FROCKUP RADIO 03/04/21 - Domestic Bliss #5 w/ Respite B2B Dwaal

After a brief hiatus, the FROCKUP mix series returns for another season, kicking things up with the incredibly talented DJ/Producer/Void founder, Mabel (she/her). Mabel delivers an hour of pitched down techno, winding in between eerie synths and warpy basslines. This 85bpm exploration into complex soundscapes provides for haunting listening, but in all the right ways. 

Over the past year Mabel has curated loads of impressive line-ups for her events series Void, creating a platform to represent the "talented ass women and local emerging artists to play to an accepting crowd".  If you've never been to a Void party before, we highly recommend checking the next one out tomorrow night at Colour. Providing all ingredients for a good night, from a welcoming, familiar crowd to well thought out bookings, Void has deservedly joined the ranks of Naarm's best up and coming events. 

Aside from these meticulously crafted parties, Mabel has featured alongside fellow local legends (and some of our fave artists) DJ Netburner, Loif and House Mum across Club Lonely, Daydreams and Inertia parties!! We're all very excited to see the amazing things that Mabel keeps on doing in the future, but until then please enjoy this mix she's kindly put together for us.

FROCKUP Radio: June - Handle Soundsystem

The FROCKUP mix series returns with the very talented DJ and Beat Mag mix series curator, Ham. Ham has been on our radar for a while now, ever since her outstanding Novelcast 73 and lossless.radio mixes came out earlier this year. But as fate would have it, I had the absolute pleasure of meeting her at Outta Range in April, a small festival run by some of the minds behind Dance Flaws. We chatted about all things music, the local scene and certain Nikki Webster B-sides and upon hearing her eclectic approach to the interstitial DJ duties, we knew we just had to get her involved in the FROCKUP mix series. 


Ham's range and diverse music taste definitely shines through in this mix, crossing atmospheric breaks, percussive house and even spooky Sigourney Weaver film samples. This mix has been aptly titled Space Forest Ranger, taking the listener on an interesting and well thought out interplanetary journey throughout the cosmos...so beware the complex bleeps and pulsating bloops. Ham was joined by MX Mami for a couple mixes, a Scottish DJ now based in Naarm, forming an hour and a half of truly special listening. 


In the midst of the Pandemic and against multiple lockdowns, Ham has still had an outstanding year. From playing across Darklove and organized noise parties, to mixes for Genre Spanner and arvo girls, to hosting a daily wake up call for Area 3000, it’s been hard to keep up with the constant goals Ham is kicking. Not only this, but Ham has been curating the Beat Mag mix series, delivering one of the most impressive and diverse series currently in Naarm. We can’t wait to see everything Ham keeps on doing, but until then have a listen to her mix below.

Grayson has had an exceptionally busy year; slinging out unreal mixes for Metroscape Music, Backpocket Slammers and Selfness while playing mind-bending sets across haptic park parties and Al Gharib events to name a few. We’re all very excited to see her continue this trajectory post lockdown.

After a few months of much needed rest and recovery, the FROCKUP mix series returns with the very talented DJ and Producer, B.C. Slumber (Benji). We first came across Benji after hearing his Slumber Assistant: Ambient Arpeggiation for Guided Dreams release on Southern Exposure Records - a calming and reflective LP which allows the listener to find comfort within tones, charms, and melodies to assist meditation in a dream state. This has certainly been played quite a lot over the FROCKUP airwaves and I can confidently say its one of my favourite releases to come out over the past few years. 

Apart from production, Benji has been keeping very busy lately, with multiple mixes being released for Skylab Radio, Area 3000's Club meditation series and China Based online Radio Baihui.Live. This brings us to the mix Benji has kindly put together for us. Like all of Benji's work, it is incredibly beautiful and soothing to the listener, taking them on a journey which continues to both inspire and nourish. Crafted from a box of healing tapes that Benji picked up in Queensland for $10, each track is warm and emotive - drawing upon the softer sounds of electronic music to create an hour long introspective exploration. 

We are very excited to hear the many more releases Benji has under his sleeve, but until then check out the mix and interview below.

Here it is! The very first entry into FROCKUP's highly anticipated new mix series, this time assembled by DJ Tekneek. You might know Nick as one the "unidentified flying sauceRs" behind Sauce Traxx.
 
Nick joins us in house-mode here, chock full of early 90's rhythmic grooves that'll have you scrambling for ID's like a techbro at a Bicep gig! Also featuring plenty of old school Chicago gems, steamy vocals, and just the right amount of tech-house (think more early 2000's Nathan Coles/Wiggle, and less Top 100 Southside Beatport).

FROCKUP 001 // NEEK

When this humble mix series was first hashed out a few months back, DJ Luv You’s name was one of the very first discussed by FROCKUP’s shadowy overlords. So, it brings me great joy to present to you, FROCKUP 005 DJ Luv You! I first caught DJ Luv You (aka Ophelia) gracing the 1’s and 2’s one sunny, aperol spritz filled afternoon at Daydreams. Ophelia’s infectious love for soulful and groovy disco and boogie sounds immediately struck a major chord with me. Little did I know at the time that it would prove to be the last Daydreams of the season, and my last dance for quite some time. 

Taking a slight departure from the sounds that you may know and love from their online mixes and excellent Skylab program, Ophelia’s turned in a mix peppered with moments that invoke that long lost feeling of dancefloor bliss. Expect unrelenting grooves and memorable vocals, culminating in a mash-up that would put Girl Talk to shame. Dig in!

Our first international addition to the FROCKUP mix series comes from Berlin based DJ, Victor Kubin. As a resident of the infamous queer party series, Riot, you may have heard of his regular 8 hour sets in the basement stage, delivering his unique take on classic Belgian sound. Some of the FROCKUP members were lucky enough to catch his set at Renate a few years back and have been dying to host him in some capacity ever since.
