yet hyper effective take on techno. The fact that so little is known about the man behind the music only added to the story.

Now, after a long silence, the Brussels based artist will release his first EP in two years on Cleric’s newly launched “PROJEKTS” imprint. Next to that he will also start touring around the globe for the first time. With more releases scheduled for 2018 SP-X is stepping out of his own shadows, leaving mystery behind and focusing solely on the power of his music.

The third release on the sister label, NEW YORK TRAX Imports, comes from the legendary Dutch producer and founder of one of the most interesting record labels out there, Vincent Koreman aka Drvg Cvltvre of New York Haunted. Since 2009, Drvg Cvltvre has been working on his own blend of dystopian acid, no wave, and experimental house. Respected in the international underground for his groundbreaking work in experimental techno as RA-X in the 90′s on labels like Bunker and KK Records, Drvg Cvltvre comes from a DIY punk background, opting for hard work rather than hollow pose. The 4-track EP for NEW YORK TRAX Imports is an accurate representation of his style: dark and melancholic, but also uncompromisingly intense.

Dense & Pika’s Teutonic beats have become a staple in many a discerning techno DJs set over the last few years, with releases on, Hotflush, Drumcode, Kneaded Pains and Hypercolour, the label that Alex Jones (one half of D&P alongside Chris Spero) co-founded with Jamie Russell back in 2006.
