112 kbps preview. This is a cover of the Walter Murphy classic by the super talented Haitian - Canadian pianist Henri-Pierre Noël, a long lost gem from 1979 unearthed by the Wah Wah 45's label and released for the first time last year. Luckily the multitrack tapes had survived so I had the honor to go first on these. First I did a track called 'Diskette' (preview here, it will be out in a couple of months : https://soundcloud.com/thereflex/henri-pierre-no-l-diskette-o) and then this superb version of 'A Fifth Of Beethoven' where Henri-Pierre excels in re-arranging the famous strings and clavinet licks into a masterful piano performance. My version uses all of the original sounds except for the kick drum that I've replaced (+ fx swooshes here and there). "Nu-disco newcomer Eau Claire is bringing Stevie Wonder's "Uptight" into the modern age. The original song was released almost 40 years ago, but the Washington, DC-based DJ/producer adds a thumping beat, infectious piano melodies and an array of synthesizers to the oldies jam to update it for today's dance floor.  

The track starts with an Oliver Nelson-esque backbeat before Stevie's lyrics about his romance with a high class woman come in. The piano jumps on top of the vocals, taking over the listener's ears and body. Synthesizer lines playfully bound around the lyrics before Stevie gets into his first chorus and second verse with a deep beat backing him up. Everything comes to a climax around the middle of the third minute, with Eau Claire daring her audience not to dance to the irresistible tune."

Born Maya Medvešek, Nightwave first started cropping up on our radar back at the end of the '00s, first with a series of dubs (and FACT comments!) under her past name 8Bitch, then a series of EPs on the Seed (Equinox, Astarte) and Slit Jockey (G41) labels.

After changing her name to Nightwave, she returned with a succession of releases on Fortified Audio, Unknown to the Unknown and more. Nightwave's always been open about her love of hard, fast dance music - Underground Resistance, Funk, Deeon, Mills and the rest of the gods - but it's over the latter half of her discography where she's really let that come to the forefront. Her recent releases, mostly self-released through her Heka Trax label, have been her best to date, regularly hitting the 140-150bpm zone and featuring collabs with DJ Deeon and TT the Artist. Listen to 'Rave Hard' or 'Fire Hoes' and tell us that's not someone firmly in the midst of a hot streak.

It's no surprise, then, that Nightwave's FACT mix - described as "the kind of stuff we play at my club night Nightrave and what my typical set sounds like I guess", is a ridiculous amount of fun, hurtling through old and new music at some rate of knots. Bangalter's mixed into MMM into Deeon. Rustie into Godfather into Jammin Gerald. Maribor into DJ Milktray into Finn. It features Mad Mike, UR and Plastikman's 'Spastik' within the first four tracks, but just at the moment where you think you might need to calm down, it throws you 'Pony'. Oh, and there's an absolute ton of Nightwave's own material too.

Strap in. And if you don't like snare rolls, look away now.

Petrichor makes a welcome return to Soma as he builds toward the release of his debut album Mångata with his first single of 2015, State Function. The Glasgow based artist has been working tirelessly in the studio this last while and with State Function & Amor Fati, he drops two epics cuts displaying dextrous studio ability. 

Title track State Function is straight up dance floor material with added Petrichor twist. A fairly boisterous track, Petrichor really breathes life into it as pulsing, sequenced synths become the body, culminating with a gentle drop back into stylistic sci-fi keys all the while retaining a solid background.

Petrichor's production and real musical ability come into their own on Amor Fati. Subtly oscillating pulses resonate across sub tones and he teases out each element of the track, adding to the tension. Through the ever evolving swell, Amor Fati quickly becomes real powerhouse as thrashing hi hats shake the foundations and live manipulation of the tripped out patterns give a vitality only this track can provide. 

A Petrichor album has been something we at SomaHQ have been yearning for and this single only whets our whistle that little bit more.

JOCKEY JAMS: The Toy Tonics label started this irregular series of VARIOUS ARTIST EPs. 
First issue includes a space electronica jam by MORITZ BUTSCHEK who is working at Toy Tonics office and is starting to put out own great tracks now. 
Then you get a high energetic funk house track by PIXEL82 vs JAD & THE LADYBOY. A heavy hypnotic vocal line from a young kid from Portugal reworked by Australian surfer and Toy Tonics resident Jad & The Ladyboy. The vocals will get your dancefloor hotter then the sun in Australian desert. 
Also on the EP you find a old school funk jam by New York kid DOUG GOMEZ. This one recalls the funky tracks by people like Ashley Beedle or even Masters At Work when they were doing their NuYorican Soul stuff back in the mid 90ies. It's full on New York. It's dirty. It's hypnotic as hell. And fits well with BLACK LOOPS bonus track that once again is based on a Rhodes Piano riff that creates that certain jazz vibe that Toy Tonics is know for these days.

As the Trail leads further into the depths of the woodland and Ravine, sunlight falls through layers of evergreen branches stamping intricate patterns on the forest floor. Continuing north, the Trail passes an array of plants and wildlife native to the historic forest. Vivid colours saturate the forest canopy, complimented by the sounds of the cascading waterfall echoing through the Ravine. In the distance a carpet of gently waving fern cover the rolling hills dotted with slow-growing centuries-old coniferous trees that reach towards the sun.
At the home stretch of the escarpment you will be offered stunning views of the Peninsula, with the calm blue water of the western end of Lake Ontario reaching out to the lush greens of the temperate rainforest. This is the journey of the Bruce Trail.

We’d like to welcome a very good friend of ours to the family, London-based Deep House maestro Pete Dafeet (@PeteDafeet). Pete and Giom go way back, having worked together on many releases on Pete’s own Lost My Dog (@Lost-My-Dog) imprint. Mr Dafeet is finally back on the scene with his first EP since last year’s critically acclaimed The Root, The Soul LP which went on to score a 4/5 review on DMC World Magazine as well being supported by some of the greatest players in the game such as Laurent Garnier, AtJazz, Steve Bug, Charles Webster and many more.

Introducing the Afterlife EP. The opening track, Polar Bear, perfectly showcases Pete’s own brand of techy future soul, layered with M1 hits and shuffle-y 909s all over. Next up, Jungle Fever, is a percussion-heavy banger that has been working wonders in @Giom’s sets lately, perfect for those intense mid-sets moments. Last but not least, Fear, nicely rounds off the EP with its moody atmosphere, catchy female vocal hits and bouncy drums. On the remix tip, we're very excited to bring you another Lost My Dog regular, the one and only Harry Wolfman (@harrywolfman). We have been really loving Harry's recent work on labels such as Dirt Crew (@dirt-crew)and House Of Disco (@thehouseofdisco) and are happy to get his signature sound on the label. Beautifully crafted intro, crunchy, raw production and a great arrangement makes his mix the perfect addition to this EP.

With a 1990’s Chicago influence, Weiss demonstrates his ability to inject his passion for real house music with his latest offering. In 2013, Weiss’ career was launched spectacularly, being championed by the likes of Groove Armada, Green Velvet, Loco Dice and many more. Weiss’ debut single ‘My Sister’ was rotated on BBC Radio 1 and strongly stayed in the Beatport top ten chart for over four months.

Hailing from Toronto, Canada, Demuir started off as a child playing around on his Dad’s Hammond B3 organ, before beginning to play music seriously at the age of 16, with skills covering the keys, bass guitar, drums and percussion instruments.  He first fell in love with house music after hearing Derrick May’s 'Strings Of Life' and seeing May, DJ Sneak, and Mark Farina at Industry nightclub. Demuir has had releases on IAHG (I’m A House Gangster), Classic Music Company, Guesthouse Music, King Street Sounds, Great Lakes Audio (GLA) and Henry Street Music, garnering support from heavyweights including Mark Farina, Derrick Carter, DJ Sneak, Cassy, Todd Terry, Kenny Dope, Darius Syrossian, Sasha and Kevin Saunderson, among others. Demuir’s musical output shows no signs of slowing down, there's some of his most high-profile releases still to come this year, including the launch of his new 'TruSkool' album on Magnetic Recordings.

On August 13th London/Leeds-based seven piece Submotion Orchestra present Blind Spot - the second single taken from their eagerly-anticipated second album Fragments.

Last year Submotion Orchestra released their debut LP Finest Hour. It lead to widespread media praise, an army of fervent fans, rapturous festival shows worldwide and sold-out headline gigs, including London’s Scala.

Blind Spot signals big things for Submotion Orchestra’s next chapter. Following the stylistic dancefloor shift of last single It’s Not Me It’s You, this new single swings the pendulum back to the lush and expansive sound that made the band’s name. It takes what was already a sweepingly cinematic blueprint and goes one step bigger and better, both musically and sonically.

The contrast between this track and It’s Not Me It’s You also highlights how the band have grown from their deubt: Fragments moves coherently between more styles than before, marking a broader palate of influences seeping into their output.

A curious blend of melancholy and subtly rising euphoria, Blind Spot fuses the band’s previous smoky and at times dense sound with a brighter, more pristine and summery optimism. It simultaneously maintains their signature mix of big bass, drums, piano/synth, strings, brass and Ruby’s sumptuous vocals - all finding their perfectly-audible place in the mix.

On 28 January London/Leeds-based seven piece Submotion Orchestra return with Thinking - the third single taken from their critically acclaimed second album Fragments.
Thinking kicks off with easy-going yet somehow frenetic high hat, all tight beats and ghost hits, imploring the foot to tap. This effortlessly cool and funky electronic track combines well-placed synths and live drums with Ruby Wood’s soulful vocals, cleverly chopped and produced, combined with close harmony backing vocals calling and echoing the refrain ‘I’ve been thinking ‘bout you’. Remixes come from Uggs & Barbour and Mark Knight.
Remix Number 1 comes from mystery men Uggs and Barbour who have delivered a slightly cheeky but fresh remix which somehow defies classification. Some say that the nom de mix hides a well known secret admirer of Submotion Orchestra but we couldn’t possibly comment, just check the mix and decide for yourself
Remix number two comes from Grammy nominated artist, Mark Knight, who is responsible for some of the biggest dance records of the last decade. His signature sound blurs the boundaries between mainstream and underground and has propelled his revered imprint, Toolroom Records, to world domination. As a producer, Mark has built a reputation for outstanding releases, consistently topping international dance charts with timeless anthems; You Got The Love (Mark Knight remix), Man With The Red Face, Downpipe, Conscindo, Good Times, Devil Walking, Alright... the list is endless. As a DJ, Mark holds international prominence, with his ‘Toolroom Knights’ residencies regularly hosted at Space-Ibiza, Ministry Of Sound-London, Cocoon-Frankfurt, Club Space-Miami, and at key festivals including SW4 London, Global Gathering UK and Dance Valley Netherlands.
Here’s a brief re-cap of the recent Submotion phenomena; Having captivated revellers with their frenetic live dubstep spectacle, the band became firm festival favourites, wowing crowds at Glastonbury, Bestival The Big Chill, Latitude, Secret Garden and Outlook in Croatia.
