FROCKUP Mix Series

The FROCKUP Mix series returns with Love Above Records cofounder, DJ, Producer and Multi-instrumentalist Ryan Berkeley. Ryan has had a huge impact on the scene; recently celebrating 4 years of Love Above Records (alongside DJ Ingrid and previously Dawn Again) as well as DJing across too many parties to count. With the release of his 2018 debut EP on Houses in motion, it reaffirmed his talent as a producer; contrasting the lush melodies of the A side with the heavy hitting acid bassline of 'You Dance, You Move'. 

The eclectic nature of Ryan’s production definitely resonates in this mix, using his adroit selections to incorporate lovely twists and turns suitable for any occasion. Subtle organic soundscapes and winding atmospherics slowly rise to uplifting house, eventually allowing for substantial basslines to take the foreground.

Ryan has kept himself very busy over the last few years, dishing out a full lockdown’s worth of listening – with mixes for Novel, Loop Dreams, For Home Use Only and Colour Club; as well as a new monthly residency on Skylab radio alongside DJ Ingrid. With a handful of unreleased material in the works, we were very lucky to have a chat with Ryan about a bunch of things music related; from upcoming events, favourite dancefloor memories and the new Sam Alfred EP which recently dropped on Love Above Records.

‘For home use only’ is an anti-club social, a chance to get to know someone/something. A series of transmissions purely dedicated to exploring the other side.

What’s good, good people? Doesn’t it feel nice to be slowly transitioning back towards a sense of normality? Yes, yes it does. Do I have the perfect accompaniment for this shoulder state of mind? Yes, yes I do. Number 63 comes courtesy of Oz legend Biancolato aka Nick Whiteside. 

Nick has been around the traps for a few moons, a tidy list of productions and a DJ’ing resume that would get him almost any job, the Biancolato moniker is a recent excursion into a bit more intimate territory and damn does he do it well. I cannot stress this enough, THIS MIX SLAP’S (hard), oozing maturity and understanding beyond comprehension, it transcends any situation and directly dumps you into a good (great) mood. So many perfectly tempered tunes, meticulously pieced together to build the ideal ‘home’, and that's exactly what it is, a place to be comfortable, a place to feel safe, a place to share with your loved ones. This is the perfect embodiment of the series, a real chance to show and tell a different side. I've blasted this thing countless times over the past months and I can guarantee its freshness, welcome to your new soundtrack. I actually think he put it best into words (see below)

It’s the endless twilight of an adolescent summer, long, lazy hours poking rocks with sticks on warm afternoons and waiting for something to happen, like finding a blue-tongued lizard during a dust storm, perhaps.

It’s your first kiss, soft, terrifying. The smell of another person’s breath.

It’s running until you can taste copper.

It’s lying in bed, your lover by your side as dappled sunlight filters through lace curtains, slowly moving across the wall.

It’s the smell of the forest in the rain. The smell of Mrs. Palmer’s surfboard wax. The smell of fresh cow shit. It’s the smell of old books and timber; slightly damp but comforting. It’s the motor oil in your grandfather’s shed.

It’s the condensation on the kitchen window on a winters night as potatoes boil on the stove.

It’s sitting alone on a moving train, watching.

It’s seeing something so painfully beautiful it hurts in your throat.

It’s knowing, and not knowing all at once.

It’s thinking in loops and regret. It’s an unwavering optimism.

It’s the comfort of familiarity; a sound, a scent, a snippet of melody that conjures a space in your mind, perhaps forgotten.

It’s a selection of music, of records. A soundtrack to a journey that may have already happened, or may be about to begin. Perhaps it involves distance, momentum. Perhaps inertia.

A journey can be soothing and fulfilling, rewarding, but also sometimes uncomfortable. Things happen, maybe unexpectedly. 

But by the end of the journey, by definition, you’ve arrived somewhere, even if that somewhere happens to be right back where you started from.

The ever charismatic and talented FB Perimeter ( @fb-perimeter) graces the Animix this week with a classy vinyl blend of house, minimal & grooves. 
Finn started off in the nation's capital, as one of the brains behind Canberra's favourite music spot, Sideway.

Relocating to Melbourne pre-covid, Finn helped massively on the Inner Varnika team this year.. He's now on to bigger and better things in Paris, no one can stop him!

@madalba was born in July 1985 in Bari, south of Italy. From a very young age, her musical interests moved across a broad spectrum, going from house and dance music to rock and punk leading her lastly to techno and club-culture.

At age 22 she approached the local scene as Djane with numerous performances in the club circuit of Bari. Through the years she has developed a continued and careful respect of the musical experience. She moved to Berlin in 2011 started djing with only vinyl records.

This helped her to build a strong reputation as an underground techno DJ, providing opportunity for her to play in clubs such as Tresor, About Blank, SchwuZ, SO36 and Mikz in Berlin where she lives today.

In September 2011, she spent one month in Detroit where she started the collaboration with DJ Seoul, Tom and Angie Linder of Detroit Techno Militia. This travel has definitely and radically changed her approach to the techno concept, which she considers more a political and social phenomenon and a lifestyle than just a musical genre.

Back to Berlin she immediately came into contact with the queer scene, then in full bloom, building a network primarily of interpersonal relationships based on mutual support and collaboration, a network that naturally strengthens over the years, leading her to basically all queer realities of the city and beyond. At the same time she cultivated her main profession as a trauma surgeon in a historically male-dominated environment which strengthens her awareness of her role as a woman in a still strongly male-dominated society.

Thanks to these solid experiences she became resident of the party Homopatik, at the time the flagship of the Berlin queer reality.

Her first releases on vinyl came out in 2014 on DTM-Label (Detroit) and Arkita Records (Berlin), the label that she spawned together with Synkopheit till 2016.

In 2017 she launched her own record label Future D\'e9j\'e0 Vu releasing 5 EP respectively by Transient X4, Ken Karter, Mannella a.k.a. DHARAXT, Phontonz & Shcuro, Rage Therapy.

In September 2017 she played her first house set for the summer closing of the Berlin party Buttons.

In Summer 2018 Madalba became resident dj at the historical club Tresor in Berlin. The same year she collaborated with the London based crew Aria with a party series in the UK capital.

Currently she is techno resident dj and co-organizer of the party Buttons in About teaming with Danilo Rosato, Anna Bolena, Jabob Meehan, Shingo Suwa, Akirahawks and Paolo Di Nola.

Over the years, his awareness of the communicative power of his role as a DJ not an end in itself but always aimed at creating a network based on the basic values of absolute respect for all forms of diversity, has been strengthened to the point carrier of all her artistic and interpersonal expressions.

Here, @madalba delivers a 5h hours stunning set recorded straight from the @tresorberlin booth.

Turbo Thot encapsulates all things up-beat, driving, and high-NRG. Swerving between an array of genres, her creative beginnings came in the form of her passion for hip-hop, and Southern trap. Her style has evolved into one that’s optimal for the club, influenced by Seth Troxler, The Martinez Brothers, and Loco Dice, traversing tech-house, disco, indie-dance, and tribal textures. As a long-standing resident at Section 8, Glamorama and Melbourne’s Music Room, Turbo Thot’s output is one that pulls listeners onto the dance-floor, daring them not to lose themself.

Also featuring plenty of old school Chicago gems, steamy vocals, and just the right amount of tech-house (think more early 2000's Nathan Coles/Wiggle, and less Top 100 Southside Beatport).

Kaytseng delivers a creative and well thought out mix for FROCKUP, consisting of tense electro, cutting-edge breaks and just the right amount of Rick Ross edits. Over the past few years, Kaytseng has featured on some very impressive line-ups, supporting the likes of Mama Snake, Shedbug and Hemlock Ladder across Lefag, HER 他, Pharos and LOADING_ERROR parties. FROCKUP 002 // Kaytseng

For the next instalment of the world's hottest new mix series, we are very excited to present FROCKUP 003, courtesy of Meg 4x4. You might've seen Meg gracing the decks at a range of beloved parties such as Primer, Daydreams or Revolver. With her keen ear and varied taste in music, Meg is able to traverse genre and BPM as readily as the trusty Land Rover Defender takes to the rugged terrain of the Victorian high country. In this house-driven mix, Meg treats us to a range of sounds that land firmly in the right end of the feel-good spectrum.  We were lucky enough to listen to it during last weekend's burst of beautiful weather, and it certainly made an ideal soundtrack to an afternoon of sun, charcuterie and exactly two glasses of Rose. Although sadly the weather today isn't playing ball, I advise you to turn the heating up, close your eyes and crank this mix.

FROCKUP 003 // Meg 4X4

As the days get longer and the budget gets shoddier, we continue to move towards a COVID normal summer. One hopefully filled with two things; just the right amount of “live, laugh, love” (Kmart, 1922) and a whole lot of appearances by Naarm/Melbourne via Bangkok artist Siri. With clause 2 in mind, we present FROCKUP 004. 

You may have seen Siri’s impressive visuals featured across respected Powertrip and Liquid Architecture parties over the last few years, becoming a sought after figure in Naarm/Melbourne’s left-field electronic scene. However, on top of this Siri is also a very talented DJ, releasing a line of compelling mixes during lockdown; including one for well-known label and party series, Anterograde. 

We are a little lost for words with this mix, where Siri’s meticulously constructed exploration into experimental guarantees for evocative listening, as he seamlessly negotiates BPM, genre and mood. Each selection is as intelligent as it is unique, blending eerie vocals with claustrophobic static, before reaching a crescendo of all out sonic hostility. However, let it be known, this is in the absolute best way possible.

FROCKUP 004 // Siri

When this humble mix series was first hashed out a few months back, DJ Luv You’s name was one of the very first discussed by FROCKUP’s shadowy overlords. So, it brings me great joy to present to you, FROCKUP 005 DJ Luv You! I first caught DJ Luv You (aka Ophelia) gracing the 1’s and 2’s one sunny, aperol spritz filled afternoon at Daydreams. Ophelia’s infectious love for soulful and groovy disco and boogie sounds immediately struck a major chord with me. Little did I know at the time that it would prove to be the last Daydreams of the season, and my last dance for quite some time. 

Taking a slight departure from the sounds that you may know and love from their online mixes and excellent Skylab program, Ophelia’s turned in a mix peppered with moments that invoke that long lost feeling of dancefloor bliss. Expect unrelenting grooves and memorable vocals, culminating in a mash-up that would put Girl Talk to shame. Dig in!
