Justin Schumacher

One of the most promising up-and-comers in the burgeoning NYC club scene today, Justin Schumacher’s history mirrors that of electronic music itself. Just as the Detroit progenitors of techno crafted their sound on the back of early hip-hop, Justin honed his studio chops writing downtempo beats under the moniker Logik Proof, dropping underground hits with prolific MCs like Reason Kills and I Am Many. Like many of the scene’s best producers, he was not content to simply dabble with one style and soon after took his studio output to the highly-competitive techno and house genres with a vengeance.
Having already established a reputation as a fierce techno soldier on the decks at various club nights in NYC including the prestigious Sullivan Room, Schumacher struck up a close friendship with Agent Orange of Gotham Grooves, resulting in his very first funk-tinged tech-house productions. Understanding the close relationship that all expert producers acknowledge between techno and house, he began a relationship with NYC house don Kenny Summit to launch the Good For You Records imprint, expanding his knowledge and horizons with the “Goddam Kids” collaboration with Summit. Goddam Kids was an opportunity to express a classic driving house sound to round out the tough edges of his current tech-focused staple of work for labels such as Mile End Records, Sonido Locales, B-Perfect, and Assimilation Recordings. Tracks by Goddam Kids have been receiving support from some of the most prestigious names in the house industry, including Brett Johnson, Frankie Knuckles, Todd Terry, and Scott Wozniak.
Meanwhile, Schumacher took to preaching the techno gospel on the decks up and down the East Coast, with a few stops in the mecca of techno Detroit to boot. One of the more frenetic gigs in North Carolina resulted in a connection with fellow NYC techno mavens Justin Kase and Owen Sands approaching the fast-rising techno talent for a release on their new imprint Ill Bomb Records. The result was the ominous, driving Gate EP, which included a remix by Droid veteran David Flores (aka Truncate) under his Audio Injection alias. This warehouse-style rework which employed much of Justin’s original sound design was hammered in every set during the 2012 summer festival season by German techno legend Chris Liebing, causing the record to go nuclear and smash the Beatport Techno Top 100. To date, it is still the top-selling Audio Injection track on that site.
Not content to rest on the massive success of this release, Schumacher followed with a flurry of remixes and productions on labels such as Frakture Audio, Kynatix, Teggno, and 069 Techno. The eerie warehouse stomper “Dumbwaiter” on the Teggno imprint became a staple in Audio Injection sets, appearing in several podcasts and was even dropped at the peak of his Tresor NYE set to floor-frenzied effect. This success in the studio was supplanted by high profile gigs opening for Alex Bau, Audio Injection, Black Asteroid, and one of Schumacher’s personal heroes A.Paul. The Portugese techno master later commissioned Justin for a remix of his track “Surrender” on his own well-established Naked Lunch Records label, which resulted in what is arguably the young producer’s finest work to date.
Justin Schumacher’s production work remains thought-provoking and intelligent, employing complex fills and mind-boggling programming with exceptional sonic construction while still remaining floor-focused and energetic. Channeling the complexity and vibrancy of the Big Apple itself into his music and DJ sets, he remains by far one of the most exciting names to those with impeccable taste in quality techno and house music. To summarize, we’ll use the words of another NYC legend; “If you don’t know, now you know.”

Just recently THNTS has discovered electronic music, before he was mostly interested in Hardcore, Black- and Doom-metal. 
A record collector and enthusiast he especially appreciated the created atmosphere. Soon he began to find the similarities in atmosphere and sound also in experimental kinds of techno.His DJ-sets resemble this development: sometimes driving, sometimes dreamy, but always telling a tale. 
After 1,5 years of involvement in the apathy crew he was a founding member of the new project ESCH which was born in the beginning of 2016.

Music has determined the kind of person I am," explains Madrid's Aiken. 
Born in the 80's, Aiken started to delve into electronic music after hearing a mixtape. Together with his friends, he began going to record shops every weekend, listening to music and amassing flyers from the different parties happening at that time even though he was still too young to actually attend them. 
To him, electronic music was not only a passion, but a lifestyle.

Now of age, he's given up the hobby of gathering flyers, instead choosing to focus solely on collecting records and producing music.
With his first appearance on Exium's label Suspiria Digital, he caught the attention of another Madrilene, Svreca, who offered Aiken his first vinyl release on his imprint Semantica Records in 2011.

This was followed by a steady stream of quality techno EPs on labels such as Lycaon and M_Rec, where he was remixed by none other than one of his all-time heroes: Regis.
Balance is a key concept for Aiken: something you can feel it in his DJ sets but also in his productions, in which he sees an opportunity to express what he experiences - from new cities to new encounters.
"When you are mixing records, you are the engine of the night," says Aiken. He'll use that engine to drive you right out of your mind.

Mossmoss (aka Mattie Bowen) is a Scottish born dj and producer with an intense interest in explorative music. With a keen ear and eye for detail, he is an artist by nature. His wandering sets paint landscapes of light and dark patterns, textures, and strange melody, heavily relying on atmosphere and tension. Mattie's inspiration draws from the organic details of existence, the tiny pieces most overlook in exchange for the big-picture rush of an ever changing modern world. US based artist, Milkplant (Justin William Pennell) is originally from Milwaukee,Wisconsin; but has lived in Oakland, California since 2010.  He relocated to the West Coast in 2004, lived in Seattle for six years, and started the internationally recognized Techno label and artist collective, From 0-1; with fellow artist, Sone.  Schooled in the Midwest and developed on the West Coast, his work encompasses over 30 years of combined DJ/production experience, and 9 years of record label operations.

In autumn 2014 he released 'Time Dilation', a four track 12" EP on From 0-1.  Charted by Gary Beck, Paul Mac, and Ben Sims at #2, #1, and #26 in their November 2014 Juno charts, this was a turning point for him.  Since then he has released on Planet Rhythm, Wall Music, Dark Net, Etichetta Nera, From 0-1, and Excise.  His productions have drawn critical acclaim from many notable artists; showing up in mixes and charts by Ben Sims, Cari Lekebusch, Jerome Sydenham, Bryan Zentz, Joachim Spieth, Tommy Four Seven, Submerge, Tadeo, Mattias Fridell, Mr. Jones, Electric Indigo, David Meiser, Samuli Kemppi, Arnaud Le Texier, Abstract Division, DJ T-1000, and many others.

As a DJ he can be found playing a combination of vinyl and CDJs. Komprezzor is not simply another gimmick or project trying to reach for the sky, fame or
mainstream, in the contrary he prefers to stay hidden in the darkest corner of that old abandoned
factory were you once wondered if you even had the guts to step in. The sounds and elements of
his live sets are dark and dirty as if they had been extracted from a piece of literature by Edgar
Alan Poe. Full of white noises and atmospheric riffs the percussive elements are extracted from
classic drum machines; such as the legendary 808, 909, and 303 that slowly morph in to a
hypnotic rhythm. Along with his live sets the Dj sets are also full of some of the dirtiest and darkest
heart pounding Techno, no top 40 will ever make an appearance on his track list, interacting with
up to 4 decks running at the same time and a few drum machines it will make you wonder if a
third arm was present at the time.


2016 has been a game changer for Komprezzor traveling with his modular set up the creativity
flows from beginning to end no presets or patters are preprogrammed before the machines are
turned on, in a way he is merely a medium or translator to the cry of the machines, multiple synth
voices and drum machines interlacing into a one of a kind sound creating and stitching each
element form scratch right on front of the audience eye’s, the result is a fully improvised Techno
mayhem.

New York based dub king Brendon Moeller was so kind to make this amazing hypnotic podcast for our beloved BALANS series. Brendon has been making waves in the EDM scene for almost 20 years now and is well known for his Beat Pharmacy and Echologist monnikers. And with his imprint Steadfast he delivers the highest quality dancefloor music around nowadays. A new album is due in april on Speedy J's Electric Deluxe label, but first he will drop an Echologist remix on Wolfskuil Ltd by the end of march!

As always we had a small Q&A with the South African master:

01.What is you relationship with Balans?

I have done a remix for Wolfskuil artist Roger Gerressen and for ESHU on their recently launched imprint with the same name.

02.What do you do to try and stay in balance? Any tips & secrets you would like to share with us night folks?

Eat well, exercise, sleep and only smoke good weed and stick with beer!

03.About the podcast, can you tell us the story behind the mix?

Once upon a Thursday afternoon, a middle-aged man decided to embark on a creative mission. That mission would be to lay down approximately 60 minutes of groovy psychedelic electronic music that would take the listeners on a journey that would enable them to transcend time and space.

04.What gear did you use to make the Balans podcast?

The mix is the first mix I completed incorporating a modified korg monotribe. It was done in my home studio using ableton and a UC-33e controller. Recorded in one take, no rehearsing.

05.Were do you have in store for us (gigs/releases) the coming months?

I have an album dropping on EDLX in April and will be touring Europe all of April and May. The first single from the album features mixes by Tommy Four Seven and Jonas Kopp.

Sone is Seattle, Washington based DJ and producer Brian Sonnleitner. His first exploits into live music was being immersed in the underground punk scene in Wisconsin during the mid/late 90's. Fast forward to now, while keeping the same energy and ethos of his early experiences, Brian is a DJ of well over a decade with his sets trending towards the driving and tracky side of techno.

2008 brought Sone into the realm of production with his music exploring a stripped down but heavy sound. His original productions and remixes have received support from Ben Sims, Reggy van Oers, Joachim Spieth, Juho Kusti, TWR72, Soolee, and many others.  His tracks appear on his home label, From 0-1, which he runs with long time friend Milkplant; while surfacing on other labels such as Android Muziq,  Webuildmachines, Rheostatus, and Darknet.

  Brooklyn native John Massey has been attempting to damage eardrums for almost 20 years.  A child of the 80s, John transplanted to Los Angeles as a teen.  There he discovered an emerging underground dance scene and was infected with an interest in electronic music.  John soon founded Sound Rehab Productions, connected with influential local promoters and artists such as Omar Ojeda (Darius Aleksander), Robin Porter, Drumcell, Ron-D-Core, Raiz (Acid Circus) and began coordinating techno events and working the DJ circuit throughout the southern California area.  Today John resides in Seattle.
  John is the kind of unassuming artists that earns respect rather than demands it, keeping his head down and focusing on his craft, trusting his instincts to keep the dance floor moving.  His current set consists of a live/dj hybrid that enables John to creatively blend a wide variety of techno, house, minimal and experimental sounds.  As a producer John tackles a variety of sounds ranging from his previous hip hop efforts under Dysposable Heroes, to his recent techno projects under his own name and previously as Indispensable Villains.  Heʼs affiliated with Seattleʼs From 0-1, a conceptual label which he represents in his various endeavors.  Heʼs released on various labels such as HardSignal, Subspec, From 0-1, Subsensory and his own Sound Rehab Recordings.  No matter the genre he has always enjoyed working with various artists giving him the opportunity to make new friends and take in new influences.  With several new projects on horizon 2018 looks to be a productive year for John so keep look out...

We have a very special guest for this episode. Man of the moment and one of the artists that sets the course for techno as we speak, Shifted, is on duty for episode 19. Noone knows exactly who is behind this mysterious monnniker, all we know he is no newcomer to the electronic arena. His debutalbum 'Crossed Paths' on Luke Slater's Mote Evolver label, is a stunning collection of tracks: rich in textures and with an almost physical ambiance. He made this podcast especially for his appearance at the first edition of BALANS at Melkweg on friday the 6th of july. Enjoy the darkness and make sure you don't miss him in Amsterdam!

01.What is you relationship with Balans?

No relationship to mention really, i'm just a fan of both the label, which is putting out consistently great music and of Darko as a producer.

02.What do you do to try and stay in balance? Any tips & secrets you would like to share with us night folks?

Try to eat well, not drink to much and enjoy life. Stress is the cause of so much ill health, I think if you have a healthy mind then your body follows.

03.About the podcast, can you tell us the story behind the mix?

I just wanted to do something more aimed at the Dancefloor. the intro and the outro also have some processed field recordings that i added on top to make it a little more interesting.

04.What gear did you use to make the Balans podcast?

Usually i'm playing vinyl, but i just recently moved to Berlin and as a result have no Technics here at the moment. I put this together in Ableton Live.

05.What do you have in store for us (gigs/releases) the coming months?

I have a collaboration with Edit Select that just came out on Semantica, I'm also working on a full EP for them. Aside from that theres remixes for Mike Parker, DJ Skirt & Planetary Assault Systems coming soon. And i'm working on a new Pacific Blue 12" and something for Avian.. No doubt there will be another EP for Mote Evolver this year as well.

1.What is your relationship with Balans?

I know Darko for a while now and just released my EP on Wolfskuil. I've played at his parties and he played at mine. Really like what he's doing as an artist and with his labels, so happy to have a release on his label. 

2.What do you do to try and stay in balance? Any tips & secrets you  
would like to share with us night folks?

I like to work out, I cycle a lot and go to the gym. Besides that I try to eat healthy. It helps me to stay focussed and feel good.

3.About the podcast, can you tell us the story behind the mix?

At the moment I'm reorganizing my record collection and I found some records I wanted to play again. So it turned out a deep techno mix with some of the older tracks and some new stuff.  

4.What gear did you use to make the Balans podcast?

I used 2 Technics SL-1210MK2 and an Allen & Heath Mixer.

5.What do you have in store for us (gigs/releases) the coming months?


The 30th of march I will be doing the next Imprint party at Trouw with Surgeon. Besides that I will be playing at nice parties in Holland and abroad. And at the moment I'm working on new tracks in my new studio.
