Patrick Russell is a true veteran of the underground, perhaps one of the last unsung heroes of a now lost era in the Midwest. He magically transforms the diaspora of pure jack energy into a fluent sonic dialog that never fails to devastate both minds and dance floor. 

A Detroit-bred DJ, artist and producer since the early 90's, Patrick has now made Brooklyn his home. His lengthy resume includes such highlights as an exclusive 2007 set with Jeff Mills in Detroit, performing at the 2001 & 2008 DEMF/Movement festivals in Detroit, more recent appearances at Boiler Room, Unsound, and BEMF in New York, to being a key figure in the now legendary No Way Back parties. In addition, he has been steadily building a strong catalog of high-profile remixes to compliment his increasingly varied and in-demand DJ sets.

His consummate taste and ecstatic yet disciplined execution have created a respect that cannot be purchased. Patrick is not just one to watch, he is one to be experienced.

Mexican guitarist and ambient artist Eblen Macari's Música Para Planetarios (Music for Planetariums) was originally composed for weekly performances in the Luis Enrique Erro Planetarium in Mexico City to accompany a voyage through the galaxy. The album, released in 1987 was based around Macari's solo performances using Ensoniq ESQ-1, a Korg Poly 800, two guitars and pre-hispanic Ocarinas. The expanded arrangements recorded for the album include a full stable of pre-hispanic percussion and beautiful baroque harpsichord played by Macari's wife. This expansive interplanetary soliloquy is undoubtedly Macari’s masterpiece. Remastered from the original master tapes.

Deep on a mind trip aboard the ISS Kingston, we are floating upon the low-gravity armchairs of its “Disco 3000” cocktail lounge. Brain-dance soundwaves are being distributed by means of the Akuphone, transmitting the psychedelic music of Spiritczualic Enhancement Center.

Me and My Students Have Reached Higher Levels presents itself as an obscure and ever-morphing spectral-jazz album. Produced by eight outernational musicians, once originating from Iran, Israel, America, Russia, Romania and Germany, this record carries a distinct centrifugal force. Suspending musical particles out of a brewish stew full of drones, bleeps and feedbacks, we hear a retro-futuristic sound which could have been Big Fun back in 1974. It makes us envision the electric dreams of an artificial intelligence modeled after Lee “Scratch” Perry. Given the task to create a dubby fusion requiem for Bela Lugosi’s Death, it seems Perry’s AI has been applied to a jukebox full of CAN’s and Sun Ra’s 7-inches.

For every musician who tastes significant success, there are countless others who fall through the cracks: artists whose dreams of carving a career out of their passion were dashed, despite the quality, inventiveness and imaginative nature of the music they made. Most never get to see the music they slaved over get released, or a new generation of listeners appreciate the demos they worked so hard on for an extended period of time.

Mila Anatoli is one such artist. Had it not been for Spacetalk’s Danny McLewin grabbing one of only 10 acetates pressed of her early 1980s demo recordings from a record dealer in New Jersey, her remarkable story and impressively off-kilter music would never have seen the light of day. 

Yet Anatoli deserves her moment in the spotlight and a chance to tell her tale. Despite the hand-written information on McLewin’s acetate being almost 40 years out of date, Spacetalk managed to find to find her – Mila had married and changed her name some years ago making the search significantly harder.

The small amount of information the acetate provided led the search to celebrated jazz producer and photographer Hank O’Neal who had hung out with Mila back in the early 80s New York. He regularly took her to events and used his contacts to offer introductions to a mixture of local heroes and global music stars. Through O’Neal, Anatoli met Arthur Russell, Astrid Gilberto, Michael Moriaty and photographers Bert Stern and Berenice Abbot. At one point, O’Neal even took Anatoli to a downtown studio to watch The Clash making a recording with Allen Ginsberg.

Amazingly Hank still had many photographs of Mila taken during their time as friends in NYC and the images used on this new release have all been taken from Hank’s archive.

Completing the reissue package alongside the original songs Danny McLewin in his Skyrager guise and Jonny Rock have added their editing skills to two of the tracks.
