Bad Juju is a hip hop producer residing in Manchester, UK. Historically a deep jazz head, and having formally specialised in double bass and guitar for most of his life, Bad Juju found the music he was playing slowly drifting from the music he was listening to, and so entered the sampler.

Now a disciple of the prolific Knxwledge, Madlib, and Ras G school of jazz-informed beat-crafting, Bad Juju’s sound is like a thousand irresistible head-nods – submerged in analogue warmth and aesthetic precision, knocking funk breaks trip beneath discreetly sophisticated basslines while impeccable jazz samples float in the release between sidechain gasps.

She The Throne - Sometimes My Arms Bend Back

This is a sampler of ‘RADIO’, an album of instrumental beats by AlgernonCornelius due to be released on C-60 cassette tape via This City Is Ours Records for International Cassette Store Day on Saturday 14th October 2017.

The sleeve was designed by artist Tommings and features an old photograph and me and my little brother (he’s the one chewing the cable). The tracks on RADIO were produced between 2011 and 2015, half of them were made using Cubase and are the last AlgernonCornelius songs to be made using that software. The other half were made using Ableton through a generative sampling process, which involved putting my entire music library on shuffle and dragging in each track that played. From these random and disparate tracks I found elements in each of them that worked with the other and began to build up new tracks, tweaking them until they resembled a beat that banged.

RADIO is of the same lineage as my debut - ‘Happiness’, and is a regressive adventure into childhood imagination, albeit tainted by the realities of adulthood. Nostalgia comes at a price, and that’s often the cost of experience. Like VHS tapes, memories suffer generation loss, but can you imagine if you could dial in to catch the most thrilling parts and make your own story? Maybe these broken toys are worth keeping.
