Cafe Del Mar - Mykill's set - G7 opening party

Next up in our Record Club Guest Mix series are Sanctuary, the moniker of Ben and Liam, a DJ duo from Australia who have been living in Berlin for the past 9 years. You may be familiar with their 'Life Classics' project. It started as an output for their own edits then later branched out into a mix series and club residency at OHM in Berlin.

Their mix landed in our inbox and from the get-go we knew it was destined for the Record Club series. Covering many spectrums of soul, it masterfully glides through tempos and unleashes a quiet storm inside you. Not ones to fear a vocal, it's stuffed full of soaring voices, sweet strings and the tightest grooves. An extended blend done right!

The guys pulled from of a couple of record bags and served it up on 1210’s at their Berlin base. As they described it "back to back burgers, boozas and records all the way". 

The mix is loaded with many of their favourites and a few dusty ones from the back of their shelves. Look out for cuts from Reggie S, Stage Coach, Edwynn Page and Herby Charles. It's packed with winners, some you knew, some you do now. A real steppers' delight.

– Thank you for contributing to our mix series. How did you prepare for this mix, and how would you describe the result? 

I put a bunch of records together and then decided which direction I was going to go in. I got a 2 hour mix ready of Balearic type wonky soul and then completely changed my mind and did this one. I was going to do a mix of all new finds but then I thought why not do a compilation of my 6 compilation releases. There is one track by Todd Rundgren that isn’t on a compilation of mine but I picked up a seven of this very recently and thought it worked in this mix. I guess that 45 could be the record that didn’t leave the turntable (see question below).

– Is there a record in the mix that you associate with a special story?

Well that would make it seem like I have a favourite track, but in truth, this mix is made up of favourites, old and new. I am so glad I managed to track down the elusive Tim Green and get his wonderful track, Got More Love, licensed for my next release on BBE - I did this with the help of Tim Green’s producer Andrew Macpherson. Meeting all the artists via calls or emails and hearing their stories makes me feel extremely privileged. Sharing the music via my compilations and documenting the artists is something I only dreamt about a few years ago. Leaving these musical footprints for people to find and then follow is such a pleasure. I think the sleeve notes on my releases are vitally important as some of the artists haven’t had any press for many years, if at all. My releases are all about them and they should be highlighted for their artistry. I think a compilation should have more information about the artists and very little about the compiler.

– How do you dig for music? 

I used to spend many hours in dusty cellars and record shops searching for records. I think I definitely went through my apprenticeship over 30+ years. Before the days of the internet I would carrying a notebook with vinyl wants everywhere I went. Spending hours if not days searching every nook and cranny where ever I was. Ruining holidays for the people I was with! Buying records from postal lists and listening to clips over the phone!!! But these days I’m pretty much a recluse and do 99% of my digging online. Still taking punts at things that just ‘feel’ right. It is getting harder as prices are rising, shipping and tax is horrendous nowadays.

– One record that doesn’t want to leave your turntable lately?

There are so many records to hear it is hard to leave one on the turntable for very long. I’ve been enjoying listening to the new Will & James Ragar 12” of unreleased material that I’m putting out with BBE and Will & James’ unreleased Acoustic Album that BBE is releasing later in the year. Also loving the output of Gil De Ray, a fountain of creativity. Musically I’m always looking forward to the next record to drop on my mat so I never musically keep still. I have eclectic tastes so like to keep mixing it up at home. Mind you it doesn’t go very long before a Bridget St John album get’s pulled from the shelves - my desert island disc would still be ‘David Crosby – If I Could Only Remember My Name’ - 
it is as close to perfection an album can get.

For the next instalment of our Record Club Mix series we’re honoured to be passing the baton to one of Brazil’s finest DJs, @milloskaiser.

Born and raised in Niterói, near Rio de Janeiro, Millos moved to São Paulo in his early twenties and has been DJing and collecting records for almost two decades. You may recognise his name as formerly one half of the DJ duo and party series, Selvagem, the man behind the Onda de Amor compilation on Soundway Records, or through his various several edits and remixes. Having played more than 1000 parties/festivals, both underground and big league, he knows a thing or two about how to make people move and for the last 5 years has also been running Caracol, a music bar/club in São Paulo. 

“For a change, I've decided to focus solely on new stuff: Brazilian productions and recent releases that sound heavily Brazil-influenced for my ears. I'm probably most known for digging out hidden and forgotten gems but this time decided to do a mix exclusively with music from the present that has been on heavy rotation on my sets. I love all these tracks and have been playing them A LOT for the last year or so. There's stuff from Phil Mison's Cantoma project, an Italian cover-not-cover of Sandra de Sá, João Selva, a Portuguese remix of indie Brazilian band O Terno, a recent collaboration I did with Gabto (one of my favorite producers in the world), one unreleased joint from myself together with Gaspar Muniz,  another remix one he did with Beno for Banana Gold Records y mucho más. The mix was recorded at Caracol, on a dry and hot afternoon (despite being winter here) with Pioneer CDJs and an Isone420 mixer.” 

Big thanks to Millos for the mix, he will be playing for the first time in Canada and Japan in October and is soon to be releasing his first original music on Planet Trip Records.
