From the echoes of the past, the ghost of one of the thousands of cotton mill girls finally escapes the tyranny of the machines.

A different take on a slice of history and tradition of the cotton mills of Northern England from when the rhythms of the dozens of steam driven weaving machines rang in the heads of the women who worked them and gave rise to the northern english style of clog dance. 

Sir Hubert Parry was right about the dark satanic mills but had little real understanding of the reality of life for working people. 

The song "Cotton Mill Girls" is actually an American folk song but we felt it captured the spirit of our ghost.  

This piece was first performed live at the York EMOM XIV 01/03/2023 entirely using SunVox both as a live synthesiser with real-time MIDI keyboard event and audio capture into a SunVox Sampler from a stereo pair of dual piezo contact mics attached to a clog board.   

Linda's (The Doctor) clog dancing is based mainly on steps in Pat Tracey's East Lancashire style.  

This upload is generated entirely from SunVox by slightly repatching the live setup so that the Sampler that recorded the live clog sounds is then replaying them through the same processing as during the live performance and the music is reproduced from the MIDI data captured from the keyboard at the same time.  

Audio I/O is via a Behringer UMC404HD.

A very old SunVox song

over the past day or so i felt like making some good ol' rhythm game japanese artcore, and this is what came out of it. i feel like my past music relied too much on timbre and dissonance; i wanted to make something more melodic and consonant. i also wanted to experiment with making my compositions feel more lively and not so "dry". lastly i wanted to stress-test a couple of piano and violin synth metamodules i made (they're what you're hearing here, no multisamples or libraries were used)

fun fact: this would probably be my second finished attempt at artcore. there was a first attempt years ago, when i first started making music; as you can imagine it sucked. in retrospect it was kind of alright, but it definitely had many flaws. but i think i did better this time :)

i'm not sure what to do with this release-wise, but i feel like this is too good to just sit on
