Avenue Red were grateful to ourselves for having made the impeccable choice to rock up in Margate on the extreme southeast edge of England to witness a phenomenal event back in April. Masterclass sets from all who played there, with this live set from Reedale Rise (real name Simon Keat) being one of the highlights to shine on this wonderful soundsystem in a visually stunning venue. It was ace to also unexpectedly bump into some key agents of organised UK underworld deepness, including Miles Atmospheric of Atmospheric Existence Recordings, Bovill of cult label Meanwhile and many others! "This set was recorded directly from my live performance at Faith In Strangers, Margate earlier this year for Ornate Music and 50arc. The venue is fantastic with a beautifully tuned sound system, views over the sea, and lovely hospitable staff. The event was a chance for me to catch up with people I'd not seen since before the pandemic and put some faces to online names, including Avenue Red's very own Alec.

My live set has changed a lot over the years and the current evolution is all unreleased house and techno tracks. The music I play live has moved in this direction simply because it's more relevant to the dancefloor and more fun to perform to a crowd than some of my deeper electro tracks. Gear-wise, I've added a Roland TR8S drum machine to Ableton, which has allowed me more opportunity to improvise and react spontaneously. Listening back, I'm happy with how the set sounds and hope it resonates with people. We drop in just at the start of Chris Stark's set around 2 hours into the night at September's TRACE at Brunswick Cellars Glasgow. 

Chris Stark is another one of our favourite Djs. His sets are equal parts unpredictable and measured. A confident selector with a broad range of electronic music in his armoury. No big ego here. Just pure dancefloor action that gets everyone smiling. 

Listening back to Chris' recent set, it has flavours of what you might hear played by the likes of Optimo, Horse Meat Disco or at an ALFOS night. We find it hard to compare Chris' sound to anyone in particular though, and that's what makes Chris' sets even more special. 

Curtis closes out with a few tracks from around 2:10, with our man Stark selecting the final track of the night. Can't wait for Mr Stark to return to TRACE.

Warp Records (or simply Warp) is a British independent record label founded in Sheffield in 1989 by record store employees Steve Beckett and Rob Mitchell and record producer Robert Gordon.

In the early 1990s, the label initially became associated with the UK's northern bleep techno scene, including acts such as LFO, Sweet Exorcist, Forgemasters and Nightmares on Wax. The 1992 label compilation Artificial Intelligence helped establish the electronic subgenre known as intelligent dance music (IDM). Subsequently, Warp became the home of influential acts such as Aphex Twin, Autechre, Squarepusher, and Boards of Canada.

British electronic label Warp was founded by Steve Beckett, Rob Mitchell  (RIP 2001), and Robert Gordon, Warp (originally to be named Warped, but shortened for communication ease, and later expanded by the backronym "We Are Reasonable People"), is one of the world's most respected, influential, and loved electronic/experimental dance labels of all times. After many years in Sheffield, UK, they later moved to and are based in London, UK.

Bleep.com, Warp's digital music sales site, was also pioneering in being amongst the first to provide high-quality variable bit rate MP3s for sale (later FLAC and other lossless formats). 

To commemorate the 35 years anniversary of the label, I made this mix of some of their lesser known classics, remixes and their influences. I am aware this ain't easy to listen, some of these tracks, like Pathfinder are quite experimental but it's Warp! 3 h 29 minutes mix and 45 tracks.

wav.world emerged out of a long-running chat exchange of mixes, tracks, and some playful speculation: If you were going to make a platform for DJ mixes in 2024, what would it look like?

Mixes are a unique type of musical expression. They capture a specific moment in time, determined by the knowledge and style of the artist. A mix is as important a creative statement as an album, remix or EP. One mix can change an artist’s career, one mix can open a listener’s mind to something completely new.

"I fell in love with the piano again." The DJ and composer discusses the vulnerability of the creative process, returning to acoustic instruments and touring her latest album.

Laurel Halo has been circling around the club music world for a number of years, but she's only recently entered the echelons of jazz and contemporary classical. Originally from Michigan, she went to music school in Ann Arbor before moving to Berlin, and now Los Angeles, where she composed her album, Atlas—a release that's been met with widespread critical acclaim. She also played alongside Moritz von Oswald in his jazz outfit the Moritz von Oswald Trio, and released a number of eclectic, UK-tinged dance floor records on underground giants like Hyperdub and Livity Sound.

In this RA Exchange, Laurel Halo discusses the new direction of her music and what it's been like to tour it live with cellist Leila Bordreuil. She also talks about her creative inspiration (namely, the Thai filmmaker Apichatpong Weerasethakul and books by surrealist writers like Ursula K. Le Guin and Italo Calvino), the practice of aesthetic minimalism more generally and the methods she uses to create subtle variations in pieces that are slow to evolve. Listen to the episode in full.

I am a music curator and a selector, a record collector and a mixologist since 1999. I started listening and buying electronic music in 1991 at 14 years old, first The Orb, early Warp records & R & S :) Afterwards, I became a DJ in chill-out rooms in the 1990's.  From then on, I hosted radio shows from 1999 to 2009. Resident DJ at Le Cosmos and Boudoir from 2002 until 2012. 

I still play live but no longer a resident in lounges/clubs.

Music I like : ambient, techno, downtempo,  deep house, Detroit Techno, IDM, funk, electro & dub-tech.  As well as Krautrock, jazz, dub, trip-hop and hip-hop.
