Bio:
Brooklyn native John Massey has been attempting to damage eardrums for almost 14 years. A child of the 80s, John transplanted to Los Angeles as a teen. There he discovered an emerging underground dance scene and was infected with an interest in electronic music. John soon founded Sound Rehab Productions, connected with influential local promoters and artists such as Omar Ojeda (Darius Aleksander), Robin Porter, Drumcell, Ron-D-Core, Raiz (Acid Circus) and began coordinating techno events and working the dj circuit throughout the southern California area. Today John resides in Seattle.
In the years since John has stayed close to the underground, while making appearances at events such as Seattle’s Decibel Festival, SubSensory’s monthly STATIC in Portland, and frequent club and afterhour gigs around the Pacific Northwest. John is the kind of unassuming artists that earns respect rather than demands it; keeping his head down and focusing on his craft, trusting his instincts to keep the dancefloor moving. His current set consists of a live/dj hybrid that enables John to creatively blend a wide variety of techno, minimal and experimental sounds.
As a producer John tackles a variety of sounds ranging from his previous hip hop efforts under Dysposable Heroes, to his techno projects under his own name and previously as Indispenable Villains. He’s affiliated with Seattle’s From 0-1, a conceptual label which he represents in his various endeavors. He’s released on various labels such as HardSignal, Bleepsequence, From 0-1, Subsensory, Droid and his own Sound Rehab Recordings.  No matter the genre he has always enjoyed working with various artists giving him the opportunity to make new friends and take in new influences.:

"You better get your seatbelts on. This ride is going to get fast, and it won’t stop for nobody, believe me.

Wow, this one surprised me. It has been a long time since I heard a track that delivers such fast and strict tempo without limits or boundaries, although there are changes happening all over the track.
After the usual kind of mystical intro with all those little effects and typical elements happening you are introduced by the straight bass and beat foundation. I especially like those breaks where the complete flow of the track is interrupted by silence or added up effects. This doesn’t hurt the track a bit but keeps your ears interested in what’s next. The basic beat keeps you moving constantly is driven even more by those metallic textures and vocal one-shots added on the way to the build-ups. The variety of things happening within those eight minutes really drives you off of your chair. Definetly to mention is that metallic textured sound that fits perfectly into the whole idea of the track. The french DJ/producer even manages to easily switch between different rhythm patterns without going too far away from the main theme.

It’s like the man behind “Noize Method” has a set of tools which all do exactly what he wants without him putting any effort in it. I didn’t find any flaw in the overall mix and placement of effects, one-shots or synth lines. Okay, maybe there was a harshly mixed track of those vocal tracks there, but it’s nothing that draws any points from the overall result.
No wonder that there’s a waiting line to have him booked for the next event. Noize Method delivers solid, genre-true music that makes people move. Imagining him sending waves through a dancefloor full of people gives me goosebumps."

Welcome to Conversations, my monthly radio slot for Saturo Sounds radio. The idea behind the show is to ask one of my favourite DJ’s to do a guest mix, which I use as inspiration for my set.

For my fifth Conversation, I am delighted to have an exclusive mix from the very talented DJ and producer Erik Bruce.

A South Coast based Progressive/Techno dj and producer, Erik's love affair with electronic music started shortly after he was born. "Music was always being played in the house as I was growing up. Dr Hook, Pink Floyd, Jean Michel Jarre, Tomita, blues, jazz, classical but it was the long car journeys during the school holidays with Jarre playing that really cemented my love of electronic music." Taking in everything from deep house to techno, progressive trance to breaks, Erik's sets are a melting pot of lush soundscapes and haunting melodies sitting side by side with techno beats and energy infused basslines. Erik's productions are also gaining support from Cristian Varela, Paul Bleasdale, Anderson Noise, Scotty.A and more. Mossmoss (aka Mattie Bowen) is a Scottish born dj and producer with an intense interest in explorative music. With a keen ear and eye for detail, he is an artist by nature. His wandering sets paint landscapes of light and dark patterns, textures, and strange melody, heavily relying on atmosphere and tension. Mattie's inspiration draws from the organic details of existence, the tiny pieces most overlook in exchange for the big-picture rush of an ever changing modern world. His mind deeply set to explore these facets and to share his exploration in all forms to those that might look and listen. Mossmoss currently resides San Francisco and draws on The City and its colorful nightlife for constant immersive inspiration.

Mossmoss has had the pleasure of setting up some of the most popular underground dance music artists in the world, including Jeff Mills, Richie Hawtin, Marcell Dettmann, Function, Max Copper, Tale of Us, Cari Lekebusch, Todd Terje, Magda, Jooris Voorn, Voices from the Lake, Axel Boman, Kassem Mosse, and Speedy J, among many others. Currently mossmoss is a resident for the promotion group As You Like It in San Francisco, California.

US based artist, Milkplant (Justin William Pennell) is originally from Milwaukee,Wisconsin; but has lived in Oakland, California since 2010.  He relocated to the West Coast in 2004, lived in Seattle for six years, and started the internationally recognized Techno label and artist collective, From 0-1; with fellow artist, Sone.  Schooled in the Midwest and developed on the West Coast, his work encompasses over 30 years of combined DJ/production experience, and 9 years of record label operations.

In autumn 2014 he released 'Time Dilation', a four track 12" EP on From 0-1.  Charted by Gary Beck, Paul Mac, and Ben Sims at #2, #1, and #26 in their November 2014 Juno charts, this was a turning point for him.  Since then he has released on Planet Rhythm, Wall Music, Dark Net, Etichetta Nera, From 0-1, and Excise.  His productions have drawn critical acclaim from many notable artists; showing up in mixes and charts by Ben Sims, Cari Lekebusch, Jerome Sydenham, Bryan Zentz, Joachim Spieth, Tommy Four Seven, Submerge, Tadeo, Mattias Fridell, Mr. Jones, Electric Indigo, David Meiser, Samuli Kemppi, Arnaud Le Texier, Abstract Division, DJ T-1000, and many others.

As a DJ he can be found playing a combination of vinyl and CDJs.  He has played in various cities across the US, most notably in Detroit at the Blank Code - Droid Interface/Scene party for Movement 2016.  His mixes have been featured on Droid's D-Node podcast, the Warsaw Torture Boyz podcast, Blank Code podcast, Drone podcast, and Error Sessions. Komprezzor is not simply another gimmick or project trying to reach for the sky, fame or
mainstream, in the contrary he prefers to stay hidden in the darkest corner of that old abandoned
factory were you once wondered if you even had the guts to step in. The sounds and elements of
his live sets are dark and dirty as if they had been extracted from a piece of literature by Edgar
Alan Poe. Full of white noises and atmospheric riffs the percussive elements are extracted from
classic drum machines; such as the legendary 808, 909, and 303 that slowly morph in to a
hypnotic rhythm. Along with his live sets the Dj sets are also full of some of the dirtiest and darkest
heart pounding Techno, no top 40 will ever make an appearance on his track list, interacting with
up to 4 decks running at the same time and a few drum machines it will make you wonder if a
third arm was present at the time.


2016 has been a game changer for Komprezzor traveling with his modular set up the creativity
flows from beginning to end no presets or patters are preprogrammed before the machines are
turned on, in a way he is merely a medium or translator to the cry of the machines, multiple synth
voices and drum machines interlacing into a one of a kind sound creating and stitching each
element form scratch right on front of the audience eye’s, the result is a fully improvised Techno
mayhem.

Kamcken uses strong expression and a high bpm as a form of freedom in his music, it is embedded in elements that move in the foreground with melodies that melt like radiated shocks in contrast to a second plane of overwhelming cadences.

Sone is Seattle, Washington based DJ and producer Brian Sonnleitner. His first exploits into live music was being immersed in the underground punk scene in Wisconsin during the mid/late 90's. Fast forward to now, while keeping the same energy and ethos of his early experiences, Brian is a DJ of well over a decade with his sets trending towards the driving and tracky side of techno.

2008 brought Sone into the realm of production with his music exploring a stripped down but heavy sound. His original productions and remixes have received support from Ben Sims, Reggy van Oers, Joachim Spieth, Juho Kusti, TWR72, Soolee, and many others. Bio:

Brooklyn native John Massey has been attempting to damage eardrums for almost 14 years. A child of the 80s, John transplanted to Los Angeles as a teen. There he discovered an emerging underground dance scene and was infected with an interest in electronic music. John soon founded Sound Rehab Productions, connected with influential local promoters and artists such as Omar Ojeda (Darius Aleksander), Robin Porter, Drumcell, Ron-D-Core, Raiz (Acid Circus) and began coordinating techno events and working the dj circuit throughout the southern California area. Today John resides in Seattle.

In the years since John has stayed close to the underground, while making appearances at events such as Seattle’s Decibel Festival, SubSensory’s monthly STATIC in Portland, and frequent club and after-hour gigs around the Pacific Northwest. John is the kind of unassuming artists that earns respect rather than demands it; keeping his head down and focusing on his craft, trusting his instincts to keep the dance floor moving. His current set consists of a live/dj hybrid that enables John to creatively blend a wide variety of techno, minimal and experimental sounds.

As a producer John tackles a variety of sounds ranging from his previous hip hop efforts under Dysposable Heroes, to his techno projects under his own name and previously as Indispensable Villains. He’s affiliated with Seattle’s From 0-1, a conceptual label which he represents in his various endeavors. He’s released on various labels such as HardSignal, Bleepsequence, From 0-1, Subsensory, Droid and his own Sound Rehab Recordings.  No matter the genre he has always enjoyed working with various artists giving him the opportunity to make new friends and take in new influences.

5 Questions with John:

You relocated to Los Angeles as a teenager, what were some of your early musical influences there?

Moving to southern california as a teenager left a lot of room for impression, it also offered a lot of diversity that strayed from my already established east coast appeal for music. From the punk/hardcore scene where i was listening to groups like Suicidal Tendencies, Inside Out/RATM, The Vandals, Bad Religion, and The Decendents .To the "backpacker" hip hop scene where i was exposed to groups like The Pharcyde, Living Legends, Psycho Realm, The Beat Junkies, Project Blowed and Hieroglyphics. Then eventually discovering electronic/dance music where it was everything from early hardcore, breaks, techno, jungle and so on. Moving to an area with such a high concentration for sub culture left a lot to discover and appreciate.
 
A lot of folks may not know that you are also a fairly prolific hip-hop producer. How do you feel that works and balances out writing techno?

Yeah, lately my focus has been on techno but i still enjoy digging thru vinyl, cutting up loops/samples and recreating. But to answer the question I think it works on a couple levels, mainly with igniting inspiration and creating new ideas. The production process for both genres slightly vary so the studio techniques learned and applied ultimately compliment one another. In the end i just work on what i love and hope it translate's through the medium,  weather it be techno, punk, hip hop, polka or tap dance routine 
 
Your hybrid live/dj sets are quite exhilarating. What is your current 'live rig' and how are you performing with it?

Right now i'm performing in traktor running 4 internal decks driven by 2 x1's controllers. I also use an ipad to control other various parameters in traktor , it allows me to keep my hands off the laptop for the most part. But the idea is a lot of mashing up or remixing on the fly i guess, using all four decks to isolate different elements of songs/tracks and create something new on the spot. I usually stripe down tracks i've produced to play in this format and allow more of a "live" performance mindset while still being a in DJ format. I'm slowly incorporating maschine into my live/dj shows also, it's a lot of fun to play with , it offers a lot of spontaneity and the ability to further break down my tracks and recreate live.
 
Seattle winters: tolerable or cabin fever madness?

Haa!! Well that's kind of a loaded question being that we're in the middle of winter now. I don't think it's that bad, especially in comparison to some other parts of the country but it does take it's toll as the months press on. The weather definitely allows more time in the studio with all the overcast and rain so i guess that's the silver lining. But the cabin fever does start to set in after a while, i think that's the california kid in me, i could just do with more sunshine. I think the trick is to plan a trip/vacation somewhere warm and tropical during this time to offset the season, now i just need to book that vacation.
 
What does the future hold for you, what kind of projects do you have on the horizon?

Well i just had a remix come out on Subsensory Recordings for the Sergio Vilas "Slam Bam: EP, so check that out. I have a couple other remixes that will be coming out in the next month or so on Subspec Recordings and my own Sound Rehab imprint. I'm finishing up a bunch of original material that i'll be pitching to labels soon and also have a couple collaborations in the works. Beyond that i'm looking to perform as much as possible this year, keep busy in the studio and enjoy the fact that the mayans were wrong, 2013 is gonna be a good one!!
