Serial is a new podcast from the creators of This American Life, hosted by Sarah Koenig. Serial will follow one story - a true story - over the course of a whole season. We'll follow the plot and characters wherever they take us and we won’t know what happens at the end of the story until we get there, not long before you get there with us. Each week we'll bring you the latest chapter, so it's important to listen in order, starting with Episode 1.

I am Des Coulam and I live in Paris.
 
My work involves capturing and archiving the everyday sounds of Paris in, as far as I know, a more comprehensive way than it’s been done before. 
 
I describe myself as a flaneur, endlessly walking the streets of Paris, observing through active listening and, in the words of Robert Doisneau, one of the great twentieth-century Parisian street photographers, capturing “that gratuitous, never-ending show for which no ticket is needed.”  And it is from the late nineteenth and early twentieth-century Parisian street photographers that I take my inspiration to do the 

For most of our history we have used artefacts, architecture, pictures and words to create a vision of our past. It’s only in the last thirty seconds or so on our historical clock that we have been able to capture and record sound. Almost all our sonic heritage has passed by unrecorded. That is why I, and many others, are dedicated to recording and archiving the sounds around us so that future generations will have the sounds of our time to explore, to study and to enjoy.

My Point of View Soundscapes is an on line sound sketchbook exploring the everyday experience of listening.

The emphasis is on the relationship between the recordist and the acoustic surroundings. Everyday field recordings form the basis for the audio pieces. Recorded with binaural ear microphones, they are a mix of acoustic traces of presences within different soundscapes; the sounds of steps, breathing and heartbeat are interwoven in the wider acoustic environment.

The question asked is how sound affects the way we construct our personal memory of a place, but also how new narratives can be presented to a listener who has never experienced the location
