Screaming divas, ethereal pads, and the smooth rush of TR-909 hi hats - '90s nostalgia is back in full force, and with it an entirely new wave of retro-futuristic house music. At the forefront is Los Angeles-based DJ/producer Taylor Freels, aka Urulu. The still fairly young talent specializes in a nostalgic sound that reminds of East-coast icons like Masters at Work and Kerri Chandler, while staying true to the computer-driven aesthetic of the present.

Rise Club, Boston USA May 2014 part one

Our special guest on this week’s Cadenza Music Source to Cycle podcast is Funk D’Void.

Hailing from Glasgow, and now based in Barcelona, Funk D’Void AKA Lars Sandberg, has been a prominent artist in the techno and deep house scenes for many years.  His first records as Funk D’Void came on the Soma label, the imprint owned by the Slam guys, and he has continued to work with them since the mid 1990s.  Under the moniker Francois Dubois, he’s released some delicious deep house music for labels like Urbantorque and Komplex De Deep, and in 2010 he launched his own label, Outpost Recordings.  Add to this various other monikers and collaborations (Chaser, Darkside, Hipp-E Funk), he is also a  busy DJ both in the clubs and on the festival circuit.
Funk D’Void has always made music with both energy and soul, and always DJs with an encyclopedic knowledge of electronic music, delivering the best cutting edge sounds in his sets, so please enjoy this week’s podcast.

It's a shame what happened to the enigmatic Francois Dubois, he was last spotted as a down-and-out in the Parisian backstreets of Montmartre, mumbling and cursing to himself...here is a rare recording of one his sets, a great swansong to one of the sorely missed "true" deep house pioneers of the noughties...

From the recently discovered lost hardrive vaults...and recorded during arguably one of the best years for underground deep house, I present to you a marathon 5 hours of aural pleasure from one of the most fun residencies (and a fantabulous night with fellow soldier Tom Shur-i-kan) I've had in recent memory.

    "Born in London, Progression's connectivity with electronic music began in the late 80's. The emergence of Acid House and Rave music within the UK created a prolific underground dance scene. It was this scene that captured Progression's attention! Artists such as The Prodigy, Altern8, Carl Cox, Ratpack and EllisDee were just some of the producers that fuelled his early record collection.

    As the underground music scene expanded, so did Progression's vinyl collection and his musical tastes diversed. Genres such as Hardcore, Jungle, Intelligent Drum n’ Bass and early House music began to fill his box. With an already extensive stockpile forming, his emergence into the DJ scene began with the purchase of turntables in late 94'. It wasn't long before Progression became the instigator of organising small illegal parties and events held in local bars/clubs in neighbouring towns of London.

    In 98' the big break in DJ'ing came with the start of University in central London. For over four years Progression ran his own club nights at the university's student union nightclub. By that time period his musical tastes had advanced to deeper Progressive House and Trance. The weekend parties soon became renowned luring in droves of clubbers. During his residency many legendary guest DJ's such as Tall Paul, Scott Bond, Jean-Jacques Smoothie, Tim Deluxe and Grooverider played alongside Progression.

    A move to Finland came in 2003 with his DJ career continuing in Helsinki, Turku, Tampere, Oulu, Vaasa and other major Finnish cities. Progression found himself playing alongside some of Finlands finest DJ's at nightspots: Laserpoint, Labyrinth, System Bar, Gloria, Kerma, Soda, Mother, Super Bar, Liberte, M-Bar, Uniq Nightlife, Bar Loop, Stockholm / Åbo Diskotek, Barbi, Superstereo and Klubi. These Scandinavian experiences brought another change in his turntableism: A careful balance of underground yet upfront tunes laced with a mix of timeless classics to ensure a twist of nostalgia!

    In late 2006, Progression rekindled his promotorship skills. Club event organisation 'Liquid Crystal Sounds' (LCS) was born. Established by Progression and Ali King, LCS is Finland's only British run electronic music organisation. LCS fills a niche experience and offers a different perspective of music and perceptions from back in UK. Progression is one of the resident DJ connoisseurs aiming to build upon his previous London promotorship experiences. With almost three years on the Finnish clubbing scene, Progression's LCS brand has risen from strength to strength setting a benchmark standard as a trademark nighterie.

    November 2008 saw Progression's activity on the Finnish music scene extend even further. Club 'Affinity' was born. Yet another unique concept merging the musical ambitions of three DJ's to offer something different from other events. Unifying clubbers from contrastive genres.

    Progression's roots have firmly settled within the House, Progressive and Techno genres. The emphasis of his live sets concentrate on driving basslines, deep breakdowns and techy atmospheric synths and strings. A DJ whose sets are never tiresome and enriched with emotion. In collaboration with some of Finland's finest DJ talents and the development of the 'Liquid Crystal Sounds' and 'Affinity' concepts, expect to hear much more from this Londoner as he clearly becomes a key figure in the Finnish electronic music scene."

The Barcelona based DJ and producer's influence across the tech house and techno scene over the last 20 years is indisputable. 

His melodic masterpiece "Diabla", released in 2001 became a huge global hit and DJ Mag's 'techno record of the year'. Played by house, progressive, techno even trance DJs, its release saw the Scot’s career soar to new heights! 

Other hits "Jack Me Off," "Bad Coffee”, "Emotional Content", remixes for Underworld, New Order, and Laurent Garnier, plus releases for Bedrock, Drumcode, and All Day I Dream, are just a mere snapshot of his discography. 

Seminal mix compilations for Balance Series, Soma's Sci-Fi Hi-Fi, and Cocoon followed, further cementing his place in dance music history. 

Still not content with conquering techno, Sandberg was mystery figure behind “Francois Dubois”, with releases such "Blood" and "I Try" named as a big influence for Darius Syrossian, plus many other leading tech house DJs of his generation.
