Number eighty....wow. No better time to finally bring in segment one of on a Ménage (@menagerecords) animix This time a continuous mix of their newest release, Backburners vol.2, released on their own label Ménage records. An incredible compilation of tunes that foray between deep house, tech & late night bassy bangers.

I feel a deep and real sense of pride towards Ménage and their continued evolution. They have clearly been integral to the growth of Animalia, but beyond that, watching them all continue to evolve as both friends and musicians has been so special and heartwarming... Let alone the fact they are probably Naarm's most down to earth, musically passionate, and talented people I know. 

They've recently been debuting their(impeccable)  live set locally, but watch out European summer for some very special live Ménage sets.

Back for the 28th edition of our mix series and it’s a special one!

The extremely talented amuwa treats us to a 2hr set recorded live at lovejoy’s re:charge last month! Prepare to be swept through an echoing maze of tantalising textures as heavy hitting, tripped out bass and minimal psy summit towards a DnB finale.
As well as being a stellar dj Joshua has displayed a wonderful selection of productions, his “Force Majeure” ep needs no introduction getting countless plays throughout 2022. Rolling subs and propulsive drums are engineered for impact, couched within mutating synth arrays for truly hypnotic dance floor experiences.
On top of all this Joshua is responsible for the consciously curated party unsung in Sydney.

The mix features voice samples of the 2021 documentary “Little Palestine, Diary of a Siege” by Abdallah Al-Khatib about biggest Palestinian refugee camp – Yarmouk, in Damascus, Syria.

About the anger of having to face so many atrocities and still finding beauty in everyday life. I selected some of my favorite tune for this mix as a soundtrack to feel but also staying resilient.

He runs @decadanceamsterdam together with Aritmia Sonora - an event, label, and mix series based in Amsterdam.
His passion for meticulously crafted sounds, mix intricately popular and underground music into storytelling landscapes from both international and Italian artists. Inspired by trip hop, dub, downtempo, and idm, he combines deep basslines and sharp glitches to cinematic sounds, while industrial and electrical feelings found their way throughout techno rhythms, creating vivid and otherworldly sonic experiences. Third Space has firmly cemented himself back into that head-snapping drum ‘n bass percussion he initially poked his head through. While his recent jaunt for Longform Editions reached into smeared and smudged time portals, stretching time into its most razor-thin edge, this release brings these two worlds together in harmony. Although, those abstract whirlpools have reappeared, through noise and blown out static-as-percussion akin to Emptyset, Ikeda etc. etc.

Throughout dot points, there is an acute awareness around how much solid ground to allow an audience. An instinctive ear for rhythm and texture pushes composition to its limits but keeps more recognisable elements an arm’s length away, keeping immersion consistent, constant – an idea that’s been in Third Space’s work from the start. The tracks are daringly short but remain fully fledged songs, rich with layer and consideration, percussion building as lyrical prose, unwinding stanza by stanza.

While definitely drifting back into the realm of dance music, this is not Third Space leaving drone and tonal shifts behind him. This is merely dipping his toes back into the water of the world he first started in, ready to contribute something new after coming up for air.

Progressive, melodic techno, a little atmospheric and trancey. Rolling 16th with some nice flourishes. Slightly complicated arrangement for listening. Mastering and compression was difficult on this one so its likely I will review another time if it has any traction.
